FEAST OF FAITHThe Liturgy of EmmanuelThe assembly has gathered from near andfar, on foot, by bus, by car, by subway, singlyand by twos and threes: single people, couples, families. Now that movement is ritualized andmade visible in the liturgy’s entrance procession. We are not alone on this journey; Christ iswith us. The procession is led by the cross, withthe image of Christ upon it. Candles, signs of aliving presence, are carried around the cross.Candles also accompany the Book of theGospels, another sign of Emmanuel, God-withus. The priest presider is likewise a sign ofChrist’s presence in our assembly; he will act inpersona Christi, in the person of Christ, whopresides at every Eucharist. As the procession begins, we stand and singtogether in our first act as a community. Thejoining of our voices begins to turn many intoone. The songs we sing range from ancientchants to contemporary hymns, but they havethe same purpose, to foster our unity and turnour thoughts to the mysteries we gather tocelebrate. We may feel that we can’t sing well, but “Christ always invites us to enter into song,to rise above our own preoccupations, and togive our entire selves to the hymn of his PaschalSacrifice” (USCCB, Sing to the Lord, 14).Elementary CCDClasses ResumeNext week!We will return to Zoom classes the weekstarting on January 11, 2021. S. Paluch Co.The Epiphany of the LordTREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONBefore long, people will be throwing MardiGras beads in the streets of New Orleans—purple, gold, and green. A few will be in on thesecret: the colors of the beads are derived fromthe gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purple forpower, green for good health. The gifts are also akey to the identity of the Christ Child: theincense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes todie.Centuries ago, today’s feast bore the heavyburden of celebrating all the manifestations ofChrist’s identity: the birth of Jesus, the comingof the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the weddingfeast at Cana. It was too much for one day.Fortunately, the one day has blossomed into awhole season of grateful celebration, stretchingbehind us into Advent, and ahead of us into theBaptism of the Lord and to Christ’s coming againin glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmaslights, and gather at the crèche for a favoritecarol and a prayer.—James Field, Copyright J. S. John is aCertified Grief Counselor and author of fivebooks. Sandy is a Director of ReligiousEducation with a master's degree in PastoralMinistry (Bereavement Emphasis). They are griefeducators, but in this series, you will learn theyhave experienced profound grief themselves. As a FORMED subscriber, you can access all 5sessions of this series. This series also comeswith a Participant's Workbook and a LeaderGuide which walks you through the programfrom early planning, to preparation andimplementation. This series is prayerful, practical, and personal. It has helped thousandsof people who are grieving the loss of a loved one.The title comes from 1 Thessalonians 4:13, inwhich St. Paul tells the Thessalonians, "Let usnot grieve as others who have no hope." Andthough faith can give us a confident expectationthat this is not our home, it does not preventgrief and suffering in this life. Jesus said manytimes, "Take up your cross and follow me." Thisseries teaches that grief is a natural reaction toloss, and mourning is our intentional response.Mourning is what we do with the pain we feel. Itintroduces The Seven Intentions of Mourning, each having its own unique purpose in helpingto heal our wounds when someone we love dies. This series is designed for group discussions; assuch, during the first four sessions, there is timefor six "Grief Peer Group" discussions, whereparticipants can share their own stories in a safeand validating environment.
