Don Callaway. If you have family orfriends who left the Church, this may help you bring them back, by understanding what many of our youth think and feel. Here is the story of a young man who became a drunk, partier, and drug addict. But even he could find his way to Christ,by accidentally reading a book about Jesus. So perhaps leaving books and pamphlets around will be used by God to help

someone you know. The label says “How is a diehard agnostic transformed into a fervent apostle of Christ? Fr. DonaldCalloway, a former teenage rebel, will have you on the edge of your seat as he candidly shares the amazing story of how hewas unexpectedly led into the Catholic Faith and to the priesthood by God’s grace and the intercession of the BlessedVirgin Mary.”Ministries and OutreachesStar of BethlehemAs we celebrate the Thanksgiving holidayon Thursday, we know that Christmas is notfar behind.During the Christmas season it has been alongstanding tradition here at St. Virgil’s to donate giftcards to those in need.Beginning next weekend, two trees will be decorated withenvelopes requesting a gift card from a local store.Anyone wishing to contribute to this outreach programcan select an envelope from one of the trees on either sideof the altar and purchase the gift card requested. Not only do wecelebrate the Second Sunday of Advent this week, but wehave two feasts of the Blessed Mother on the 9th and 12th.On the Second Sunday of Advent we focus on John theBaptist, the one who prepared the way for Christ, baptizing in the River Jordan where the first band ofIsraelites entered the promised land. John tells hisbaptized followers that they are being baptized with theHoly Spirit, showing us that from the very beginning theHoly Spirit was a significant and powerful presence in ourfaith. We then celebrate the Feast of the ImmaculateConception of the Blessed Mother, which stands as thecelebration of the Blessed Mother as the Patron of theUnited States. How much America needs this protector inthese tough times! This feast recognizes that the BlessedMother was born without sin, preparing her to be themother of the Savior of the world (not observed this yearas a Holy Day)The third feast of this Second Week of Advent is thecelebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This apparition ofthe Blessed Mother is seen as a young woman who ispregnant, with every aspect of it portraying the peace andblessings that she brings to those who pray to her. Shestands as a young woman awaiting the birth of her child,a depiction of our Mother Mary two thousand years ago.Lord, help each of us to welcome Christ into our lives thisAdvent, as enthusiastically as did St. John the Baptist andthe Blessed Mother!Evangelization CornerIn an earlier column (November 17) wementioned that, in their table prayers Jewishfamilies prayed over the cup that God wouldsend the Messiah to Israel to restore theKingdom of David. The early Christians included a similarprayer in their Eucharistic Prayer. Today, in the EucharisticPrayer at Mass the celebrant continues with a similar prayer,The Epiclesis, which is prayed in two parts: the 'ConsecratorEpiclesis’ and the 'Communion Epiclesis’.The celebrant begins the 'Consecratory Epiclesis’ by givingpraise and thanks to the Father and asking Him to send theHoly Spirit to change our gifts of bread and wine into theBody and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. InEucharistic Prayer II he prays: "Make holy, therefore, thesegifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them likethe dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body andBlood of our Lord, Jesus Christ".In the 'Communion Epiclesis’, which is similar to the part ofthe Jewish prayer in which they asked God to restore theKingdom of David expecting that the Messiah would uniteGod’s people in a restored Davidic Kingdom, we confidentlyhope that through the Eucharist we will be united together inhis Church. The celebrant calls on the Holy Spirit prayingthat all those who receive the Eucharist may draw into agreater communion, becoming one body and one spirit inChrist. Before we leave this discussion of the Epiclesis, it isinteresting to note that it is at this point in the Mass thatthere has been a great controversy between the Eastern andWestern Churches. At issue is, when does the presence ofChrist in the Eucharist become a reality? Or, when is themoment of “transubstantiation” or the moment ofconsecration?Eastern Catholics have traditionally placed a great emphasison the Epiclesis as the moment in which the Holy Spirit iscalled down upon the gifts to transform them into the Bodyand Blood of Christ. They choose to believe that Christmanifests himself in the Eucharist at some unspecified timeduring the Eucharistic prayer. In the Eastern Rite theEpiclesis comes after the Words of Institution Narrative. In the Western Church (Roman Rite) however, the momentof consecration is considered to begin when the celebrantrecalls the events of the Last Supper “Take this all of you andeat of it .”, (the words of the Institution Narrative).May the Lord’s peace be with you always!Evangelization Ministry
