I can’t concentrate, am forgetful, have no energy and no motivation” A lotof women in their 40s and 50s will recognize these symptoms. Talk to any group of‘middle aged’ women about how they feel and soon you will hear they strugglewith symptoms like: anxiety- fatigue-weight gain- low grade depression- hotflashes-lack of confidence, curiosity, drive and ambition-heart palpitations- asense of being overwhelmed-irritability- feeling flat and afraid- a general feelingof malaise. Not all women will experience a midlife crisis and (peri) menopause will affectsome women severely while others will hardly notice it. But the fact that midlifecrisis and menopause often overlap can make it seismic. Peri menopausalsymptoms can start as early as 35 and last anywhere from 5 to 13 years. Lack ofgood information plus the taboo factor still result in unnecessary suffering.Even before I reached the ‘magic midlife years’ I started gathering informationabout all this in order to be able to support my clients. All the experts acknowledgethe reality of a midlife “crisis”- a time of confusion, despair, fear, battling withhormones and efforts to fight the ageing process. The good news they also bring isthat beyond that lays a wonderful adventure, a time when our authentic self isfinally free to express itself. At this stage of our lives we tend to realize what isimportant to us and have the courage to go for it without worrying about whatothers will think.Having the wisdom and experience that we lacked when we were youngercombined with a new sense of urgency make that we start doing those things wedreamed about doing “someday”.Before you get to this ‘wonderful adventure’ stage however you mightencounter a few challengesKenmare NewsBobbi Kestler, D.C.Doctor of Chiropractichas relocated her practice to20 Henry Street, Kenmare(above's Brosnan's Pharmacy)commencing 1 June 2010087 298 2697Back, neck and joint pain, Headache, DigestiveProblems, Insomnia, TMJ, Arthritic DiscomfortWhiplash, Sport, Work and Automobile InjuriesGet Rid of Your Pains and StrainsTi mothyCl i ffordandS uzanneTeahanpi cturedatDami enandBrí dí nCl i ffordsWeddi ng.pic MaryO'NeillWomen experiencing a midlife crisis and or struggling with (peri) menopause oftenfeel separated, misunderstood and alone. JohnBrowner is the Assistant National Director Capital& Property of the HSE he along with his teamanswered a number of queries from the 4 potentialcontractors in relation to the location andspecification of the new hospital. The 4contractors JJ Rattigans, Glenbeigh Constructions,South Western Properties and BAM have beeninstructed to have completed tenders returned tothe HSE by Tuesday the 7th of September. As canbe seen from my monthly reports in the KenmareNews many hours have been spent in discussionswith the HSE and meeting with the Minister forHealth to ensure progress on the hospital. The factthat contracts were issued on the 2nd of July andwill be returned by the 7th of September is due tothe hard work of many people over many yearsespecially the Kenmare Hospital ActionCommittee.Kenmare Hospital To Include Wood ChipHeating System. In a previous edition of the Kenmare News Iwrote about a request from people in the area thata wood chip heating system be installed in thenew hospital. In my contact with John BrownerAssistant National Director Capital & Property ofthe HSE I made the case for such a system and hehas included it in the tender documents. Thissystem when installed would benefit the area bycreating jobs in the delivery and harvesting of thewood chip. The budget for heating the new facilitywill run into tens of thousands of euro annuallyand by having it in the specifications for the newbuilding will ensure the money stays locally. Two years of hard work results in legislationallowing planning to be extended for five moreyears. The Seanad passed on Wednesday July 14th thePlanning and Development Bill. It includedmeasures to allow for the extension of planningpermissions for up to five years. It is nearly 2years ago since I first met with the Minister forthe Environment John Gormley and argued theDalySenatorreports.benefits of altering the Bill to include myproposal. Following further meetings with hisdepartment and lobbying by some to have theproposal removed I am happy to see it included inthe final legislation. The new legislation includes aprovision which will allow applicants to apply forexisting planning permissions to be extended forup to 5 years if the relevant planning authority is"satisfied that there were considerations of acommercial, economic or technical nature beyondthe control of the applicant which substantiallymitigated against either the commencement of thedevelopment or the carrying out of substantialworks pursuant to the planning permission." Thisis something that I have been pushing for so thatpeople who have planning permission in place willnot be at a loss if they cannot secure a lone fromthe bank. The alternative was that manylandowners would lose the value of their land ifthe planning lapsed. Now planning authorities willgive notice of a decision on an application underthis new section within the period of 8 weeks.Double yellow lines are now on Baker's Lane.I would like to thank Vincent Horgan and PadraigTeahan of Kerry County Council for theircooperation in putting double yellow lines onBaker's Lane. For many years there has beenserious difficulty caused by cars parking near theturn into the lane. The parking at this location hasprevented businesses from having goodsdelivered, residents from accessing their homesand could have blocked emergency vehicles ifthey needed to access the area. I would also like tothank the people on Henry Lane for theircooperation in putting the new lines in place.Autism unit for Kenmare. The funding for the new autism unit in theKenmare National School has been secured. Thisis a much needed service and I am delighted to seeit coming to the area. Congratulations to allDaniel B.BuckleyW O O LM E R C H A N TMillstreet, Co. Due to a number of drainsbeing blocked following the installation of thenew pipe work for the town water supply, therehas been flooding of property in the area in recenttimes . With the work that has been carried out thecouncil is confident that future flooding will beprevented.Kenmare firemen are deserving of the bestfacilities. The professional manner in which the fire onHenry Street was dealt with by the member of theKenmare fire service, assisted by those fromSneem and Killarney, ensure that damage was at aminimum. The people living on the Street owe ahugh debt of thanks to all involved in bringing thefire under control but for their skill and trainingthe out come could have been much worse. Those who serve the people of the area and haveput their own lives at risk to save others aredeserving of the best facilities. The long runningissue of finding a new permanent home for thetowns fire service was a matter of debate thismonth in the Senate. The Kenmare fire brigade iscurrently in temporary rented accommodation onthe Killarney road. "It is my fear that this'temporary solution' could become Permanent,"was one of the points raised with Minister TonyKileen during the debate"The Kenmare firemen are deserving of the bestfacilities." In his reply the Minister said, "Thesituation is that the Department ofEnvoirnment Heritage and Local Government areconsidering a report from the Council in 2009requesting approval to commission consultants toprepare tender documents and to proceed to tenderstage. They have indicated that this request iscurrently being considered in the context ofbudgetary constraints on the Fire Service CapitalProgram." In this climate where we need to createjobs especially for those who used to work in thebuilding industry it would be appropriate to investin a new fire station for the town. I have arrangeda meeting with the Minister to ensure progress onthis vital facility.Pancake Cottage"The Biggest Little Treat in Kerry"Sweet & Savoury Pancake toppings, soup, scones & apple-pieWe have extended ourextensive Pancake MenuNEW AT THESTRAWBERRYFIELDICE-CREAMMENU!We serve highquality Ice-creamfrom Mac's,Killarney*****************WE ARE OPEN EVERY DAY, from 11 am - 6 pmLocated on the Moll's Gap - Sneem road (R568)for enquiries please call Margaret or Peter on 064-668 29 eld-ireland.com

Without the generous support of our sponsors, especially our main sponsor Eileen Murphy O’Shea of KenmarePuppy Parlor, it would not be possible for us to run our show atsuch high standards. This year the entertainment on the Sunday is by the popular‘The Sunday Cure’ they will be on stage from 3pm to 5pm.Kilgarvan Show are delighted to announce that they have securedthe service of Author, Broadcaster Frank Moynihan to conduct aseries of cookery demonstrations at this years show, Frank will beremembered for his years as food correspondent on the Gay ByrneShow on Radio 1. This years competition willbe held as usual in Looscaunagh Lake on Sunday August 8th from 2pmuntil 5pm. All would be anglers from pram to 17 years of age are mostwelcome. As usual club members will be there to help out. Hopefully theweather will be good and our prize winning chef's BBQ will be up top itsusual high standardAs you know Waterville is famous for exaggerating the fish numbers, that isthe sea-trout and grilse in the lake, but a conversation with a ghillie fromdown there the other day took the biscuit. He told us that there were somany juniors (sea-trout from 1/4 to say 1/2 lb) in the lake that the fishingwas spoiled as the juniors were grabbing the fly before the big fish got achance. This put me in mind of a ghillie from Lough Conn who told me thatyou could not catch trout in the Lake in July because of the salmon whowere quicker to grab the fly. What a load of old Codswallop.I must admit however that the fishing in Waterville from my own experienceover the last couple of years has greatly improved, and at this moment intime is excellent. The big worry is with talk of the fish farms going back intoproduction the lake will be destroyed again.Would you believe that 15 men could eat 71/2lbs of sausages plus othergoodies for brunch after their climb up to The Caha Lakes? As I have beeninformed that there is 16 sausages in a lb, that works out at 8 sausageseach which proves the old saying, plenty of exercise will give you a goodappetite. I wish I could say the same about the fishing which, due toweather conditions, was not great. By weather conditions I mean brilliantPhone 064 6642111 / Fax 064 6642121Email: kenmarecu@eircom.netsunshine, blue cloudless sky, scenery to die for. what a wonderful daydespite the fish keeping a low profile. The winner of the competition wasDerek Mulcahy with Denis Healy and Billy Clifford 2nd and 3rd.The Black Valley away competition was the exact opposite; black angryskies, lashing rain and high winds made fishing very difficult. But the troutwere lining up to take the fly, I never had better fun. The pity was that notenough anglers were put off by the bad weather or the clash with theMunster Final not to compete so even though a few hardy souls camedown to fish we cancelled the competition and just had a day out instead.Generally fishing is mixed, the editor Dick and myself have been troutfishing several times this year and, even though on each occasion wecaught fish, they were either in size or numbers nothing to be boastfulabout. We are hopeful that matters will improve as the seaon progresses. As on land so it is at sea. Mackarel and pollack are scarce enough by allaccounts and the same goes for all other species. Hope for animprovement.John D. drops in to see me every so often for a chat ad to test my reactionto his latest joke, which is usually of the risque variety. We were thinkingabout the way people long ago used to try and foretell the future from tealeaves. The trick was to swish the dregs around very fast in the tea cup, empty out the tea quickly and you were left with tea leaves. strung aroundthe inside of the cup. Some would look like stick men and women eitherclimbing up hills or crossing plains or whatever and from these a goodreader of tea leaves could tell you if you were about to go on along journeyor come into a fortune or even suffer some misfortune. The present trendof tea bags for everything has spoiled the harmless fun. Before I continuewith this story if you are of a sensitive nature I would suggest that you skipthis place of The Kenmare News!Do you know, I said to John D, when I got off the toilet the other morningthere lying in the bowl was a perfect figure five I wonder what it meant? That is an easy one I'll tell you, said John D., you are gong to be in deeps**t for the next five days! How right he was and I am afraid that we havestarted a 'motion' that has gone on for almost five weeks now. How do westop it? What if it continues for five months or even five years? I think I willstop drinking tea and change to cocoa or Horlicks before my nerves giveout. If there is anything to be learned from this story it is to flush the toiletas quickly as you can and for goodness sake do not look into the bowl asyou do so!
