M. SHAUBSmall groupsof Pine Siskins,Spinusp. pinus (Wilson) were observedon the lawn and occasionallyaboutthe feedingtrays aroundthe middleof February. Later they visitedthe traps usedfor takingEveningGrosbeaks,the bandingof whichwasconductedin cooper ationwith Mr. Edwin Mason, Superintendentof the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, which is locateda coupleof miles to the south. Our stationwasat that time operatedas a sub-stationof the Sanctuaryand whenthe Siskinsbeganto enter the Grosbeaktraps during the last weekof February, arrangementswere made with Mr. Mason to band someof thesebirds to seeif they were winter residentsor if they wouldmoveon to anotherlocality as the winter progressed.Tra,ppingbeganon the 26th of Februaryand within a weekit wasquiteevidentthat therewere more Siskinsin the vicinity than we hadestimatedand the repeatsappearedto indicatethat a populationstudyof the birdsas winterresidentsor as a migratingflockmightreadilydevelop. In order to take advantageof an excellentopportunitytoobtain detailedand accuratedata on the behaviorand population.of our little visitorswe gaveconsiderableand careful attentionto thedetailsof the studywhichran parallelwith ,thework of bandingtheEveningGrosbeaks.
