Elizabeth Seton Residence BoardOn behalf of the Sisters of Charity and the Board of Directors, staff andresidents of the Elizabeth Seton Residence, I welcome you to our 2019Annual Report.In June of this year, Elizabeth Seton Residence will celebrate its 40thanniversary. Forty years ago, the world was a very different place with scarcequality care available for those in need of skilled nursing care. Respondingto this unmet need, the Sisters of Charity established what would grow intoa five-star, mission-driven facility that would improve the lives of so many,Elizabeth Seton Residence.Sr. Joan J. Thispast year, ESR welcomed a 164,000 matching gift challenge from Albertand Diane Kaneb for the purchase and installation of an overhead HoyerLift system for all resident rooms. ESR also received grants from the LynchFoundation, Wellesley Bank Charitable Foundation and Medline IndustriesFoundation. And of course, the ESR community always is grateful to all ourdonors who support us in any way that they are able.During this current year, 2020, I will complete my term as board chair. From the AdministratorWelcome to the Elizabeth Seton Residence Annual Report. As we prepare tocelebrate our 40th anniversary, I write to you with exceptional pride in the ElizabethSeton Residence.We are driven by an unwavering mission to improve the health, well-being andsense of purpose of those we have the privilege to serve. Each day an exceptionalgroup of people come together to share their talents and skills to make the ElizabethSeton Residence what it is today. They are at the heart of what we do and are key tomaking a difference. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such a dedicated team.Lori A. The longstanding commitment to providingmission-driven, compassionate care and the resulting quality outcomes havebeen noted on the national level. We were honored to be recognized for the 8thconsecutive year as a Top Performing Skilled Nursing Facility by US News & WorldReport in both Short Term Rehabilitation and Long Term Care categories, andcontinue to be recognized by the Center for Medicare Services as a 5-Star Qualityfacility, a distinction we have maintained consistently since 2013.2019 was a successful year strengthened by a sound strategic plan, new fundraisinginitiatives and a renewed commitment to preparing for and embracing the everchanging landscape of healthcare delivery. At a time when many facilities struggle tomaintain occupancy above 85%, our Catholic, not for profit facility has consistentlyachieved occupancy of 96%.Through your generous support we met the matching gift challenge for the purchaseand installation of an overhead Hoyer Lift system for our resident rooms. We alsopurchased new medical equipment, including a state-of-the-art bladder scannerand diathermy machine. A wonderful digital player piano was purchased for theenjoyment of our residents. Your donations have supported a myriad of programsand initiatives that will help improve the daily lives of those we serve. You are anintegral part of our mission and we are most grateful for your support.I am excited about the year ahead. We can all be proud of the Elizabeth SetonResidence and its legacy for providing excellent care for all we serve. 2019The Year in ReviewThe Elizabeth Seton Residence is honored forthe 8th consecutive year to be named a USNews and World Report “Top Performing” SkilledNursing and Rehabilitation Facility in the 2019 2020 National Best Nursing Homes report.The Elizabeth Seton Residence achieved another year of strong financialperformance in fiscal 2019, demonstrating the strength of our winningteam, new fundraising initiatives and successful management strategies.In April, Tim Clark ran the 2019 Boston Marathon for the Elizabeth SetonResidence. Tim’s run raised over 5,000 for clinical equipment.Our residents enjoying their favorite tunes on a new digitalplayer piano donated by a generous individual through the2019 Annual Appeal.We are most grateful to Albert & Diane Kaneb for their Matching Gift Pledgeof 164,000 toward the purchase and installation of an overhead HoyerLift System for the dignity and comfort of all our residents who requireassistance when moving from a bed to a chair. We are pleased to announcethat the match has been met!In May, the 2018 Boston Red Sox World Series Championship Trophy andRing came to the Elizabeth Seton Residence. Many thanks to Sam Kennedyand the Boston Red Sox.We wrapped up another successful Annual Appeal. Funds raised helpedus purchase a digital player piano and replacement medical equipment,including a new bladder scanner. Thanks to all who helped us “Meet theNeed”!We are fortunate to continue our partnership with the area’sleading colleges and universities to train future health careprofessionals. In December we welcomed new Nursinginterns from MassBay Community College and Regis College.Nursing Interns from MassBay Community CollegeOur Rehabilitation Department hostedOccupational Therapy students from RegisCollege and the American International College.Seminarian Bernie Gardzalla from Pope JohnXXIII Seminary, joined us for his pastoralplacement in a health care setting internship.International Study Students from TokyoUniversity of Social Welfare visited with ourresidents and shared their origami skills.2019 Annual Report 5Seminarian Bernie Gardzalla

2019The Year in ReviewElizabeth Seton Residence CNA, Beulah ClaytonandAdministrator, Lori Ferrante providedtestimony at the Massachusetts State House insupport of improved Medicaid funding for skillednursing facilities.We are grateful to the Wellesley Bank Charitable Foundation for their grant topurchase a Diathermy machine for our Rehabilitation Department.In November, The Lynch Foundation awarded a 25,000 grant for the Hoyer LiftProject. We are thankful for their support.Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club awarded a grant to the Elizabeth SetonResidence for a custom-made accessible game table.Staff Education donations enabled attendance at over 20 seminars and workshopsrelated to dementia care, clinical skills development, quality initiatives, leadershipskills and regulatory requirements. We offer employees the opportunity to growand develop the skills needed to keep pace with the ever-changing field of healthcare.During the seasons of Advent and Lent, we partnered withMarillac Residence to offer a Taize Worship Service. Based onthe practice of the Taize monastic community in France, ourservice at Elizabeth Seton Residence included scripture readingsand reflections, moments for silent contemplation, and lines ofsung communal prayer.Faith Formation and Prayer – residents studied different aspectsof their faith and prayer practices and hymns with Director ofSpiritual Care, Tanya Rybarczyk.Rose DiMonda, RN, Director of Nursing, served on theMinuteman Tech advisory board, collaborated on their CNA andpre-nursing curriculum and was a judge for their senior healthprojects.Giving Tuesday donations wereused to support the Hoyer LiftProject.A Mass of Thanksgiving wascelebrated in May to thank ourdonors.Donations helped supportpopular resident programs,including Ballroom Dancing,Drumming Circle and Music &Memory.

Needs ListMarillac Residence Administrator, Sr. Judith Breen, SC,Abby McKie and Lori FerranteDining Services Director, Abby McKie, wasawarded the 2019 Unidine Way Team MemberCommitment Award for her excellent customerservice and teamwork.Partners HealthCare and NaviHealth – we are oneof five skilled nursing facilities selected to partnerwith the Newton Wellesley Hospital ACO’s PostAcute Team, working with their Transitions CareManagers to help facilitate successful rehabilitationoutcomes.The Elizabeth Seton Residencecontinued its participation ina multi-year study to reduceantimicrobial use in skillednursing facilities for residentswith dementia. This study issponsored by the NationalInstitutes of Health and isaffiliated with Harvard MedicalSchool.As an independent, non-profit, Catholic entity, we are faced withsignificant financial challenges. Over 60% of our residents rely onMedicaid to cover the cost of their care. We need your help to fundongoing program development, perform necessary updates to ourfacility, purchase new equipment and find the means to provide ourresidents, the sisters and members of the community with the carethey need and deserve. 2019 Meet the Need DinnOver 180 friends and supporters attended the Elizabeth SetonResidence Annual Meet the Need Dinner at the WellesleyCountry Club on Thursday, October 10, 2019. The Dinnerraised over 90,000. Guests were entertained by Bo Winikerand his jazz trio, and emcee for the evening was Wellesley’sown Teri Adler. A silent auction, raffle and video presentationcapped the festivities.Mr. & Mrs. Jack CampionDr. Margaret Mary Fitzpatrick, a Sister of Charity and President of Saint ThomasAquinas College, whose parents lived at the Elizabeth Seton Residence, spokeeloquently regarding the experience of being a family member and the need tofinancially support the Residence in carrying out its mission.The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club was honored for their generosity,dedication and commitment to volunteerism at the Elizabeth Seton Residence.And, we were pleased to announce that a 164,000 matching gift for the purchaseand installation of an overhead Hoyer Lift system, had been pledged by Albert &Diane Kaneb.
