Immaculate Conception Church, Ira Township, MI — March 10, 2019 — Page 3Fr. Joe’s JottingsDo you by chance know the definition of a “netnanny”? Answer: a person hired to babysit kids andrestrict their access to the internet, social media, andviolent video games.Who hires net nannies?Wealthy Silicon Valleyexecutives who helped create internet sites, social media, and violent video games. That’s right—some of the very people who create andpromote the use of potentially dangerous forms oftechnology are going to great lengths to ensure their ownchildren are not affected by them (from the newsletter OffGrid Confidential, February 2019).Technology provides wonderful benefits, but it alsoinvolves some serious dangers—such as fosteringaddictions, undermining relationships, warping values, retarding social development, and negatively affectingpsychological, mental, and emotional health.Forexample, an Apple Co Corporation study shows that theaverage web user now has an attention span of only 8seconds. (By comparison, a goldfish has a 9 secondattention span.) Furthermore, the average American is onthe internet, a smart-phone, or some other electronicgadget from six to seven hours a day. Factoring in thetime also spent at work or school, when does that personhave time for more important things—such as exercise, family interactions, and prayer?Teenagers in particular are at risk for a mentally andemotionally-stunted development. Jean Twenge, authorof iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are GrowingUp Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy—andCompletely Unprepared for Adulthood, notes that “abruptshifts in teen behavior and emotional states” suddenlyemerged around 2012. Compared to the earlier millennialgeneration, today’s teens are much less individualistic andindependent—as illustrated by far less interest on theirpart in getting a driver’s license, going out on dates, andspending time in person with their friends, and far moretime spent in the solitude of their bedrooms with theirsmartphones.Twenge writes, “What happened in 2012 to causesuch dramatic shifts in behavior? . . . It was exactly themoment when the proportion of Americans who owned asmartphone surpassed 50 percent. . . . theirs is ageneration shaped by the smartphone and by theconcomitant rise of social media.” The resulting isolationcan easily result in decreased mental health and adeficiency in those social skills needed for healthy workhabits and personal relationships. Also, teen depression and suicide have risendramatically since 2011; there’s evidence that spendingmore than three hours a day on electronic devices raisesa teen’s suicide risk by 35 percent—due in large part tocyber-bullying (which is more common among girls thanboys). Also, data from the annual Monitoring the Futuresurvey reveals that the longer teens are on-line, theunhappier they are, whereas those who spend more timethan average in activities and relationships that don’tinvolve their smartphone are much more likely to callthemselves “happy.” Furthermore, between 2012 and2015 symptoms of depression rose among teenage boysby 21 percent, and by 50 percent for girls. In response to this data, Twenge writes, “If you weregoing to give advice for a happy adolescence based onthis survey, it would be straightforward: put down thephone, turn off the laptop and do something—anything—that does not involve a screen” (from The McAlvanyIntelligence Advisor, February 2019).Technology also poses potential hazards to adults—with one of the most prevalent examples being the use ofelectronic devices while driving. Texting while behind thewheel is obviously risky to oneself and other drivers—butthe same thing is also true of using hands-free cellphones. According to safety expert Professor Darryl Hillof Oakland University, being engaged in a cell phoneconversation creates a “cognitive” distraction: the driver’smind isn’t fully engaged in operating a potentiallydangerous vehicle. Indeed, the National Safety Councilestimates that at least 20 percent of automobile crashesinvolve talking on hand-held or hands-free cell phones.Furthermore, a University of Utah study suggests driverstalking on cell phones are as impaired as persons drivingintoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08 percent(from The Macomb Daily, February 25, 2019).In light of all these troubling trends and statistics, Ihave a simple suggestion: let’s use this season of Lent toexamine the role of technology in our own lives. Howdependent are we on our devices? Do we allow them tocrowd out other, more important things? Is the Lordcalling us to review and readjust our priorities? It is very healthy—physically, spiritually, andemotionally—to make sure we have enough time forourselves, our loved ones, and above all, for God, andLent is a wonderful opportunity to move in this direction.*****An engaged couple was planning their ceremony, andthe bride explained, “My white gown is a symbol of joy.”After thinking a moment, the groom asked, “Then why amI supposed to wear black?”****Thought for the Day:The speed with which information is communicatedexceeds our capacity for reflection and judgment, and thisdoes not make for more balanced and proper forms ofself-expression.--Pope Francis

Immaculate Conception Church, Ira Township, MI — March 10, 2019 — Page 5A Priest’s Reflection on Snow and theSacrament of ReconciliationA year ago, along with four of his friends, a priest from India made the long journey from South India to North India, inorder to experience snow. They thoroughly enjoyed the snow, and told the people of North India that they were blessedto have cold weather, and beautiful snow.Little did Father Pulimoottil realize that within a year, he would be blessed with more snow than he could everimagine. Today, Father Pulimoottil is one of the priests in the Diocese of Marquette, assigned to a cluster of parishes inthe Keweenaw Catholic Community, including St. Paul the Apostle in Calumet, MI.If you have ever traveled to Calumet, you would have seen the Keweenaw Snow Thermometer, located along US-41in the U.P. This snow depth indicator is maintained by the local road commission, and keeps track of how many feet ofsnow falls each winter in Calumet. The snowfall for this season is 266”.Obviously, this priest was not accustomed to driving in this type of severe conditions, so one of his parishionersadvised him to remove the snow and ice that was collecting around the wheels of his car. She warned him that if hedidn’t do this, it would be difficult to drive, potentially causing an accident.Father Pulimoottil’s reflection on that conversation is worth sharing: “It was a thought provoking incident because Ifound a close connection with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our regular confession is like clearing snow & ice fromour vehicles. If we do not bother, or neglect to keep it cleaned off, it can block our way or cause an accident. Theaccumulation of sins in our soul may cause the same to our spiritual life. It can block us from the flow of Christ’s graceand blessings on us and cause an accident of frustration and disinterest. Jesus, through the priest, is waiting at theconfession room to prepare a clear way for your faith journey. He wants to protect all of us from the ruins of sin. Letthe snow remind us about the need of immediate action for our souls to experience His everlasting and unending lovein its fullness.Divine Mercy Book Discussionand Prayer GroupFree OnlineCoarseSTARTS MARCH 11THRUNS THROUGHAPRIL 20TH!THE BEAUTY OFSCRIPTURETHE BEAUTY OF THECHURCHTHE BEAUTY OFTRUTHTHE BEAUTY OF VIRTUETHE BEAUTY OFSPIRITUALITYTHE BEAUTY OF HOPEBEAUTY OF BELIEFDivine Mercy GroupWhat takes place during a group gathering? Is it for you?‣‣‣‣‣-Are you looking for a community ofbelievers to connect with?-Do you enjoy reading things that will bringyou closer to Jesus?-Do you like discussing topics in faith-sharinggroups?-Does praying for others and having otherspray for your intentions appeal to you?If you answered "yes" to any of the above,we are praying that you will make it a pointto come and check it out!We will be reading the Diary of Saint FaustinaDiscussing the bookExperiencing God's great loveGathering for prayerThere will also be occasional opportunitiesfor Spiritual and Corporal Works of MercyWhen: It meets every other week and willmeet during Lent on March 14th and28th and April 11th.Where: Immaculate Conception Parish HallTime:Morning Group: 9:30-11amEvening Group: 6:30-8:00pmPlease contact Laura Somogy for moreinformation at 810 334-5101(Call or text). What will be covered?-Weekly 20 minute lectures featuring distinguished faculty members from Sacred Heart Major Seminary-Weekly recommended readings and links to additional learning resources (30 Minutes a week)-Weekly self-test to see what you’ve learned-Our Parish will be offering to watch the weekly lecture together and discuss readings and share witheach other on Wednesdays during Lent starting March 13th at 9:15am in the Parish Hall.-Online discussion is also available.Sign up at: http://explore.shms.edu/beautyofbelief or contactLaura at (810)334-5101 for assistance.Consider this a Lenten Retreatexperience to grow a deeperappreciation of the richness andbeauty of our Church’s teachingsand an opportunity to spect timewith the Lord.

We are soproud of their hard work!TODAY!The Parish Hall willbe open forParish OfficeBusinessFrom 9 am until 12 pmRosary MakersIT IS A POWERFUL ACTION THAT WE ARE DOING!Most of us pray for our families, and we can do it morepowerfully by praying the Rosary. As we do so, we arebringing each family member to Mary, as she brings thembefore Jesus so that we receive His powerful assistance.Prayer is not a one sided talk with God. It should be adialogue where we speak and allow time for listening. Beopen to God’s voice as you talk with Him. He wants tocarry on a conversation with you, and He will do this asyou pray the Rosary for each family member. He will stopyou at times, have you slow down and help you to prayspecific, powerful requests as you intercede for a familymember. This means REAL PRAYER will be happening –not just you doing all the talking. You will be dialoguingwith God as you pray through the Rosary. The season of Lent is a time for developing new prayerpatterns or spiritual growth patterns that can become ahabit, because as scientists have proven the human brainneeds to repeat an activity for 30 days in order for it tobecome a habit. It has been said that “the Rosary is the most beautifuland the most rich in graces of all prayers”. If you arehaving a hard time praying the Rosary, ask our BlessedMother for her help. Also, the next time you pick up yourRosary beads, imagine that you’re holding Mary’s handand taking a trip to visit Jesus. For when we pray theRosary, that’s exactly what happens!Lenten Luncheon And Movie EventsSundays: March 10Th, 24Th And April 7ThFollowing The Noon Mass In The Parish HallJoin us this Lent as we dive more deeply into God’s great Mercyand the power of prayer!
