2020 In Hindsight.It is a year we likely won’t forget and each of uscarry with us memories, lessons, regrets, andgrowth. As we reflect on the giving from ourcongregants over the year, there are two Hebrewlessons that stand out.Who is rich? One who finds happiness in whatshe has. (Pirkei Avot 4:1)At the same time, we have learned again that,for those of us who are lucky enough to haveour basic needs met, money alone cannot createmeaning. This year reminded us: what we alreadyhave is incredible. When we recognize the good inour lives, we experience riches indeed.Our fate is bound up in each other (BTShevuot 39a)In 2020, we learned the extent to which the fateof every single one of us is in each other’s hands.We are woven together inextricably. We need eachother. We depend on each other. We must be herefor each other.As we have said throughout the year, chazak,chazak v’neitchazek, be strong, be strong, andtogether we are strengthened. RABBI’S LETTERTzedakah Is Our Prophetic Power-toolDear Friends,I grew up thinking the wordtzedakah meant “charity,” an act ofgoing above and beyond, to helpothers. Something here, however,was lost in translation— and it sohappens to be the most excitingpart of our tradition. “How doyou know a fish is alive?” asks anold Yiddish Proverb. “You knowit’s alive if it swims upstream!”Judaism is more than a culture; it isa counter-culture, a way of living,which swims upstream againstthe “world-as-it-is,” parched withbrokenness and in desperate needof healing.Tikkun olam, our age-old obligationto repair (within and beyondourselves), is part and parcel ofthe value proposition of Judaism.Our tradition exists for a holypurpose, our mission, borne out ofthe memory of our own people’sjourney from enslavement in Egyptto liberation and freedom. Yet,this journey does not end there. Aswe remind ourselves while sittingaround the Seder table, the journeycontinues beyond the Sea of Reeds.It bends onward, to the foot ofSinai where we received our Torah,onward through the Wildernesswhere we endure countless trials,onward toward a Promised Land.Even then, after entering the Land,our people’s obligations to be“a kingdom of priests and a holynation” endure, as both mandateand gift, for all generations tocome.The Passover narrative is not anevent of the past but a continuouscall— in times such as this, apainful and unrelenting cry. JudeaReform Congregation lives andbreathes as a mighty response tothe cry of a broken world, and inthis mission of ours there is nogreater power-tool than tzedakah.Tzedakah defines both our heritageand our legacy.As individuals and a congregation,may we honor our past withgratitude and bless our future withgenerosity. PRESIDENT’S LETTERAs Jews, the act and art ofphilanthropy, tzedakah, is deeplyconnected to our beliefs, ourbehaviors, our social awareness.Giving to our synagogue is astatement of the value we placeon Judaism— for ourselves, ourfamilies, and future generations. Itis both a responsibility (mitzvah/commandment) and an honor.The current pandemic has raisedawareness of the vulnerabilityof our community. For me, it hasalso brought to light our humanneed for community, compassionand belonging. Other challengeswe face in our country seem to bepushing us toward a stronger senseof needing to surround ourselvesin community, including social &racial injustice and rising AntiSeminism.Tzedakah at Judea Reform meansmuch more than “charity.” Forseveral years, the leadership ofJudea Reform Congregation hassought to develop a strongerculture of philanthropy among ourmembers. That culture can be seenin the pages of this Tzedakah Times,representing your passion6Tzedakah Times 20202020 in Reviewand commitment.
