P age 6Urantia Foundation's News OnlineT R A I N I N G TE AC H E R S / F AC I L I TAT O R S F O R T H E U R AN T I ABOOK INTERNET SCHOOLWeek 2) the process ofdeveloping a course withappropriate and meaningfulquestions;Week 3) UBIS procedures forstudents and teachersincluding problem solvingtechniques; andBy Marta Elders, AssociateTrustee, Darien,Connecticut, USAThis past June ten previousstudents from the UrantiaBook Internet School (UBIS)had the pleasure andchallenge of taking theTeacher/Facilitator trainingsession for UBIS courses ledby Dorothy Elder. The four week periodfocused on:Week 1) qualities of aneffective teacher;Week 4) the proceduralprocess working with theUBIS system, course reviewcommittee (CRC), teacher/facilitator requirements, andany additional thoughts thatarose throughout the process.During the first week of thetraining Dorothy wiselyencouraged us to consider ourown experiences over the yearsand reflect on the teacherswho have been most influentialin our lives. What were thequalities we deemed mostimportant and/or essential? Byhaving each of us look to ourown experiences, we movedinto the “of” rather than the“about” sense of teaching. Wethen reflected on the abilities/qualities needed to be asuccessful UBIS teacher/facilitator and what skills areneeded to engage in internetteaching. This experiencereinforced our own wisdomand allowed us to focus on“discovery” rather than“interpretation” which is thehallmark of the UBIS project. Our second week assignmentwas to design a course, stateits purpose, write an intro forthe first paper/section to bestudied, and offer threequestions. Courses wereeither topical or thematic, and many of us commentedthat we would love to attendthe courses that were beingput forward by others. Duringthis period we consideredeach question using Bloom’staxonomy—knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, andevaluation. Using thisclassification as well asconsidering questions interms of fact, meaning, andvalue, gave us more clarityand understanding oflearning.we looked more closely at theexpectations for students anddiscussed different ways tosupport their learning andinvolvement. We alsodiscussed how to accomplishthis in the UBIS format. Wepondered ways to respectfullyinteract with students whilemaintaining structure andopenness to all while focusingon The Urantia Book and itsteachings. This led to an inquiryapproach as to how to solveproblems as they arise during acourse. In the course’s final week welearned more about theteacher/facilitatorrequirements, procedure forcourse preparation, and theavailable UBIS support andmentoring system. Dorothymodeled the teaching/facilitating style that has beenshown to be successful. Itbecame quite clear that whilewe don’t “teach” truth, we canlive truth in such a way that it isperceptible to others. As we began the third weekP L A N N E D G I V I N G T O U R A N T I A F O U N DAT I O NBy Gard Jameson,Treasurer, UrantiaFoundation, Boulder City,Nevada, USAUrantia Foundation’s legacyhas been, is, and will be topreserve inviolate the text ofThe Urantia Book. P age 8Urantia Foundation's News OnlineA R E A D E R ’ S E X P E R I E N C E S TAY I N G AT 5 33W D I V E R S E Y P A R K WAYBy “CT”, Dresden, GermanyHow would you imagine avisit to a place of "livinghistory?" Did you ever thinksomething like "if wallscould talk?" It would be tooeasy to say that the buildingat 533 W Diversey Parkwayis such a place. And whilethe Urantia Revelation livesin the hearts of men andwomen, and a physicalplace cannot be an innerhome like the place wherethe spirit meets ourpersonal minds, still, thereis something about thisbuilding. What place on earth couldhave a comparable meaningto us, like the Isle ofParadise has for all theenergy of the masteruniverse? While theRevelators hoped for us tobe “inside” the book, toshare our inner life withGod, still, in some way, thisformer house of the Sadlerfamily has given birth to away of life.I have been reading TheUrantia Book for about tenyears, and I never reallythought of the Foundationexisting somewhere otherthan in my mind. However, oneevening during the UAIconference this past July, Itook a bus ride from thatplace in my mind to thebeautiful art nouveau building at 533 W Diversey Parkway in Chicago. Imagine theflair of thesituation I foundmyself in; meeting Urantiansfrom 24 countries and learningof their personal lifeapproaches and their uniqueways of dedication to what theysee and do. The air of inspiration, the nights of exchangeinstead of sleep, the days ofspirit-learning instead of thenormal routine; this was a real“Whoopee” for me.Now try to imagine what Iexperienced when I entered theopen house of UrantiaFoundation. The Trustees werepresent. The building wasslowly radiating out feelings ofcalmness and welcoming. Thelight from the walls reflectedwarmth from the wood and theitems of the interior. How couldone not enjoy this time and thisplace as an encapsulation ofwhat has been accomplisheduntil here and now?On the second floor, people sataround the conference table.Little groups gathered on thebalcony enjoying some skyabove their heads along withconversation, people met in thekitchen, had conversations inthe corridor, everywhere. Meanwhile, Tamara Strumfeld andMike Wood were showing usthe staff’s offices and the visiting room on the first floor. The Urantia Book was on atable in the entrance hall. Carefully framed in light from theright and left, it was the centerof the building and the mirrorof life within it. In some way, it533 Conference Roomwould be the first and the lastthing you would see whenreturning to or leaving UrantiaFoundation.Dr. Sadler's woodenbookcases were beautiful andwell-tended with hardcoverand leather-bound books. Hisdesk, seeming not quite somodern through the eyes oftoday, allowed us to imaginewhat it would have been likein the early 1900s.After Techny, I spent an entireweek at Urantia Foundationbefore traveling to Salt LakeCity to attend The UrantiaBookFellowship’sconference. During my stay, Iobserved the staff at workand caught a glimpse of themperforming the multiple tasksrequired to run such a uniquefoundation. I also visited thebasement and saw all of thebooks in storage. Manyinteresting rooms hadcopies of books in amultitude oflanguages. The study group onTuesday evening had aneat vanguard of skillful cooks who prepareda welcoming dish forall the attendees. Manyguests from the TechnyConference were present. An elegant con-ference table, shaped like anellipsoid, with comfortable conference chairs is in the sameroom that the original Forumheld its gatherings. It offers anideal place for such meetings.Guests stay on the second floorof the Foundation, whichseems built to host any groupor individual. Mike Woodcontributed so much to ourexperience that we felt athome. He took us around town, showed us theevening silhouette of Chicago, and had us as guests at thePiano Bar in Maggianos.Jacob Dix, also spending theweek at Urantia Foundation, gifted me with the understanding that the work of receivingthis revelation was hard. Ifwe dive into the lives of thosewho came before us and howthey produced the earth coun-Mike Wood

Urantia Foundation’s physical book sales for the first quarter of 2011 were slightly up. North American book stores continue to struggle with internet sales and digital book competition. Downloads of The Urantia Book are increasing at a dramatic rate so the goal will be reached, but t
