7Unfortunately, the vaccinations will not bring an immediate end to Covid-19. They are a step along the wayto protecting us and the spread of the virus. Even after vaccination, we will need to continue to takeprecautions and follow the CDC safety guidelines. Continue to social distance, wear a mask, and avoidcrowds. It’s a little complicated. for you to do things like visit the grocery store or the post officeif you work in a place that leaves you highly exposed, your risk of getting Covid-19 will be greatlyreduced, orif you and the people you want to see are all vaccinated, it should be safer to socialize with them, including indoors.Early evidence suggests that the first vaccines in the U.S. reduce people’s risk of developingCovid-19 by around 95 percent, that still means a small percentage of people could still getsick, and as long as the virus is as widespread as it is now, even that small percentage could bea very large number of people, so don’t expose yourself unnecessarily.According to the CDC, it is not yet know if vaccinated people can transmit the virus if theybecome infected but don’t show symptoms. Early data on transmission seems promising, butvaccines are very unlikely to curb contagiousness entirely.Already, three variants have emerged that, in different ways, present challenges for the U.S.The B.1.1.7 variant, which was first seen in the United Kingdom, is more transmissible thanearlier forms of the virus, and, research increasingly indicates, more lethal. Then there are P.1and B.1.351, which were first seen in Brazil and South Africa, respectively. They appear to bebetter at reinfecting people who’ve recovered from an initial bout of Covid-19. Some vaccineshave also been found to be less effective against B.1.351, and given that it shares some of itsmutations with P.1., experts fear the same could be true with the latter. We will have to waitand see. The UK variant accounts for about 5% of all Covid-19 in the US now and someexperts predict it could be the dominant strain in the US by mid March.Vaccinated people should still follow CDC safety guidelines: wear masks in public and avoid largegroups and indoor gatherings when possible. If you and the people you want to see are all vaccinated and following CDC guidelines, it should besomewhat safer to socialize with them, including indoors, experts say, but being in large groups ortraveling, when there’s no way to know if the people around you have been vaccinated, will remainrisky.Family members and friends will be vaccinated at different times. Socializing before everyone in thegroup is vaccinated is a harder question, experts say. It would be safer than it is now, but spread ispossible before everyone has immunity, and people will still need to consider the small chance ofinfecting someone who is at high risk.It should be much safer to move around any community once it has achieved herd immunity — thepoint when the virus can’t easily spread because enough people have become vaccinated or havealready had the illness. Many scientists think at least 70 percent of people need to have acquiredimmunity for the whole community to be protected (herd immunity). That number is just an estimate, though, and might need to be revised once more is known about how vaccines affect the virus’sability to spread.Ref: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/21/u.e articleShare,

9by Nanci WinterhalterMy Aunt Pat had 8 children in 20 years. Nothing seemed to rattle her. When oneof her clan was feeling unwell, after establishing that there was nothing broken orpossibly fatal, she gave her customary advice: “drink some water, take a nap, go to thebathroom” and we will talk again afterwards. At the time we thought that was unusual. Now we think she may have been onto something. When it works well, digestion is a miracle. As my teacher said, “digestion turns whatisn’t us, into us”, and then eliminates what we don’t need. Wow! When working well, our digestive system nourishes AND cleanses us.How and what we eat can be one of the prime contributors to poor health (individually and collectively). Italso holds the potential of restoring balance within us and laying the foundation for improved well being. And, of course eating can be one of the simple pleasures of life. So, let’s think about nourishing ourawesome vessel.First, we gather information. Consider keeping a “diary” of what and how you eat and drink for 3 or 4“routine” days. Refrain from judging, just jot. Seek the whole truth about yourself, including your habits. When you review your diary, do it as you might do with a great friend - with kindness but honesty. What doyou notice? This very action alone cultivates a new awareness. Awareness can lead to valuable insights. With your new found self-knowledge, consider your shopping routines in order to gather foods which aremore wholesome, more natural and more sustaining. Maybe, limit shopping to mostly the perimeter aisles ofthe grocer. Visits to your local farmer’s markets and farm stands may be in order. Choose organics whenavailable, local products whenever possible (so fruits and veggies are in season), foods closer to the earth asopposed to processed and whose ingredient list is very short and recognizable. Changing eating habits canbe a challenge and takes time. But, over time you will learn more about yourself and your nutritional needsand will reap the benefits.Consider making mindfulness a part of every meal! It helps you focus on the sensations of eating to furtherenjoy the experience. Notice more about your food - color, shape, texture, smell and subtle flavors. Whenyou note the familiar scent of something you love to eat upon entering a home, or even see or imagine it, youstart to salivate just thinking about it. The digestive process has already begun! When you actually sit to eat and place food into your mouth, your teeth start chomping, your spit startsmoistening things and enzymes in your saliva start breaking down your food before it even leaves the mouth! So, take your time. Chewing breaks down your food so it loses texture. You may find this enhances yourexperience of eating by bringing an ease to your swallow and can reduce indigestion which can accompanyeating too fast. You tend to eat less as your gut has time to send “getting satisfied” signals to preventovereating. Consider this Confusian inspired term - Hara Hachi Bu - and stop eating when your stomach is80% full. That’s what you might call food for thought! Now, about alignment. the position and posture you adopt while eating and drinking affects your digestiveprocess. Your goal is for a neutral, upright spine position with your head stacked over your spine. Bringyour seat quite close to the table. Let your feet rest firmly on the earth. Sitting up straight at the table relievesback and neck tension and brings your “pipes” in line for smooth flow of food down the digestive tract afterchewing. Upright posture also eases our breathing - which is always desirable, especially when eating!Bringing your food to your mouth rather than bringing your mouth to your food helps you maintain thisupright position. And, you look so civilized! Here’s an idea taken out of my Italian ancestors’ playbook. Consider an after meal Passegiata - a pleasant“digestive stroll”. Reconnect with yourself and enjoy this simple aid to digestion. Buona giornata, parliItaliano? As we know, water is essential for life and for good health and drinking water during or after a meal actuallyaids digestion. Water helps break down food so your body can absorb the nutrients. By softening our stool, continued

In Support of Digestion, continued from page 911water can help prevent constipation. Advice from the Ayurvedic tradition (and my Nana) is to drink a glass ofroom temperature water first thing in the morning to help “flush” the system. This can stimulate themovement of food through the digestive tract, thereby helping us develop regular bowel movements. Morethan 1/2 of our body weight is water! Maintaining the correct balance of water is essential for keeping all ofour cells healthy. Hydration affects all the systems of our body. Even mild dehydration can adversely affectour cognitive status, short term memory, mood, concentration and more. And, let’s not forget that a large partof muscle composition is water, so muscles function better and are less injury prone when well hydrated! Iget thirsty just thinking about it!Now that your interest is piqued - you might want to explore more specific information regarding healthydietary approaches. The recent Harvard Women’s Health Watch Newsletter advised considering dietaryapproaches such as The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and the Mediterranean diet. Thereis evidence that both approaches help heart AND brain health. Who doesn’t need some of that?In closing, be honest with yourself and be patient but persistent.
