Welcome to Christmas at Woodside 2016It is 25 years since the first Christmas at Woodside concert on 20 th December1991, shortly after the official opening of Woodside Hall, and it has become aregular event on the Hitchin Thespians calendar ever since.Over the 25 years ten Musical Directors have put Christmas at Woodsideprogrammes together to include some of their own favourite pieces andseasonally themed ideas but always using the original framework of audiencecarols, choir carols, solo pieces and readings. Our ten Musical Directors areEsther Woods, Justin Thomas, Roger Heath, John Edwards, Iain Rutherford,Robin White, Martyn Notley, Alan Childs, Angela Doughty and Charlie Wakely.A very wide range of music has been included over the years from classicalChristmas choral music, both modern and traditional, to 1980s chart toppingChristmas songs. For the choir there have been many challenges since 1991 – rhythmicallyalternative versions of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer and Jingle Bells come tomind and the never-to-be-forgotten learning to sing in Estonian to present atraditional carol from that country, but the challenges have all been conquered intrue Hitchin Thespians style, hopefully for the better enjoyment for ouraudiences. As most of the music and readings in the programme for Christmas at Woodside2016 have been sung or read in at least one of the concerts since 1991 we hopethat several of tonight’s items will be familiar to you.So sit back and enjoy Christmas at Woodside 2016; join us in singing theaudience carols and, while partaking of the traditional mince pies and mulledwine in the interval, we hope you will raise your glasses to the next 25 years ofChristmas at Woodside.

David WillcocksAway in a manger, no crib for a bed,The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.I love thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,And stay by my side until morning is nigh.Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stayClose by me for ever, and love me, I pray.Bless all the dear Children in thy tender care,And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there,Reading:ChristmasAudience:O Little Town of BethlehemShauna StoltzH Walford DaviesO little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie.Above thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go by.Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting light,The hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee tonight.O morning stars together proclaim thy holy birth,And praises sing to God the KingAnd peace to men on earth,For Christ is born of Mary and gathered all above,While mortals sleep,The angels keep their watch of wond'ring love.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given,So God imparts to human heartsThe blessings of his heav'n.No ear may hear his coming: but in this world of sin,Where meek souls will receive him, stillThe dear Christ enters in.O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us we pray,Cast out our sin and enter in,Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angelsThe great glad tidings tell,O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel.Reading:Signs of ChristmasChoir:Rejoice and Be Merry (extract)Edwin LeesCedric Thorpe DaviesINTERVALDuring which mulled wine and mince pies will be servedPart TwoAudience:Ding Dong!
