S1Supplement 1International Version of thePIRLS 2001 and Reading LiteracyStudy Background QuestionnairesOverviewThis supplement contains the international version of the PIRLS 2001 and ReadingLiteracy background questionnaires in the following five sections:Section 1:PIRLS 2001 Student Background QuestionnaireSection 2:PIRLS 2001 Teacher Background QuestionnaireSection 3:PIRLS 2001 School QuestionnaireSection 4:PIRLS 2001 Learning to Read SurveySection 5:Reading Literacy Student Background QuestionnaireIt also contains the lists of the international background variables corresponding toeach of the background questionnaire items that were administered. The questionnaires were designed to provide an opportunity for individual countriesto make modifications to some questions or response options. This allowedcountries to include the appropriate wording or options most consistent with theirown national systems. In the international versions of the questionnaires, suchquestions contain instructions to the National Research Coordinators (NRC) tosubstitute the appropriate wording for their country and/or to modify or delete anyinappropriate questions or options. These instructions were indicated in two ways inthe questionnaires by the text NRC NOTE: and International Option . Whenused it was an indicator that the NRC was to substitute, if necessary, an appropriatenational option that would retain the same basic interpretation as the internationalversion.PIRLS 2001 Database User GuideS1-1

The documentation of the national adaptations to the background questionnaireitems is included in Supplement 2 of this User Guide. This provides the user withinformation required to evaluate the availability of internationally comparable datafor use in secondary analyses involving the PIRLS background variables. The questionnaires included with this Supplement have each question with itscorresponding variable name in the margin. The international background variables are listed in this supplement in order of thecorresponding questions in the international version of the backgroundquestionnaires. For each background variable, the corresponding internationalquestionnaire location is given. The questionnaire item numbers associated witheach variable are indicated by field locations according to the formats given in TableS1.1. The lists of background variables for the student, teacher, and schoolquestionnaires are presented in Tables S1.2 through S1.5.Exhibit S1.1S1-2Background Questionnaire Item Field Location FormatConventionsQuestionnaireLocationStudent QuestionnaireSG1-***Home Background QuestionnaireSH1-***Teacher QuestionnaireTG1-***School QuestionnaireCG1-***PIRLS 2001 Database User Guide
