Dean’s MESSAGEAdministrative TEAMFifty years ago, in 1964, the UCLA School of Dentistry opened its doors to the first DDS class, marking thebeginning of our legacy of excellence. I am astounded by the progress we have made over the decades, and I amconfident that we have accomplished the vision that the University of California had when they set out to build aworld-class dental school on the UCLA campus.During the 2014-2015 fiscal year, a series of events and symposiums will be held to commemorate our 50thAnniversary. A celebratory gala will take place in May of 2015 that will bring together up to 500 academic andcommunity leaders, faculty, alumni, and students in Los Angeles. I hope that everyone will join us in the year-longfestivities to observe this significant milestone.Falling at the same time as the dental school’s 50th Anniversary milestone is the launch of The CentennialCampaign for UCLA. The 5-year campaign kicked-off in May 2014 and will continue through UCLA’s 100th anniversaryin 2019. The passing of 100 years marks a historic moment here on campus and we invite the entire community tocelebrate with us as we look to the future of UCLA and the UCLA School of Dentistry.Following our curricular reform process in recent years, the School of Dentistry was tasked with restructuring ouracademic divisions and sections. A specially appointed committee was charged with reviewing and recommendinga new structure. After numerous discussions and evaluations, the committee endorsed potential changes, whichwould be effective at the start of the 2014-2015 fiscal year. Based on the committees’ recommendation, the creationof two new divisions was announced, the Division of Constitutive and Regenerative Sciences, encompassing theSections of Endodontics, Periodontics, and Restorative Dentistry, and the Division of Growth and Development, encompassing the Sections of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. Additionally, fixed prosthodontics curriculumwas moved from the Section of Restorative Dentistry to the Division of Advanced Prosthodontics to better alignsimilar disciplines. These changes are reflected in the faculty recognition section in the back of this report. We have continued to improve in all areas while also fulfilling our mission of improving the oral and systemichealth of the people of California, the nation, and the world through education, research, patient care, and publicservice. I am pleased to highlight our achievements briefly below and in-depth throughout this report.Training future leaders in the dental community. At the 47th Commencement Ceremony that was held on June 1st,we conferred 106 DDS and 19 oral biology MS and PhD degrees, and awarded 51 advanced training certificates. Thiscommencement was especially significant. One of our very own alumni was honored with the UCLA Medal – theuniversity’s highest honor. Dr. Gary Parker, UCLA DDS ’77, was presented with the medal by UCLA Chancellor GeneBlock. A full article can be found on page 56 about Dr. Parker and the UCLA Medal. Dr. Parker is just one alumnuswho has made an impact on the dental field and beyond. Many leaders in dental research, advocacy, and academiaare graduates of the School of Dentistry. There is no question that our alumni will continue to be recognized as thepioneers, the innovators, and the trailblazers in the oral healthcare community.No-Hee Park, DMD, PhDDean & Distinguished ProfessorNeal Garrett, MA, PhDAssociate Dean, Education & Faculty DevelopmentCun-Yu Wang, DDS, PhDAssociate Dean, Graduate StudiesCarol Bibb, PhD, DDS ‘78Associate Dean, Student AffairsEdmond Hewlett, DDS ‘80Associate Dean, Outreach & DiversityDavid Wong, DMD, DMScAssociate Dean, ResearchPaulo Camargo, DDS, MS ‘91, MBA ‘07, FACDAssociate Dean, Clinical Dental SciencesRonald Mito, DDS ‘76, FDS, RCSEdAssociate Dean, Academic Programs & PersonnelTara Aghaloo, DDS, MD ‘98, PhD ‘07Assistant Dean, Clinical Research1UCLA School of Dentistry

Out of a pool of nearly 1,800 applications, we welcomed 88 new pre-doctoral studentsto the dental school last September. The students, who make up the Class of 2017, comefrom some of the top colleges and universities in the country. We look forward towitnessing the many successes that will surely come from this bright and talented groupof future leaders in the dental community.Groundbreaking research to improve human health. Our research endeavors continue tobreak school records. In the 2013-2014 fiscal year, a staggering 26.28 million wasreceived in research funding, eclipsing past fiscal years. Additionally, 19 million in newresearch funding was awarded. Many of our research faculty appeared in top researchjournals, including Dr. Dean Ho’s work on the therapeutic benefits of nanodiamonds inScience Translational Medicine, and Dr. Cun-Yu Wang’s work on head and neck cancers inScience Signaling. Dr. Wang was also elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering –one of the most prestigious and exclusive engineering and medical academies in Asia. One of the awards of particular significance was a nearly 4 million research grantthat Dr. David Wong received from the National Institutes of Health - Common Fund tostudy biological markers in saliva to attempt to develop a tool for detecting stomachcancer. Additional funding from NIH’s National Institute of Dental and CraniofacialResearch hit a three-year high at 7.5 million, supporting research that focused on thecauses of osteonecrosis of the jaw, oral cancer, and other oral-related diseases. A fullreport on the School’s research projects can be found on page 15.Commitment to quality patient care. Providing quality, affordable dental care to thelocal and regional community is a core value of the School of Dentistry. This passion wasreflected in the completion of the Section of Orthodontics’ Clinic Innovation Unit. Theproject introduced advanced technology to this specialty clinic, improving the quality oflife of adults and children who have complex craniofacial deformities. Plans to renovateseveral other specialized clinics are underway, furthering our commitment to providingthe best possible care to individuals with complicated cases. In addition to infrastructure improvements, the number of patient visits provided toour patient population hit approximately 140,000. The School of Dentistry also received a2-year contract from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for 2.36million, whose funding will provide dental care for more than 1,000 people who are HIV /AIDS each year. A full report on our patient care initiatives can be found on page 29.Serving the community by providing free dental care. In another push to improve theoral and systemic health of the community, the School of Dentistry partnered withWilshire Bank at the start of the fiscal year. The bank pledged 100,000 over a 5-yearperiod to the dental school to provide free oral health screenings and dental care to thecommunity. In addition to this partnership, the dental school maintained a busy scheduleparticipating in 47 health fairs across the southern California region. The number ofpeople who received free dental care jumped approximately 30 percent compared to thelast fiscal year.We also continued to make headway in our commitment to training opportunities forunderrepresented communities in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM) fields. One such example is our Pre-college Science Education program, whichhas been in existence for seven years. Year after year, the program has proven to besuccessful. Nearly 70 students have entered the program and almost every one has goneon to attend a top university. Today, the program is supported through special fundingfrom UCLA Chancellor Gene Block and the Office of the Dean. Another pipeline programthat has had long running success is our Post-Baccalaureate program. In its tenth yearof existence, the program assisted another two disadvantaged students successfullygain acceptance to dental school.Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to commend our faculty and staff, bright andtalented pre-doctoral students, residents and trainees, and supportive and loyal alumniand friends, on the achievements and accolades received in the 2013-2014 fiscal year. Were it not for the hard work, dedication, and talent of this community, the School ofDentistry would not have had such a successful year.I welcome you to learn more about the UCLA School of Dentistry in the pages of thisreport. AnEDUCATION OF EXCEPTIONAL VALUEThank you for the opportunity to share this annual update from the Office of StudentAffairs. In addition to information on our educational programs, the entering Classof 2017, and the future plans of the graduating Class of 2014, we have featuredthree heartwarming stories of how individual students have been inspired to takecommunity service to new levels of innovation and outreach. You will be amazedat the professionalism, collegiality, and creativity of our students working togetheras members of the award winning UCLA chapter of the American Student DentalAssociation (ASDA).The pre-doctoral DDS program continues its longstanding record of attractinga highly qualified and talented student body. The 88 students in the incoming Classof 2017 were selected from a pool of nearly 1,800 applicants on the basis of theirimpressive academic credentials, promise of professional service and leadership, and5UCLA School of Dentistrydiverse backgrounds. The diversity will be further enhanced when 20 foreign-traineddentists enter the Professional Program for International Dentists (PPID) and join thethird year class. The future plans of the Class of 2014 indicate that of the 106 graduates, 75 willcontinue their training in a variety of postgraduate programs spread across the country, and 31 will join the ranks of general dentists in private practice. Our educationalprograms are clearly preparing our graduates to meet the needs of the dental professionfor both general dentists and the full spectrum of specialists.Although the UCLA School of Dentistry is the least expensive dental school inCalifornia, dental education is costly, and we are very grateful for the scholarships, fellowships, and grants that help to reduce student indebtedness. I would like toacknowledge the generosity of the individuals and organizations that fund student
