Author’s NoteThe Spending Plan is an essential element in gettingyour money straight and making it grow. I have usedit with clients in my financial counseling practice since starting my business in 1990. By creating a plan you assess yourneeds and wants. By tracking your spending you can identify areas of waste and excess. It helps you set perimetersaround your spending. This abridged edition differs fromthe original workbook in that it includes only a sample of theplanning and tracking worksheets along with instructions onhow they should be completed. There are no exercises ordebt reduction worksheets and strategies. In this abridgedversion you will find the key components that can help youcreate financial stability and fiscal freedom. Use them consistently and enjoy the journey to financial peace of mind.-1-

Spending PlanStep Two: Calculate Cash FlowIn the Monthly Category Recapsection (see page 7), fill in the monthlyplan totals for each expense category. The total amount from each category isyour total spending estimate for amonth. Now add the income sectionand transfer the amount to total income.Next, calculate your cash on handat the beginning of the month, including wallet, house petty cash and checking account balances. Your cash onhand added to your estimated monthlyincome will be your Monthly Incometotal. Below that enter your estimatedMonthly Expenses Total. Subtractingthe Monthly Expenses Total from Cashon Hand and Monthly Income Total isyour Cash Flow, either a positive or anegative number. If you Cash Flow ispositive, great! You can now analyzeever possible form your expenses, yourCash Flow still comes up negative, youshould begin to explore ways of increasing your income.A college student I worked withhad a negative cash flow of 300. Beingin school, she only had limited extratime for working. Her friends said shecould never earn 300 in the time shehad. But she called and said, “Glinda, ifI hadn’t put it all down on paper andfocused on it, believing in what had tobe done, I never would have found thisjob that pays me the exact amount Ineed for the hours that I can work!”You may not be able to find the extra time or the extra job that will bringin additional income, but there may beother things you can do. There mightbe something you can sell, or youmight want to have a garage sale. Orperhaps you could eliminate a serviceexpense by making a trade of serviceswith someone. The main idea is toidentify your needs and develop thethat amount and make decisions to in-plan for getting your goals met.crease spending in areas where youhave been somewhat conservative, orStep Three: Daily Tracking &Monthly Recapyou may allocate additional dollars tothe investment part of your SpendingPlan or you may make extra paymentsThere are two forms involved inthis part of the process: the Dailyon your debt. Spending PlanOn the Daily Tracking form foreach month, track all the money thatyou spend, item by item, day by day. Ifyou buy 10 worth of gas, put thatdown. But if you use a credit card writethe amount down in a different colorink. Don’t add it in with your total because you didn’t actually pay cash out.Credit will show up under debt repayment when you pay for your creditcard, but color coding will still allowyou to know how much money is outand where it is going. There are fivedaily tracking forms for each month.Add the daily “expenditures” across. The weekly totals should be carriedover to the Monthly Spending Plan forweeks 1-5. Total the expenditures“across,” then transfer to the MonthlyRecap section so you can comparewhat you thought you would spendwith what you actually spent. By doingthis tracking, you will begin to discoverThis may seem like a lot of workbut it quickly becomes second natureand you will be amazed at what youwill discover. You may find yourselfsuddenly spending money that wasn’tin your estimate at all, and then havingto take nibbles out of some of yourother areas; this may suggest that youneed to build your monthly estimatedifferently. You may begin to noticeunexpected rhythms and patterns toyour spending. But whatever you begin to learn, know without a doubt thatyour willingness to dedicate yourself tothis process will yield amazing results. It’s all part of becoming consciousaround money. The attention that youpay to money matters is what eventually leads you out of murky helplessness and into a position of power andcontrol.Step Four: Spending PlanAnnual RecapThe Spending Plan Annual Recaphow accurate your estimates were andyou will get a much better idea of what(see page 10) should be completed atthe end of each month. Blank WorkSheetsIn this section you will find enough blank copies of the Spending Plan,Daily Tracking Sheet, and Spending Plan Annual Recap for a 12-month time frame. A simple way to stay organized is to place the worksheets in a 3-ring binder with monthly index tabs. If you are starting thisprocess mid-year, begin with the appropriate month at the beginning ofyour binder and move the preceeding months to the end of your workbook. I also recommend you consider purchasing 12 pocket folders sowhen bills come in they can be placed in the appropriate month for easyaccessibility.Happy Tracking!- 11 -
