1.0Introduction

1.1ObjectiveThe Johns Hopkins University Visual BrandGuidelines were developed with one goal in mind:to create a shared visual brand identity thatreflects the excellence of this great university.A committee of marketing and communicationsprofessionals from across the university led thedevelopment of these guidelines. The resultingsystem presents Johns Hopkins as a world-class,integrated yet diverse university that builds onthe strengths of its many parts to make the wholeeven stronger.JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSIT Y VISUAL IDENTIT Y GUIDELINE SAnd a strongerJohns Hopkinsbenefits all of us.5

1.2Brand philosophyResearch. World. Excellence. Community. Those are the words we heard most oftenwhen we spoke with faculty, staff, students, alumni, trustees—people from all corners of theuniversity—to develop our logo system. That’swhy the Johns Hopkins identity looks the wayit does—with the book representing knowledgeand discovery, the globe symbolizing ourworldwide reach, and the crest of LordBaltimore indicating our connection to ourcommunity. It sounds simple because it is. It’swho we are: America’s first research university.JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSIT Y VISUAL IDENTIT Y GUIDELINE SResearchWorldExcellenceCommunityINTRODUCTION6

3.6Clear spaceClear space is the area surrounding the logo thatmust be kept free of competing text or graphicelements. Leaving space around the logo ensuresthat it will stand out appropriately and that otherwords or graphics will not appear to be part of,or “locked up” with, the logo. The preferred clearspace is equal to the height of the shield graphic. The minimum clear space is measured by the heightof the capital H in Hopkins. No additional text orgraphic element may encroach on this space. The logo files available for download at brand.jhu.eduinclude the preferred clear space. Maintain the clearspace when placing the logo near edges, other type,or another design element. The small format logo is shown here.
