We are many parts forming one Body of Christ. We are called tominister to one another with respect, dignity and compassion.

A NOTE FROM FATHER PHIL One of the symbols of Jesus’ Resurrection is the Easter egg. Because of my aversionto eating eggs, I’m not fond of the symbol, but there is no accounting for taste or forsome old customs. There are many fanciful tales about the origin of the Easteregg. Mary Magdalene plays a key part in one of them. The Byzantine tradition claims that Mary Magdalene was a prominent and wealthywoman who was cured by Jesus. She had been possessed by seven demons. Avery ill woman, indeed. In gratitude she &nancially supported Jesus and hisdisciples. Unlike most of those disciples, Mary Magdalene was faithful to Jesus evento the end as she stood at the foot of the cross and watched helplessly as hedied. Mary Magdalene had the privilege of being the &rst human being to meet the resurrected Lord. All of thisis scriptural. Now comes the Easter egg part. The Eastern legend claims that after the Resurrection, Mary Magdalene became a missionary and managedto &nagle an audience with Tiberius, the Roman Emperor. Evidently, wealth and power do have theiradvantages. While at supper, Mary Magdalene told the Emperor about Jesus and how Pilate condemned aninnocent man. Then she picked up an egg and explained how Jesus was raised from the dead, breaking out ofthe shell of a tomb and rising to a new life. Tiberius sarcastically remarked that a person could no more risefrom the dead than the egg she was holding could turn red. The egg turned red. To this day Byzantine Eastereggs are crimson. The color may also represent Mary Magdalene’s martyrdom. Of course, the Easter egg is not the most powerful symbol of what we celebrate during the EasterSeason. Not even the water that is blessed, or the bread and wine that is consecrated, or the oils that are usedto anoint are the most striking symbols of Easter. You and I are the most powerful symbols of theResurrection. We who view our human experience in the presence of the Resurrected Lord. We who havelived through enough winters to know that there will be a spring. We who have experienced loss and pain thatwere shattering, yet found our way to a new way of life even though a sense of emptiness remained. We whohave found forgiveness and healing and strength by the admission of a weakness, an addiction or sin. We whohave experienced great art, music and drama that were born of a trampled spirit. We who have questioned ourfaith and our God, maybe even abandoned them, but eventually found a new and more vibrant relationship withthe One who died for us. The red egg was not the most powerful symbol at Tiberius’ dinner party; Mary Magdalene was. Likewise, today, we are the most powerful symbols of the PaschalMystery. We are recipients of new life together withAubrey, Faith, Cameron and Ondrea who were baptizedand/or Con&rmed into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Weare all witnesses, no less than Mary Magdalene, who viewthe world and our human experiences as holy. We havebeen touched by the presence of God who left the tombempty and our hearts &lled. And, speaking of hearts &lled, here is a big thank youto Barb Dombrowski, Greg Wagner, Sheryl Moon, and allof those parishioners and staff who worked so hard tomake the Easter Liturgies so beautiful. GOOD NEWSWe often act out of ignorance. Armed with the best of intentions, we think we areseeing clearly and correctly, but we are not. We don’t always understand the fullmeaning of things and only perceive part of the truth. Hence, our judgments andactions can be impaired by myopic, incomplete or erroneous perceptions. Themeaning of life, understanding of human experience, and negotiating life’s challengescan all become skewed without proper understanding and vision. The resurrection ofChrist is the corrective to our incomplete and limited view of life. Looking at things withthe eyes of faith brings a depth of clarity and understanding to how we see God, ourselves, others, and the world. Even the disciples struggled with their limited understanding and ignorant perceptions. It was only when Jesus opened their mindsto understand the Scriptures that their eyes were opened. It was their “aha” moment when everything clicked. We all want thesubstance of our lives to come together, make sense, and have meaning. This is easier to achieve when things are goingpositively, and life is good. It is when suffering, disappointment, death, hardship, and injustice enter the picture that things canbecome unsettled and disoriented. Our faith in the goodness and love of God is tested. We tend to shift our focus on these dif cultand challenging moments and do not see them within the greater picture of how God intends life to unfold. We can gain, from thepassion and resurrection of Christ, the clear vision we need in order to move away from ignorance to enlightenment. We need our “aha” moment when everything comes together and clicks. It can come in a fleeting instant when we feel totallyconnected with God, where we nd ourselves, others and all of creation. It is a moment when all is right and good, regardless ofhow dif cult our journey. Our “aha” moment assures us that God is here, right with us, in us and around us bringing us a gift andblessing we can receive nowhere else: peace. In those brief sacramental encounters when we are lifted up out of ourselves andcentered, we can hear God say, “peace be with you,” and we feel secure. It’s all okay. The resurrected Christ has the power tobring this gift to us. Some people, as they are facing their deaths, remark about this peace. When looking into the window ofeternity, they experience a depth of joy and are amazed at God’s goodness and closeness. We are called to be witnesses to thisGood News.
