A historian of the U.S. Civil War andthe American South, Dr. Faust is also the Lincoln Professor ofHistory in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She previouslyserved as founding dean of the Radcliffe Institute for AdvancedStudy (2001-2007).Before coming to Radcliffe, Dr. Faust was the AnnenbergProfessor of History and director of the Women’s StudiesProgram at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author ofsix books, including, most recently, This Republic of Suffering:Death and the American Civil War, published in January 2008.Dr. Faust’s honors include awards in 1982 and 1996 fordistinguished teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. Shewas elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in1994 and the American Philosophical Society in 2004. Shereceived her bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr in 1968, magnacum laude with honors in history, and master’s (1971) anddoctoral (1975) degrees in American civilization from theUniversity of Pennsylvania.

50th Reunion Guest SpeakerLieutenant Colonel David R. Downer,USAF (Retired)David Downer graduated with the Harvard College Class of1963. He is currently a Financial Advisor with AmeripriseFinancial, owning a franchise in Sarasota, FL.Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, inArchitectural Sciences, he entered active duty in September1963 and was assigned to the Harvard Graduate School ofDesign where he studied architecture from 1963 to 1965. Hewas then assigned to duties in the Civil Engineering career fieldat bases in Ohio and Alaska, and then was tapped for duty as aMinuteman Missile Combat Crew Commander for the next fouryears at Minot AFB, ND. He returned to civil engineering dutiesin 1973, serving in Thailand and Langley AFB, VA where he wasinstrumental in activating the first operational wing of F-15fighter aircraft.In 1978 he was assigned for duty in Tehran, Iran, and wasevacuated following the revolution in early 1979. A staffassignment followed at Strategic Air Command Headquarters atOffutt AFB, Omaha, NE, after which he assumed command ofthe 601st Civil Engineering Squadron, Sembach AB, Germany.Returning in 1984, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff forEngineering & Services, Headquarters, 15th Air Force, MarchAFB, CA. He retired from active military service in 1986.Following retirement, and prior to entering the financial field, hewas in civilian facilities management. Positions included PostEngineer at Valley Forge Military Academy, Director of PhysicalPlant at Swarthmore College, Director of Facilities Operationsfor the Vanguard Group and Project Manager for JohnsonControls Facilities Management Division.Colonel Downer is also involved in community activities in hishome town of Sarasota, FL. He is a deacon in his church, adirector on the board of the Harvard Club of Sarasota, vicepresident of the Ivy League Club of Sarasota and is active in theAir Force Association’s local chapter.The Oath of OfficeI, having been appointed an officer in the United StatesMilitary, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will supportand defend the Constitution of The United Statesagainst all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I willbear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I takethis obligation freely, without any mental reservation orpurpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfullydischarge the duties of the office upon which I am aboutto enter.
