WHY DO WE ASK FORA PORTFOLIO?At DMU we have put everything in place to help you build the skillsand confidence you need to succeed in the world. We ask to look ata portfolio as part of our selection process to give us an idea of yourskills, help us understand if you will enjoy studying with us and to makesure you are choosing the right course for you.A good portfolio should contain quality work: it’s not about quantity.Be selective about what to include and avoid repetition, werecommended 15 to 25 pieces. Ensure that your work is clearly laidout and easy to look through.We receive and view a variety of portfolios, and whether you are currentlyinvolved in creative studies or not, we will look for the potential in yourwork so please respond to the advice in this guide as best you can.WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? A passion for the subject and your knowledge of the broadercontext of fashion, photography and styling. Who or what inspiresyou as a creative fashion stylist and/or communicator? Visually show us the fashion related publications you read,websites or fashion blogs you visit, your cultural interests in film,music, architecture, dance, travel, sports and so on Drawing skills – in the broadest sense How you research, generate and develop your ideas Awareness and knowledge of photography, video, digital andsocial platforms Good illustration skills for the subject area of fashion Your potential to learn and have ambitions for your own future,along with showing your creativity and imagination02

WHAT SHOULD APORTFOLIO CONTAIN?DRAWINGPROJECTS Your digital portfolio needs to demonstrate agood level of drawing for fashion through useof different media and styles We want to see how you develop an idea andhow you research and respond to a project brief Show your drawing ability through sketchwork relevant to fashion and textiles,including still life, life drawing, and initialfashion design and fashion styling sketchesShow evidence of a project in yourportfolio that demonstrates creativity, adeep involvement in your work and thecommunication of your conclusion or final idea The use of Photoshop, Illustrator or CAD forillustration, technical elements and generalpresentation can be usedThis could be any art or design project(either as part of your course or anindependent project) Idea generation can be demonstratedthrough sketching, model making,photographic experimentation and final ideascan be shown through a photoshoot and/orillustration work Include personally generated work: it showsyou can work independently without beingdriven by a brief or a deadlineSKETCHBOOKS Sketchbooks reveal how you utilise imageryand build a concept to develop ideas throughexperimentation. They will show us how youapproach a project, as well as evidence of thesubject matter that inspires you You should include primary and secondaryresearch source material, such as exhibitionvisits, study trips abroad, artists’ inspirationand own interests Include some scans or photographs ofyour sketchbooks that demonstrate visualreferences to contemporary fashion brands,designers, photographers and illustrators thatshow your interests in the wider issues offashion design0304

Design by Allarna Webb,Fashion Design BA (Hons) graduateHOW TO PHOTOGRAPH ANDDIGITISE YOUR WORK 05Take the highest quality images you can ofyour work, most smart phone cameras willhave a high enough resolutionGood lighting is really important, try tophotograph your work in front of a windowto provide bright natural lighting withoutshadows or distorted colours. The flash onyour phone may be too bright! Make sure any photographs of your workare taken at the best angle to showcase allaspects of it – decide if landscape or portraitis best for the image so there is no wastedspace in your photograph It’s best to place your work against a plainbackground when photographing it sothat it’s easy to see and there is nothingdistracting from the work When scanning your work make sure youchoose a high-quality resolution and largefile size to ensure it is not compressed ordistorted Make sure it’s clear what your work is andsome of the techniques used to create it. Youwon’t be able to talk to us in person aboutyour work so you may want to include a short10-20 word description of each piece Rather than directing us to your website orInstagram account, please include the piecesthat you would like us to see within yourdigital portfolioSIZE AND FORMAT Please submit your digital portfolio as amulti-page single PDF file Files need to be compressed or zipped andnot exceed 1GB in size and submitted viawww.mailbigfile.com/dmuac For moving images such as animation orvideo please use .mp4, .MOV or .AVI format All work needs to be saved in one folder andlabelled with your name, student referencenumber and the name of the course you haveapplied for06
