3DS MAXAn Introduction to the 3DS MAX interface

This tutorial will introduce the interface and basics behind Autodesk 3dsMax

3ds Max opening.Now what?The 3ds Max logo in the upper left corner actslike the main file button of most programs.If anything was previously developed in 3ds max,then the file can be opened here.Most often, other formats will be imported toMax. If this is the case, then hitting importwill open an import window where one canchoose any format to import into Max.

Setting up the new modelCoherence between models that may be imported is key. Inorder to keep the same scales, the units must be the same. Thecustomize menu in Max will allow one to select the units setupmenu. In the Units Setup, one can choose to set the units towhichever the model requests.

Select Object byclicking on screenSelect Object nameSelect andscale itemSnaps ToggleSelect and move itemThe main toolbar iswhere the mainfunctions are located.Select and rotate itemRight clicking on the snap button willbring up the snap menu. Here you canselect the type of points that the cursorwill snap to in the interface. The four viewports show fourdifferent views of the modelspace.Working between multiple viewports at one canallow much more efficiency and flexibility indesign. The ability to see how the model looksin various views at one time is important to thefinal outcome.

Modify Motion UtilityCreate Hierarchy DisplayThis panel allows oneto edit or drawanything from a simpleform to complexshapes and figures.The create tab will allow one toeasily choose a form or type ofshape from the menu and build it.Various other objects can bechosen from the menu, such asshapes, cameras, and lights fromthe same menu.The modifier tab iswhere complexitycomes into play for3ds Max. Selectingvarious modifiers willchange and adddifferent features tothe models.

MaterialBrowserRender Render StartSetup Window RenderThe render setup windowholds every adjustmentand option available forthe rendering.This area can select whatview will be renderedThis area is where adjustments as to which viewportwill be rendered and the sizeof the renderered imageWhen the render is started, therender window will open and this iswhere the render will be viewed.From this menu you can save, clear, orcopy the current rendered image.Max has various preset renderingconditions, such as mental raydaylighting that require fewchanges with great results.

Previews of the outputof the material whenrenderedGet material willcreate a new materialfrom scratch to beready for editing.When a material is asdesired, this buttonwill apply the materialto any selected object.3ds Max has manypre-made materialsthat can be used as isor easily customized.MaterialEditorThe material editor tab is one of the mostimportant parts of rendering. In order tomake a model look like something other thana grey box, a material must be created. Mostnew versions of 3ds Max have the “SlateMaterial Editor,” but the “Compact MaterialEditor” can be selected by the mode button.When the getmaterial button isselected, thiswindow will openup as thematerialsavailable to beselected. Thematerials that areunder the mentalray tab areadvised to beselected becausethey are higherquality whenrendered. Arch &Design acts as abase material thatcan becustomized.
