Welcome as always and thank you!!On her feast day, we celebrate St.Brigid with story, images, music andsong, telling the legend of her miraculous cloak. Join us for this presentationwith Eli Coats, Ava Krocheski-Meyer,Julie Madden, Carin Vagle and otherSJA musicians at our family-friendlyliturgies!Parking: Please be considerate ofour neighbors and their property. Donot block driveways or park in their“on-street” handicapped areas.Americans seem to worship celebrity. With cable TV it is now to the point where almost anyone can have a show and be a “star”. You don’t even have to be heroic to be admired. Forinstance, look how many abusive chefs there are on TV. Just what I’ve always wanted – tohave some angry chef verbally abusing me over a few bad eggs.Or if you don’t want to be abused over cooking, how about going on cable TV and makingan idiot out of yourself by over consumption and narcissism – specialties of so many realityshows. In 1976 the movie, Network, written by Paddy Chayefsky and directed by SidneyLumet presented an imaginary television network where the anchor man appears to go crazy. That movie turned out to be prophetic. Almost all the crazy reality shows that we laughedat as ludicrous impossibilities in 1976 have turned out to be standard fare in 2015. And likePeter Finch’s news anchor character, Howard Beal, in Network it seems all of America isready to go to its windows open them and shout out “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going totake this anymore.”Someone wiser than me will have to explain the American need for attention. Interestingly,Jesus had the opposite problem. He didn’t want attention, especially in Mark’s Gospel. Oftenreferred to as the Messianic Secret, time and again Jesus tells those healed not to broadcastwho did it or he tells the demons who knew his true divine identity to be quiet. In fact nobody declares who he truly is until the centurion who stood at the foot of the crossproclaims at his death, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” How odd that at his weakest andseemingly in defeat Jesus is declared divine. But of course that was the point; his victory wasin total self-surrender not when he was full of himself. This is not a popular idea these days - we don’t like suffering. We are like Peter who tried totalk Jesus out of his death, “find another way, Lord”. Jesus called Peter a roadblock to hismission, a Satan. Of course reality tells us nothing is accomplished unless we die to something in ourselves; something is always given up to obtain something really good.We are three weeks from Lent, a good time to think about what we may need to die to, asJesus tells us. I hope someone notices.
