Thesegreat auditoriums have been packed to over-flowing with monster congregations in the gripof Holy Ghost revival. The many astonishingtestimonies of those who have been miraculouslyhealed in the great gatherings have receivedworld-wide publicity through the medium ofthe secular press. The vacant spinal carriagesand bath chairs, the discarded crutches, thecast-off steel and other kinds of body jackets, thecripples who now walk, the cancer and tumourcases that have been miraculously healed, alleloquently testify to the supernatural characterof his ministry. The author of this book, having ministered to the sick for a period ofmany !years after being healed himself, writes with unequivocal authority. He hasnot submitted abstract theories but concretefactsfacts that have been demonstrated withphenomenal success in his great ministry ofrevival and healing.

HEALING RAYSBut unto you that fear My Name shall theSun of Righteousness arise with healing inHis wings (or raysMoffatt)Malachi iv. 2.Healing rays I Yes, they radiate from ourLord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the gloriousSun of Righteousness. We have been conscious of them as we have ministered in HisName, and have come under their vivifying,health-givingandinvigorating properties. The warmth of the spiritual calorific ray hasdriven away the coldness of unbelief, and thetransforming effect of the actinic has resultedin changed lives and homes. The light thatcomes from Christ not only illuminates andbeautifies the soul, it gives health and vigourto the mortal body. Under the powerfulinfluence of His spiritual rays we have seenthe weak grow strong, the diseased madewhole and the barren life become fruitful. We have seen them steal through the avenuesof faith until the weakened frame has beenquickened and healed. This book on healing simply contains the subject matter of ourstudies and addresses during ma ny years'ministry in revival and healing campaigns, put into book form in response to requeststhat have been increasing each year.

HEALING RAYSCHAPTER IBodily HealingIntroductoryExplanatoryTHE subject of bodily healing is evidentlyclaiming the attention of Christendom, and there is a widespread desire to knowthe truth respecting this most important theme. It has brought forth volumes from the pens ofable writers, some relegating all miracles ofhealing to a past dispensation, while otherspostpone them to the coming Millennium. Ithas also become a theme for discussion in mosttheological colleges, and the Scriptures arebeing searched with new earnestness and purpose. The one great reason why it is dominat-ing the mind of the public is the fact thatthousands are bearing testimonies to bodilyhealings. They claim to have been miraculously healed in answer to prayer under theministry of the laying-on of hands or theanointing with oil, as people were in Bibledays. These manifestations of healing are notconfined to the British Isles, they are beingexperienced over the whole world. Everywhere deliverances from deadly diseases areavowed, and miracles are being wrought, the1

Healing Raysreplicas of which can only be found in the Bible.Neither are they exclusively experienced by anyone particular sect or community that holdsbodily healing as one of its tenets of belief, butby spiritual ministers, evangelists and churchworkers of all denominations. The method ofprocedure in ministering to the sick is not alwaysthe same. Some evangelists are called uponto lay hands publicly, and vast congregationshave witnessed astounding miracles, othersanoint the sick with oil in the quiet bedroom, and have rejoiced in healing as a result of theirAgain there are the many prayercircles where written requests for healing areremembered before the Throne. The sourceof all healing virtue is in the Lord Jesus Christ, and although methods differ, the all-importantmatter is to get the sick into touch with Him.obedience.DIVINE HEALING V. FAITH HEALING.In studying bodily healing there are a fewthings that must be kept in mind. The firstis the difference that can exist between Divinehealing and what is known as faith healing. We prefer the former term because it generallyimplies belief in bodily healing as it is exclu-sively taught in the Scriptures, whereas thelatter might mean healing by faith along themany lines of psychology. The former denotesacceptance of the Bible as the Word of Godin its entirety, and healing through the LordJesus Christ. The latter can imply belief in2

Bodily H ealingany kind of faith healing that might be taughtin books that are decidedly anti-Christian.HEALING IN TWO REALMS : THE NATURAL.The next thing to bear in mind is that healingcan be obtained In two realms, namely, naturaland supernatural. That healing comes alongnatural lines is clear to all. It has pleased Godto manifest this in the animal creation as wellas in the human creation. The beast of thefield is healed of its wounds as a result of anatural law which operates, and it is thebounden duty of both saint and sinner to assistthat law in every legitimate way. The suffering animal calls for due and proper attentim, the withholding of which under any pretextwould be cruel and inhuman. Who could conscientiously justify himself if, knowing anycreature to be in pain, he did not, wheneverpossible, call in someone with ability to alleviateits suffering ? The service of those who arequalified to co-ordinate with this natural law,in the suffering animal creation, can never berepaid ; and the knowledge they possess shouldbe counted among the many natural gifts bestowed by God upon His creation. At thesame time supernatural healing in the animalworld should not be ruled out, as most devotedsaints have given indisputable testimonies tosuch healings. No less a person than JohnWesley, the founder of M ethodism, who was afirm believer in Divine healing, testifies in his3

Healing Raysjournal to the remarkable deliverance of hisfaithful horse. We have known cases whereGod in answer to prayer has healed the cattleof saintly farmers who have claimed the promisein the seventh chapter of Deuteronomy, believ-ing it to be one of those which are " yea andamen " in Christ.Wherefore it shall come to pass, ifye hearken to these judgments, andkeep and do them, that the Lord thyGod shall keep unto thee the covenantand the mercy which He sware untothy fathers. And He will love thee, and blessthee, and multiply thee : He will alsobless . . . the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in theland which He sware unto thy fathersto give thee. And the Lord will take away fromthee all sickness.Deut. vii. 12, 13, 15.When we come to consider the humancreation, we find that God in His love andmercy has provided the means of healing forall mankind, saints and sinners alike, by theoperation of a natural law which is inherent inthe human organism. Physicians and nursesthrough much study have become acquaintedwith this natural law of healing ; consequentlythey can intelligently assist nature to heal orre-assert itself. They minister in the realmof the natural, and it is the duty and privilegeof every Christian to pray for them in theirwork. We have come into contact with many4

Bodily H ealingwho belong to the noble medical profession, and have never met one who claimed to havepower to heal. The most they have assertedis that they possess the intelligence which enables them to assist nature to heal itself. Aneminent physician clearly shewed the trueposition when on one occasion, after beingcomplimented for his skill, he said, " I dressed.the wound, and God healed it."Doctorsand nurses only dispense the blessings whichGod has vouchsafed to mankindjust likethose people who, irrespective of their standing before God, are used to dispense otherblessings, such as the means of sustenanceamong the sons of men. How inconsistent aChristian would be if he spent much time inprayer for a good harvest and did not taketime to plough the field, sow the seed, waterthe ground, and assist in every legitimate waythe answer to his prayers. The natural lawof healing, like sunshine and rain, is anotherof the manifold gifts that are bestowed throughthe goodness of God upon godly and ungodlyalike, in order to lead men to repentance. He maketh His sun to rise on theevil and on the good, and sendeth rainon the just and on the unjust.Matt.v. 45.Or despisest thou the riches of Hisgoodness and forbearance and longsuffering ; not knowing that thegoodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?Rom. ii. 4.5

Healing RaysIt is a huge mistake on the part of manydevout believers in the truth of Divine Healing to ignore natural healing. Some earnestsaints have regarded the work of physiciansand nurses who minister in the natural realmas being distinctly evil or carnal. A few havegone so far as to disregard the essential lawsof hygiene, to ignore natural curative means, and even refuse the absolute necessities of thebody, in case they should manifest unbeliefand dishonour God. Such indiscretion hashindered many from taking a stand for thetruth, and often resulted in the work of Godbeing brought into disrepute. It is mostnecessary that the truth of bodily healingshould be viewed from the right perspective, and that its presentation be sane, sound, andbalanced.Let not then your goodspoken of.Rom. xiv. 16.beevilHEALING IN TWO REALMS : THESUPERNATURAL.Bodily healing in the supernatural realm isclearly taught throughout the whole range ofScripture. The Christian Church right downthrough the centuries has emphasised the truththat the Bible is the Word of God, that itscommandments should be implicitly obeyed, andits promises believingly appropriated. Whythen should it be a cause for wonderment ifthousands, having believed its teadhing, can6

Bodily H ealingtestify to miracles and healings ? Cases thatare incurable in the natural realm have beenhealed in the supernatural. The Gospel narrative of the woman with the issue of bloodreveals that she was beyond the aid of physicians. She had persistently sought healingalong natural lines, even to the extent ofspending all her living in vain. After muchdisappointment she summoned every effort, overcame every difficulty, gathered all remaining strength, made contact with a Physicianof a higher realm, and was made perfectlywhole. And a woman having an issue ofblood twelve years, which had spentallherlivinguponphysicians, neither could be healed of any,Came behind Him, and touchedthe border of His garment : and immediatelyherissueofbloodstanched.Luke viii. 43, 44.HIGHER AND LOWER CRITICS.Those who claim to believe in the miraculousin our day are confronted with two kinds ofcritics, the higher and the other, which we feeljustified in designating the lower. The higher critic is one who from an intellectual standpoint rejects the working ofmiraclesthe highbrow who maintains therig'ht to pick and choose the portions in theBible which in his judgment are inspired. He7

Healing Raysdoes not allow his mind to accept anything thatcannot be explained within the range of reason. The lower critic is the one who unreservedlyaccepts the Bible as the inspired Word of God,but who endeavours to shew from its pagesthat we are not living in the days of miracles. If he cannot succeed in proving that the miraculous was withdrawn at the end of the apostolicdays, he attempts to postpone the supernaturalelement to a future millennium. Of the twokinds of critics we must confess that the higheris far more consistent than the lower. Theformer commences by making it perfectly clearthat while he believes the Bible contains theWord of God, he does not believe the wholeBible to be inspired. Therefore he is notinconsistent with the stand he takes wheneliminating the miraculous from the Bible.Let us say though, in passing, that if he professes to be a minister of the Gospel, he ismost inconsistent with his calling in denyingthe inspiration of any part of the Book. Butthe lower critic is most inconsistent with hisown standpoint, and indeed presents a pitiablesight. He starts off by declaring his absolutefaith in a present-day miraculous Bible with allits commands and its promises, and then arguesthat miracles are not for the present. His un-reasonable attitude often proves the sayingattributed to Spurgeon to be only too true" The Gospel suffers more from its exponentsthan its opponents." How one can claim to

Bodily H ealingbe evangelical and fundamental, and at the sametime deny the miraculous, is more than puzzlingto us. While professing to believe in a supernatural religion, he is all the time underminingits foundation. Why ! belief in the great truths of the newbirth and the second advent of Christ, whichmost Christians hold, virtually implies belief inthe supernatural. It is impossible to accountfor the experience of regeneration apart froma miracle. This was the first lesson thatNicodemus had to learn from the Master Himself. In response to his question, " How cana man be born when he is old ? " our Lordgave him that all-important object lesson of thewind. What is it that happens at regeneration ?The sinner receives pardon for all his sins, heis definitely justified, and God commences todeal with him as though he had never sinned. The Spirit of Christ comes into his heart crying, " Abba, Father," and the regenerated oneis a partaker of the Creator's nature. Divinenature is here blended with that of the sons ofmena mystery of mysteries, the creation ofthe Holy Ghost. How useless it is to try toaccount for the new birth apart from the supernatural. Then again, what a glorious hope thesecond advent of Christ is ! Christians every-where are longing for His return. We maintain that to believe in the second advent ofChrist, and all that it entails, means believing

Healing Raysin a tremendous demonstration with supernatural effects. For the Lord Himself shalldes-cend from heaven with a shout, withthe voice of the archangel, and withthe trump of God : and the dead inChrist shall rise first :Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up togetherwith them in the clouds, to meet theLord in the air : and so shall we everbewith16, 17.the Lord.I.Thess.iv.At a certain convention we were privilegedto listen to a great student of Second Adventtruth preaching on his favourite theme. In hisaddress he graphically described the resurrectionof the dead saints, the translation oflivingsaints, the broken law of gravitation, and manyother remarkable happenings at the coming ofChrist. Some time afterwards we had occasionto compare notes, and in the midst of our conversation he most emphatically declared thatthe days of miracles were past. " This," hesaid, " is an age of faith, without signs of anykind." It is unnecessary to say that we reminded him of the teaching he had given inhis address, and how faithfully yet unknowinglyhe declared that he believed in miracles in thisage. The second coming of Christ is to be theclosing act in the great dispensation of the HolyGhost. His coming will bring to a conclusionthe most miraculous dispensation in the wholeof God's dealings with mankind.10

CHAPTER IISome Effects of the First Adam's DisobedienceThefirstwas made a livingI. Corinthians xv. 45.Adamsoul.The first man is of the earth earthy.I. Cor. xv. 47. .Rom. v. 19.N order to get the right perspective for theteaching of scriptural healing it would bewell for us to consider the indisputableteaching of Scripture concerning the originalcondition of man, the fall of Adam, and itsFor as by one man's disobedience.Ieffects upon mankind and creation ; also con-cerning the Saviour of mankind and therestoration of creation.THE ORIGINAL CONDITION OF MAN, THEFIRST ADAM.Adam, endued with splendid intellectualpowers, was created in the image and likenessof God. He was invested with power andauthority in three realms, on earth, on the sea,and in the air. He lived in a creation of exceeding beauty, and communed with hisCreator in a state of absolute innocency. God'stestimony to the work of His own hands isdeclared in the following verse :God saw everything that He hadmade, and, behold, it was very good,Gen. I. 31.

Healing Ray sTHE FALL OF MAN AND ITS EFFECT UPONCREATION.Adam, tempted by the Devil, fell by transgression from that state of innocency, and thewhole creation, including the human family, theanimal world, and the material earth, hassuffered in consequence of that fall, accordingto the following scripture :For we know that the wholecreation groaneth and travaileth inpain together until now.Rom. viii.22.THE SAVIOUR OF MANKIND AND THERESTORATION OF CREATION.The Saviour of fallen humanity is the LordJesus Christ, the second Person in the Trinity, who, clothed with human nature, came intothis world to destroy the works of the Devil,to save mankind by His atoning death on thecross, and to make it possible for the sufferingcreation to be delivered, according to the following scriptures :Forasmuch then as the children arepartakers of flesh and blood, He alsoHimself likewise took part of thethat through death He mightdestroy him that had the power ofdeath, that is, the devil.Heb. ii. 14.Once in the end of the world hathHe appeared to put away sin by thesacrifice of Himself,Heb. ix. 26.For this purpose the Son of Godsame ;12

Some Effects of First Adam's Disobediencewas manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.I. Johniii. 8.And He that sat upon the thronesaid, Behold, I make all things new. .Rev. xxi. 5.Let us now tabulate some of the definiteresults of the first Adam's disobedience, andthen consider some of the benefits of the last.Adam's obedience upon the whole of creation.SIN." All have sinned."In these words theBible confirms the total moral depravity of thehuman race. Scripture likens all to sheep thathave gone astray. It includes all under condemnation. It charges all with transgressionand makes no difference, for all have sinned.Only one Man ever trod this earth who couldrightly claim to be the exception, and he wasthe Man Christ Jesus, for He " knew no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth." Amidthe wreck of fallen humanity He stands out asthe only One vvho actually condemned sin inthe flesh, and by virtue of His triumph He isthe able Saviour of mankind. The condition of all others is most truthfullyand accuratelyscriptures :depictedinthefollowingThe Lord looked down from heavenupon the children of men, to see ifthere were any that did understand, and seek God.13

H eating RaysThey are all gone aside, they arealtogether become filthy : there isnone that doeth good, nu not one.Psalm xiv, 2, 3.All we like sheep have gone astray ;we have turned every one to his ownway ; and the Lord hath laid on Himthe iniquity of us all.Isaiah liii.6.shouldest markiniquities, 0 Lord, who shall stand? If Thou,Lord,Psalm cxxx.3.written, There is nonerighteous, no, not one.Rom. iii. 10.As it isFor all have sinned, and come shortof the glory of God.Rom. iii. 23,DEATH." Death by sin." In just these few wordsthe inspired Apostle explains the advent ofthis last enemy of mankind. Before sin therewere no death, no heartbreakings, no separationfrom loved ones, no funeral processions, nograveyards. Now graves are opened, thereare sorrowing ones, and acute separations fromthose loved most. The hands that onceministered to the needy are helpless, the eyesthat pitied the less fortunate are glazed, thefeet that went on errands of mercy walk thatway no more, the tongue of the eloquent isstilled in silence, the heart of the compassionateceases to beat ; all faculties fail, and the body, that organism so fearfully and wonderfullymade, is laid to rest amidst the ashes of earth.Legislators have made laws with fearful

Some Effects of First Adam's Disobediencepenalties, orators have delivered eloquent lectures on the maintenance of health, andscientists have put forth superhuman efforts inthe struggle of life, all with a view to postponing the operation of death. Still it rages witha fearful fury, and reigns in every nation fromthe northern to the southern poles, from theeastern to the western shores. It affects alikethe monarch and the subject, the peer and thepauper, the learned and the unlearned, thehigh and the low, the rich and the poor, inevery country under the canopy of heaven.Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death bysin ; and so death passed upon allmen, for that all have sinned.Rom.v. 12.The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.I. Cor. xv. 26,THE ANIMAL KINGDOM IN BONDAGE.Most people overlook the fact that theanimal kingdom is suffering in bondage as aresult of the first Adam's transgression. Yetthis is clearly taught in the Word of God. Allare prepared to admit that there is muchsuffering among animals, for it is impossible tolive in this world without coming into contactsometimes in the most acute form. The sensibilities of even the unemotional arewith it,at times wounded by the reports of cases whichare brought before magistrates for cruelty toanimals. The bondage of corruption, with all

Healing Raysthe suffering and pain that emanate from it, isthe direct result of the Fall. Creatures thatwere once docile and harmless suddenly becamewild and ferocious.Who could possiblyimagine beasts with savage and cruel instinctsroaming about within the confines of a blessedand tranquil Eden ? The animal creation fellwhen Adam fell, and ever since the groaningsof burdened creatures have fallen upon themost insensitive ears. Before the Fall Adam had dominion overeverything that moved upon the earth, and itwas not until he departed from his allegianceto his Maker that the animal creation becameinvolved. For the creature was made subjectto vanity, not willingly, but by reasonof Him who hath subjected the samein hope,Because the creature itself alsoshall be delivered from the bondageof corruption into the glorious libertyof the children of God.Rom. viii.20, 21.THE CURSE UPON THE EARTH.Thorns and thistles bear witness to the cursethat came upon the earth as a result of the firstAdam's disobedience. Through sin the groundwhich brought forth plentifully, tender grassand herb yielding seed after its kind, and treesladen with luscious fruits, came under thebondage of corruption, and the earth, which16

Some Efiects of First Adam's Disobediencewas to produce the means of sustenance for anever-ending life, suddenly became necessaryas a burial place for the dead. As a result ofthe curse mother earth is in bondage, and thevegetable kingdom labours increasinglytobring forth. This possibly explains why thewriter of the Epistle to the Hebrews declaredthat the earth would wax old as doth a garment. To meet the present needs mankind has toresort to using chemicals for the purpose offorcing production. The mighty energies ofnature are being held in check, and the earth, labouring under the curse, cannot possiblyproduce as it could in the Eden state. Thesweat that breaks out on the husbandman'sbrow as he tills the land, and the sorrow withwhich he eats of its produce, bear witness withthe thorn and the thistle to the perpetuity ofthe curse.Cursed is the ground for thyin sorrow shalt thou eat of itall the days of thy life ;Thorns also and thistles shall itbring forth to thee ; and thou shalteat the herb of the field ;In the sweat of thy face shalt thoueat bread, till thou return unto the.sake ;ground ; for out of it wast thou taken :for dust thou art, and unto dust shaltthou return.Gen. iii. 17, 18, 19.MORTALITY.Mortality, which means " subject to death,"is the portion of sinner and believer alike, right17

Healing Raysfrom the womb to the grave. It is a term thatbelongs to the living, and not to the unbornor dead. There is a beginning and end inmortality, proved beyond the shadow of doubtby the span of life that is allotted to mankindin general. Mortality confirms the teaching ofScripture concerning fallen human nature, or,in other words, physical depravity. The factthat no member of the human family, whethersaint or sinner, is immune from sickness, disease, and decay, proves that all suffer fromthe limitations of fallen human nature. It isone of the results of the first Adam's disobedience, one of the many that quickly followed in the trail of sin. The believer deliveredfrom the chains of sinmoral depravitythrough the blood of Christ, still has to contendwith the weaknesses of physical depravity. Heis confined to a body which groans, earnestlydesiring for the day to come when mortalityshall b.e swallowed up of life.Nevertheless deathreignedfromAdam to Moses, even over them thathad not sinned after the similitudeof Adam's transgression, who is thefigure of Him that was to come.Rorn. v. 14.Becausethecreature itself alsoshall be delivered from the bondageof corruption into the glorious libertyof the children of God.For we know that the wholecreation groaneth and travaileth inpain together until now,IS

Some Effects of First Adam's DisobedienceAnd not only they, but ourselvesalso, which have the firstfruits of theSpirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption,to wit, the redemption of our body.Rom. viii. 21, 22, 23.SICKNESS AND DISEASE.Although there is no definite scripture toshew that sickness and disease came into thisworld as a result of the first Adam's dis-obedience, it is only reasonable to deduce thisfrom certain scriptures which we shall considerin our fourth chapter. Before sin there was no death ; and if therewas no death, there was no physical depravity ;and if there was no physical depravity, therecould have been no sickness and disease. Thebreaking of God's moral law entails sufferingfrom such diseases as are catalogued in thetwenty-eighth chapter of Deuteronomy. Theworld suffering from the effects of the Fall hasbecome the stage for a drama of woe. Thesmitten, the bound, the oppressed, the bruised, the broken, the maimed, the lame, the blind, the dumb, the deaf, all in a seeming endlessprocession play their part, and pass on to theaccompaniment of the dirge of sighs and groansof distress. From the dust of each succeeding generation arises another to carry on andsuffer. The wail of anguish is not stifled in thethroes of death before it is heard re-echoing19

Healing Raysalong the ranks of those who follow in theirtrail. The scenery behind the moving massof frail humanity depicts the prison, the hospital, the asylum, the charnel house, and thegraveyard. Here we have the wan cheek, theimbecile child, the languid look, the lustrelesseye, the frail frame, the infant feebleness, thepreying plague, and the devouring cancer.Waves of sorrow as mountains high pass overthe earth with its expansive seas of sickness, and its battlefields sodden with the blood ofyouth. Violence and cruelty, murder, andoppression stalk through the land amidst thebruised and the broken, until the whole worldseems sick and ready to die.Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death bysin ; and so death passed upon allmen, for that all have sinned.Rom.v. 12.Fools because of their transgres-sion, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.Psalm cvii. 17.20
