REVIEWSThe Aging Brain, Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your MindAUDIOBOOK - Timothy R. Jennings, MD. Find it in the e-library at fba.overdrive.comThe title caught my attention. I might need to read this book. Maybe it would help me understand what happenedto a member of my family. She was smart, talented, well-groomed, a college professor. Then she retired early ondisability due to health problems. Within a few years we saw changes in her personality, a more sedentary lifestyle, complaints of constant pain and inability to remember some things while believing other things that were not true.We are not aware of any family members who had dementia or Alzheimer’s. I pick up the book. The author is boardcertified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. The book is published in 2018 by BakerBooks, a Christian Publishing Company. There is one more thing to check: Is this book just the thoughts or ideas oropinions of the author or is the information he presents “Proven” as the title says? I look for footnotes in the back.Thirty pages of footnotes! Not thirty footnotes. Thirty pages of footnotes. As one of the reviews I read later indicated, this book “brings togethersolid, up-to-date scientific research from many sources.” I am hopeful.about:Within the 245 pages, Dr. Timothy Jennings has set out to give his readers as much information as possible on: the science of the brain (genes, neurons, neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques - don’t get lost or give up trying to understand all thescientific explanations - keep reading)affects our brains.brains how “oxidative stress” (caused by obesity, sugar, tobacco, and alcohol) guiltandand the influences of our lifestyle choices on aging (theunforgiveness, a healthy belief system based on faith in a loving God, and an acceptance of our mortality.) the final part of the book is titled “Pathological Aging” where he describes dementia as “not normal.
