Your score reportwill include a total score, section scores, testscores, cross-test scores, and subscores — allof which will give you better insight into yourperformance. Your score report will also includethe NMSC Selection Index, which is calculated bydoubling the sum of your Reading, Writing andLanguage, and Math Test scores. NMSC usesthe Selection Index as an initial screen of thelarge number of entrants to its National Merit Scholarship Program. Here’s how it works:1. Students may choose to participate in Student SearchService when registering for a College Board test.2. As part of taking the PSAT/NMSQT, students areasked to provide information about themselves ontheir answer sheet.3. Participating, eligible organizations can thensearch for groups of students who may be a goodfit for their communities and programs, but onlyamong those students who opt to participate inStudent Search Service.4. The search criteria can include any attributefrom the answer sheet; however, we never shareinformation on disabilities, parental education,self-reported parental income, Social Securitynumbers, phone numbers, and actual test scores.

The colleges and organizationsthat participate want to find students who fitin with their environment, classes, programs,scholarships, and special activities. StudentSearch Service is simply a way for colleges toreach prospective students like you and informthem of their opportunities.»» Student Search Service will share your contactinformation only with colleges and qualified nonprofit educational or scholarship programs that arerecruiting students like you. Seethe "Test Regulations" section to learn how weprotect your privacy.Telemarketing and Internet Scams»» From time to time, we receive reports of phonescams in which callers posing as employees ofthe College Board contact students and familiesattempting to sell test-preparation products,or otherwise requesting sensitive personallyidentifying information, such as credit card andSocial Security numbers. Some of these callersengage in illegal spoofing to make it seem as ifthe call is coming from the actual company. Thesecalls do not come from the College Board. TheCollege Board does not make unsolicited phonecalls to students or families requesting this typeof information. This type of activity, known astelemarketing fraud, is a crime. Should you receivean unsolicited phone call from someone claimingto work for the College Board, including whereyour Caller ID indicates that the telephone numberoriginates from a College Board location, do notprovide the caller with any personal information.If you provide your phone number on your answersheet, representatives of the College Board willonly call or send text messages to you and yourfamily in response to inquiries generated by you,to provide or gather information about a test orprogram for which you registered, or regarding aninvitation to participate in free college planningservices. Should you have a question about theorigin of a phone call you have received in whichthe caller claimed to be from the College Board,contact the PSAT/NMSQT office (see page ii).Safety and Security Tips1. Be wary of unsolicited contacts, whether viatelephone or email.2. Remember that the College Board will nevercontact you to ask you to send your credit card,bank account, or password information over thetelephone or through email.3. Never supply credit card information to someonewho calls or emails you.4. If you suspect you have received a fraudulent callor email, contact the Federal Trade Commission(FTC) and your local authorities and provide themwith all the details.5. Keep in mind that if an offer appears too good tobe true, it probably is.6. To make a complaint, and to obtain moreinformation about protecting yourself fromtelephone and Internet scams, visit the FTC’sConsumer Information site at consumer.ftc.gov.Other Testing Questions You May HaveWhat to do if.»» you know in advance that you cannot take thetest on the date your school offers it:Your school may be able to arrange for you to takethe test at a neighboring school that has selectedthe other test date offered. Tell your counseloras soon as possible that you have a conflictingcommitment, such as a religious observance. Ifyou test at another school, be sure to take yourschool’s code number and an acceptable photoidentification with you.»» you are home-schooled and want to take thePSAT/NMSQT:You must make arrangements in advance withyour local high school or other nearby schooladministering the test. The PSAT/NMSQT office willsend you instructions.»» you missed the test but want to enterscholarship and recognition programs:For information about another route of entry tothe National Merit Scholarship Program, see thebox on page 7 of the NMSC section in the flip sideof this Student Guide.Students with DisabilitiesThe College Board provides testingaccommodations for students with documenteddisabilities. If you have not already beenapproved for accommodations by the CollegeBoard, it is important to speak to your counseloror teacher right away to determine if a requestfor accommodations needs to be submitted. If so,your school’s SSD Coordinator will use the SSDOnline system to request the accommodationsthat meet the needs of your disability.Test RegulationsStandard rules and regulations give all studentsthe same opportunity and prevent any studentfrom having an unfair advantage. When youtake the test, you will be asked to copy andsign a Certification Statement stating that youwill abide by these regulations, so read themcarefully. Also read about grounds for scorecancellation on page 5. Failure to follow thesetest regulations or any instructions given bythe test supervisor may result in your scoresbeing canceled.Use and Distribution of Scores andStudent InformationWhen you take the PSAT/NMSQT and signthe answer sheet, you acknowledge that youunderstand how your scores and personalinformation will be used.As cosponsors of the PSAT/NMSQT, the CollegeBoard and NMSC receive the scores of studentswho take the test as well as information studentsprovide on their answer sheets.»» After the eligibility request has been submitted,Some school districts and states receivePSAT/NMSQT scores with other informationabout their students. In addition, scores forstudents who qualify for programs described inthe section "Special Opportunities" are reportedto those programs. The PSAT/NMSQT Programdoes not report scores to colleges or commercialentities.»» If you are interested in participating in theIf your school participates in the PSAT/NMSQTthrough a bulk registration process, the CollegeBoard may receive your personal information,including first name, last name, sex, date ofbirth, and mailing address, from your school.This information will be kept secure and addedto your permanent College Board record to beused for score reporting purposes as well as theother purposes that are outlined in this guideand in registration materials. By taking thePSAT/NMSQT and signing the PSAT/NMSQTanswer sheet, you acknowledge that your schoolhas provided this information to the CollegeBoard and consent to the College Board retainingthis information.it may take approximately 7 weeks for you toreceive a decision letter. If you are approved foraccommodations, save this letter because it alsoindicates your eligibility for accommodations onother College Board tests, such as the SAT andAdvanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. Withlimited exceptions, the accommodations will remainin effect until one year after your graduation. You will not receive credit for anythingwritten in the test book. You may not leave theroom with your test book. You may use only yourtest book for scratch work (unless approved for anaccommodation).»» You may use an approved calculator (see page 32)only during the Math – Calculator portion of thetest; you may not have a calculator on your deskduring the Reading or the Writing and Languagesections, and you may not share a calculatorduring the test or during breaks. You may only useone calculator at any given time — if you broughta second one for backup, it must be kept underyour desk.»» You are not allowed to use: protractors; compasses;rulers; cutting devices; earplugs; scratch paper,notes, books, dictionaries, or references of anykind; pamphlets; pens, mechanical pencils,highlighters, or colored pencils; listening,recording, copying, or photographic devices; orany other aids. ETS reviewsirregularities and test scores believed to havebeen earned under unusual circumstances.»» Students may be dismissed from the testing roomand their answer sheets may be destroyed if theyfail to follow test regulations or instructions givenby the test supervisor. Once answer sheets aresubmitted for scoring, ETS reserves the right not toscore the answer sheet of a student who engaged inmisconduct or was involved in a testing irregularity.»» ETS reserves the right to cancel scores if thereis reason to doubt their validity. another PSAT/NMSQT, or to cancel the scores. Thestudent may also request arbitration in accordancewith ETS’s Standard Arbitration Agreement. Ifbefore, during, or after a review of questionablescores, ETS finds that misconduct has occurred inconnection with a test, these options will not beavailable even if previously offered.»» Score reviews are confidential. If it is necessaryto cancel reported scores, ETS will notify scoreusers, but the reasons for cancellation will not bedisclosed. This policy does not necessarily applyin group cases.»» ETS will forward all reports of misconduct ortesting irregularities to NMSC, which reservesthe right to make its own independent judgmentabout a student’s participation in the NationalMerit Scholarship Program.Test Fairness ReviewAll new PSAT/NMSQT test questions andcomplete new editions of the tests are reviewedby external, independent educators fromthroughout the United States. These reviews helpensure that wording or content are unambiguousand relevant and that the language used is notoffensive to or inappropriate for any particulargroup of students based on race/ethnicity orgender. Assessment staff ensure that the test asa whole includes references to men and womenas well as to individuals from varied racial, ethnic,and cultural backgrounds. Statistical proceduresare used to identify questions that are harder for agroup of students to answer correctly than wouldbe expected from their performance on other itemsin the test; these questions are excluded fromappearing on tests.Questioning a Test QuestionIf you find what you consider to be an error orambiguity in a test question, tell the test supervisorimmediately after the test.
