Finding a homeMaeve Zimmer didn’t really leavehome when she came to ChamplainCollege—she found a new one.In high school, she fell in love withthe College through a virtual tour. Thecourtship continued after a real tour ayear later. After taking classes at a stateuniversity and a community college,Maeve enrolled at Champlain. That’swhen she found her place.“It’s a small campus, so it’s easy tonavigate. It feels like a family, verysecure. You feel like you belong—nojudgment is in the air,” Maeve says. The family feeling extends toChamplain’s faculty.“The professors see the best in eachstudent. They nudge them to realizethat in themselves, inspiring themto be their best self,” Maeve says.“The faculty’s doors are always open.Sometimes you can just stop andchat about something that’s troublingyou or that you need advice on,academically or personally.”More engagement with professorsmeans more engagement withacademics in general. “TheCommunications department hasmany opportunities for me to choosefrom,” says Maeve, of Fairfield, Conn.“There seems to be something foreverybody in each division.”Champlain’s Summer Bridge Programand orientation for transfer studentshelp them make the transition.“The Bridge Program is a terrificopportunity for us all to mingle andmerge into our new environmenttogether. And it’s a great time to getthe Core credits out of the way,”Maeve says.During orientation, along withsnowshoeing, campus tours andgames, Maeve mingled and merged.“Champlain eases you into the transferprocess without making you feel likean outsider. I haven’t been here long, and it feels like I started my collegecareer here years ago,” she says.Champlain’s dorm life providesopportunities to make strongconnections, too. “You feel a part ofsomething bigger than yourself becauseit’s not just about your academiccareer. It’s about sharing thingswith others,” Maeve says.Maeve ZimmerUndeclared, Division of Communication & Creative MediaClass of ’141011

Using the tools he needsIt was a good sign to Megh Shah thatChamplain Digital Forensics professorJonathan Rajewski fielded multiplephone calls from him with questionsabout the program—before Megh evenapplied. And that a transfer admissionsstaff member helped him find a job oncampus—before he started. That made Megh’s choice seem allthe more solid when he transferred toChamplain from a community collegein his hometown of Philadelphia. He was already convinced aboutChamplain on one front. “It has thenation’s best Computer & DigitalForensics program with the bestprofessionals in the field teaching us,”he says. “The small classroom size allowsa better faculty-student interaction. And it’s great to study withprofessionals who use thetools and software inreal life.”Megh uses the most up-to-datesoftware—Encase and FTK—in hisclasses. “I like the hands-on aspect, thereal work experience you get in yourclassroom. That helps students master theskills before being in the field,” he says.In addition to attentive faculty and staff, the Summer Bridge Program helpedwith Megh’s transfer to Champlain.“It was the best way to transition intoChamplain. It gives a taste of what it’slike,” he says. For Megh, it’s the right location, too.“Burlington is a great place to live ifyou like living in a city and also like thesilence sometimes. The best part is it’sfilled with college students,” he says.“Burlington feels like home.”His future is tied to Burlington, wherehe wants to work after graduation.“The Champlain name is so good thatthe job prospects are great. I thinkChamplain is the best decision I evermade,” Megh says.Megh ShahComputer & Digital ForensicsClass of ’131213

And taking Business110 has helped by showing me thedifferent parts of a business and howthey work together.”From the start, some of the reasonsshe chose Champlain—personalattention from faculty and smallclasses—were reinforced. “It’s a loteasier with smaller classes to getthe help you need from teachers,”Veronica says. “They’re willing toanswer my questions outside of classand will help if I need help on ahomework assignment.”Veronica looks forward to theSummer Bridge Program for transferstudents. “The fact that you can takesix credits in the summer is a hugehelp.
