Scania OpticruiseScania Opticruise, one of the first automated gearchanging systems on the market, has been refinedin many steps over the years, and is now one of thesmoothest and smartest systems on the market.For operations requiring the driver to be in chargefor specific manoeuvring, we introduce Clutch onDemand: a new performance step for Scania Opticruise.Clutch on Demand has an additional clutch pedal forconvenient use in special conditions, otherwise thesystem works as an ordinary automatic clutch system.Smooth and fast gearingThe new lay-shaft brake provides faster and smoothergear changes to maintain both engine torque and roadspeed.Scania Opticruise general features Driver interface with all functions for gear changingand retarder control integrated in the right-handsteering wheel lever. Comprehensive electronic protection keeps clutchwear to a minimum. Enables better traction control whendriving in rough terrain and on surfaces with highrolling resistance.Scania RetarderThe Scania Retarder interacts with the cruise control,exhaust brake and wheel brakes to provide totaldownhill speed control. In addition, the retarder isavailable in 2 performance steps for different drivingconditions. The more powerful R4100 is also availablein a version with a clutch that disengages the retarderfrom the gearbox when it is not in use. This minimisesthe retarder’s drag losses and saves fuel.
AxlesTo meet any demands, Scania has a wide range ofsteered and fixed axles, of which driven axles areavailable with and without hub reduction in a widerange of axle gear ratios.Front axlesFor on-road applications the front axle can carrya load of up to 10 tonnes for a single axle, and for in-siteoperations as much as 12 tonnes. With double frontaxles, the load capacity is up to 2x10 tonnes for on-roadoperation and 2x12 tonnes for in-site operation.The transfer gearbox used for driven front axles has2 gears and is available in 2 executions; with or withoutdisconnectable front axle drive. Drive on the first axlegives excellent mobility and traction in soft surfaceconditions (e.g. mud, sand, and snow).Rear axlesScania has a wide range of rear drive axles with andwithout hub reduction. Bogie axles with hub reductioncan carry up to 32 tonnes for on-road applications andup to 42 tonnes in site operation.Tag axlesNon-steered tag axles have a capacity of 10 tonneswhereas steered tag axles can carry up to 9 tonnes.The electro-hydraulic rear-steered axle helps toincrease load capacity and reduce fuel consumption.AWDStandard configurations for all-wheel drive are 4x4 or6x6, but other complex driven axle combinations arealso available.Scania Driver SupportScania Driver Support is a system that continuouslygives the driver individual hints and feedback on thedriving with safety and fuel economy as key parameters.It works in real time during driving and delivers asummary after a completed assignment.
