I have spoken to many who believethat they have, indeed, received positive affirmations, guidance, signs, symbols, etc. There could be certain instances where the Lord permits a soul in heaven to send us a word, message, sign, or consolation. However, this does not seem to be something we should regularlyexpect, and we should be very discerning before simply accepting that something is a message froma departed soul. Most certainly to be avoided is any conjuring of the dead through mediums, seances or other methods (cf. Dt 18:10; Lv 19:31; 20:27). Such actions are prohibited by the FirstCommandment since they violate our trust in God and seek to know the future or obtain otherknowledge. This is done apart from simply trusting that God has revealed to us that we must know tobe saved. In another biblical account, we also see a general dismissal of the dead taking to the living. In theparable of the Lazarus and the rich man, the rich man asks that Lazarus be sent to warn his brothersso that they don't end up in torment. But Abraham replied, "They have Moses and the prophets; letthem listen to them" (Lk 16:29). In other words, God's general expectation is for us to rely on what hehas revealed through Scripture and the teachings of the Church. This precludes any regular need forus to get messages from the souls in heaven. Surely, they pray for us there and they, too, trust thatGod will send necessary graces, nudges, and reminders. Hence, while it is possible God sometimesallows the souls in heaven to send messages, this would seem to be rare, and our best bet is to stickto the solid meat and potatoes of God's word in Scripture and Church teaching. PRAYER FOR THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED: NOVEMBER 2November is an important time of year for commemoration. On the second of the month, wecelebrate All Souls Day, on which we remember all the deceased. November 11 th is Veterans Day,in honor of those who gave their lives for our country. In fact, the whole month of November isdedicated to remembering the dead. What does it mean to remember the deceased? We recall first of all that we are the Body of Christ and that our family also includes those who havegone before us. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the Communion of Saints,“a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenlyhome, those expiating their sins in Purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Betweenthem there is an abundant exchange of all good things”.Blessed are those who have died in the Lord;let them rest from their labors for their good deeds go with them.Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.May their souls and the souls of all the faithfuldeparted, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.Amen1) Did you know.a) Living with Christ (missalette) offers a free app- pp, so that you can follow the Mass readings on your device anytime, anywhere?b) Augustine Institute has just launched a free prayer app- “Amen” /15732984132) Most of what you’ve heard about Galileo is probably wrong. Amen.SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS: NOVEMBER 1The Feasts of All Saints and All Souls both evolved in the life of the Church independently of paganism and Halloween. However, elements of pagan practices were perhaps ‘baptized’ by some cultures or attached themselves to thecelebration of All Saints and All Souls. The exact origins of the Feast of All Saints are uncertain, although, after thelegalization of Christianity in 313, a common commemoration of Saints, especially the martyrs, appeared in variousareas throughout the Church. The primary reason for establishing a common feast day was because of the desire tohonor the great number of martyrs, especially during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian (284-305), the worst andmost extensive of the persecutions. Quite simply, there were not enough days of the year for a feast day for eachmartyr and many of them died in groups. A common feast day for all saints, therefore seemed most appropriate. Fr.
