What is IMU’sDentistry ProgrammeAbout?Patient-centredoral care.OVERVIEWThe Dentistry programme provides a choice of 2 tracks for students. The firsttrack is implemented jointly by the International Medical University (IMU), incollaboration with English-speaking overseas partner universities, with studentsspending the first phase in Malaysia and the later years at one of our partneruniversities. On successful completion, the students will receive the degree fromthe respective partner university. The second track is for students to spend theentire 5 years of the undergraduate programme in IMU and receive the Bachelorof Dental Surgery (BDS) degree from IMU.The BDS programme has a revised curriculumapproved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency(MQA) to produce work-ready dentists of thefuture. The programme provides an invigoratingand stimulating learning environment using awide assortment of learning approaches andearly clinical experience. Interactive plenaries,team-based integrated learning (TBIL),workshops, peer assisted learning, student groupdental practice, asynchronous and synchronousonline learning, hospital postings, supervised andIndependent on-demand simulation sessions are someof the approaches to provide authentic, integratedand personalised learning. Personalisation of thelearning path through excellent mentor supportdevelops learners into independent, resilient, caringand compassionate dentists. Degrees fromthe Partner Dental School (PDS) are recognised internationallyand locally by the Malaysian Dental Council for full registration.Graduates from the IMU’s Dentistry programme are working inthe Ministry of Health, Malaysia to complete their 1-yearcompulsory service. They can then discuss their progresswith their personal mentors who will assist them to plan theirprogress and take appropriate remedial actions to get backon track where deemed necessary.CAREER PATHWAYDentistry is a professional career dedicated to the evaluation,diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases, disorders andconditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area (upper andlower jaws), associated structures next to these areasand their impact on the human body. Learn from OurExperienced LecturersPROF SEOW LIANG LINBDS (Malaya), MSc (London),FDSRCS (England), PhD (Malaya)Prof Seow Liang Lin is currently the Dean for the School ofDentistry at IMU and has previously served in University ofMalaya for ten years. She is actively involved in research andhas won numerous awards at international arena. She is theFounding President of Malaysian Association forProsthodontics and currently the President of AsianAcademy of Prosthodontics.PROF KHOO SUAN PHAIKBDS (Mal), MSc (Lond),Cert Immunol (Lond),FFDRCSI (Oral Med), PhD (Spore)Prof Khoo Suan Phaik is a specialist in the field of Oral Pathology and OralMedicine. Prior to joining IMU in 2008 she had served at the University ofMalaya for 20 years before joining as one of the pioneers setting up theSchool of Dentistry at IMU. She was Associate Dean for the School ofDentistry for 4 years before taking the role of Associate Dean forCommunity Engagement at the university level from 2018. She haspublished widely and is an invited speaker in various local and internationalconferences with research interests in oral mucosal diseases and orofacialpain. She is a member of the MQA Panel of Assessors for DentalSpecialists, Head of DentSEdC Oral Pathology/Oral Medicine Committeeunder the Conjoint Technical Committee for the Evaluation of SpecialistDental Program (JTBPPKP) and a member of the Professional QualifyingExamination (PQE) Committee. She was the President of the InternationalAssociation for Dental Research (Malaysian Section).PROF TOH CHOOI GAITBDS Hons (Spore),MSc (Lond), FDSRCPS (Glasgow),DRDRCS (Edinburgh), FDSRCS (Edinburgh),FAMM (Mal)Prof Toh Chooi Gait was the Founding Dean of the School andcurrently the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Engagement and IndustrialPartnerships. Prior to joining the IMU, she was a professor inthe Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya and had servedin various capacities including Deputy Dean and Head ofDepartment of Conservative Dentistry. She is a member of theeditorial boards of Operative Dentistry, the European Journal forDental Education and had served as a reviewer for other localand regional journals including Malaysian Dental Journal andAsian Journal of Aesthetic Dentistry. She is a member of variousgovernmental technical committees including Chairman of theProtem Examination Committee for the Professional QualifyingExamination of the Malaysian Dental Council, Joint TechnicalCommittee for the Evaluation of Dental Specialist Committeeof the Malaysian Qualification Agency, Malaysian Dental DeansCouncil, and Specialist Sub-Committee on Restorative Dentistry.

What OurStudents and Alumni SayI was part of the pioneer batch in year 2008 and if one is to compare the times backthen and now, many things have changed. The School of Dentistry has grown andmatured with a strong team of educationists, clinicians and researchers byproducing well sought after dental practitioners, treating high-volume of patients inour state of the art Oral Health Centre and publishing high impact publicationsannually. I am grateful to be given the opportunity to be part of the faculty underthe IMU scholarship programme as the opportunities to learn and grow are limitlessat IMU.IMU School of Dentistry did an excellent job in providing a conduciveenvironment for maximum learning experience.
