We offer one specialisation in fashion design and one infashion media. HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN FASHIONSPECIALISATION: DESIGNDESCRIPTIONIf you enjoy working with your hands in a creative environment, if you are self-reliant, creative and are eager to make animpact in fashion design, then the Design specialisation is for you.This programme offers you an introduction to the fundamentals of fashion design, pattern design, sewing as wellas computer design, marketing and brand management, trend analysis and visual merchandising. This is a practicalprogramme with a theoretical foundation.The core modules are Creative Design, Pattern Design and Garment Construction and these modules will guide youthrough the process of fashion illustration, pattern making and sewing. Here you are taught basic sewing skills andfundamental concepts of design and pattern making that assists you to turn a concept into an actual garment.OUTCOMESThe programme is designed to develop the practical skills (i.e. principles and their application) and basic theoreticalcompetency (i.e. theories and methodologies, including principles) to operate as a craft-based fashion practitioner atentry- level fashion contexts in the world-of-fashion-work. Students will be able to useproportion for the process of designand apply fundamental designprocesses and elements of design tothe fashion context.Students will be able to findinspiration from external sources tocreate visual storyboards and usepresentation techniques.The primary focus of this moduleis on developing students’ ability toapply elementary measuring anddrafting methods. The module willassist students in understanding andapplying proportion, constructingmock-ups, and creating basic patternsin line with entry-level pattern makingpositions in the fashion industry.In this module, students will developthe ability to use basic garmentconstruction equipment effectivelyand efficiently. MODULE DESCRIPTION CONTINUEDMARKETING AND BRANDMANAGEMENTStudents will be introduced to theconcept of marketing within thefashion industry. The module willoutline the marketing process andprinciples, the role of a marketingpractitioner in a fashion business, thefactors that influence the macro- andmicro-environment and therole of branding. This knowledgewill support the students’ ability toidentify a competitive advantage fortheir own designer brand, to be able toconduct a basic SWOT analysis, andto develop a basic marketing planCOMPUTER LITERACY ANDDESIGNThe module will introduce students toCAD and its application in the fashionindustry. Students will be able toidentify and discuss the various typesof computers and the componentsof a computer, and understand therole of peripherals: USBs, hard drives,printers and a file server. Studentswill be equipped to navigate theMac Operating System, apply thefunctions associated with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; andwill be able to use the internet forvisual research and professionalcommunication.TREND ANALYSISHISTORICAL FASHION STUDIESStudents will be guided through theprocess of analysing fashion trendsin the manufacturing, creative andcommercial fields. The module willdevelop the students’ ability to makedesign decisions based on futuretrends within the context of a fashionretailer (what customers will buy).Students will be able to understandtrend-related information, and willbe able to respond to these trendsthrough creative decision-making.Students will be introduced to specificfashion items prevalent duringspecific eras. Students will reviewthese scaffolded influences thathad an impact on the evolution offashion throughout history. Studentsshould be able to link these historicalinfluences to their own designs andshould be able to understand thatfashion aligns to economic, political,and social conditions.VISUAL MERCHANDISINGTEXTILES AND FASHIONThe students will be introduced tovarious types of displays, displaycomponents, shop fixtures and fittingsto develop their ability to create avisually appealing window display fora specific fashion brand. Students willbe able to use visual communicationto promote sales through aestheticdesign choices. The module willdevelop the skills required to supportstudents’ entry into the world-ofwork as junior visual merchandisers.Students will explore the relationshipbetween the textile industry and thefashion industry with a clear focus onsustainability. Upon completion ofthe module, students will be able toidentify various textiles and explainits use, recognise the differentcompositions of textiles, describethe different types of textiles, anduse jargon associated with textilesto discuss how textile technologyimpacts fashion.ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThe admission criteria for the Higher Certificate inFashion are: Minimum admission requirement is a NationalSenior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 40%for English as a first or additional language Pre-2008, a Senior Certificate (SC) with aminimum of 40% for English as a first or secondlanguage. National Certificate (Vocational) with aminimum of 40% for English as a first or secondlanguage and no additional specified subjectsprescribed at the further education exit level An admissions test is required for the Designspecialisation for diagnostic purposes.04 December 2020

Students willuse styling basics to engage in the artof dressing; where they will explorethe various face and body shapes anddiscuss clothing and accessories thatsuit each of these in relation to theclient brief. Students will learn aboutusing clothing as a visual narrative, tofurther their understanding of Stylingprinciples.In this module, students will acquirebasic knowledge of digitalphotography in a social media contextand will be trained in methods andtechniques of taking fashion photosusing a smartphone.
