7 Habits of Highly Effective Publicists1. Responsiveness:Whether it's responding to a media query, a client who needs to change a meetingtime, or a boss looking for some quick research, successful publicists areincredibly responsive. Sure, this means that publicist's smartphone is basically hermost prized possession, but responsiveness indicates dependability. When you havea reputation for being dependable, everyone wants to work with you.Challenge: For the next week, any email you can respond to (or tend to) in 2minutes or less, respond to or deal with right away. Star anything else for laterand aim for a 24-hour turn around.2. Strong Boundaries:Of course, being responsive doesn't mean saying yes to every situation and drivingyourself nuts. While much of a publicist's job is about saying yes - to clients, tomedia, to partnerships and new ideas, truly powerful publicists know the immensevalue of a well-placed no. The trick is to say no (to that client demand, terrible ideaor media request) in a way that leaves everyone feeling respected, understood andgrateful. This often means responding with a well-timed, impeccablycommunicated alternative option.PRISM 7 HABITS, 7 CHALLENGES

Challenge: Say no to something you don't want to do this week. Figure out away to say no that feels good to you while making the other person feel goodtoo.3. Creativity:It can be easy to follow the standard - plan, pitch, follow up for coverage, pitchsomething else - strategy, but publicists who become valued company partners arealways thinking of new ways to land clients in the news or build buzz. From uniquecollaborations to emerging social media platforms and unexpected storylines, apublicist must be relentlessly creative and willing to pitch big ideas in order tostand out.Challenge: Take a look at what your favorite designer or brand is doing onsocial media. Identify 3 ways they could be doing a better job.4. Connection:In addition to putting people at ease and quickly building rapport, successfulpublicists love to bring people who should know one another together. about who you know, and who the people you know should know. When you areresponsible for introducing two strangers who go on to work together (and have agreat time doing so), you can bet your currency will go up.Challenge: Introduce two people in your network who should know oneanother, to one another! You can do this with a quick introductory email (besure to explain what they have in common or why they should meet) or use it asan excuse to throw a party!5. Generosity:Successful publicists are about the special extra touch. Birthday flowers, handwritten thank you notes always. Publicists who make others feel special, win.Beyond gifting, however, generosity in time, mentorship and going above andbeyond the call of duty (volunteering at a client's favorite charity 5k, running in therain to get a sample in my the deadline) can make such a profound difference.Challenge: Write a love letter. Pick someone you admire - it could be a teacher, blogger or friend and email them a quick note letting them know how much youappreciate them. Don't ask for anything in return, just send them a little love.6. Set Expectations:From educating clients on the PR process to making it a habit to understand whatprojects are priority, successful PR pros set expectations so that everyonePRISM 7 HABITS, 7 CHALLENGES

(themselves included) are know what's going on and what to expect. This easesstress levels, reduces overwork and keeps everyone on task.Challenge: The next time you're asked to do multiple things, ask which one isthe priority, and then aim to exceed expectations as you execute that first taskflawlessly.7. Curiosity:A natural inquisitiveness helps publicists to not only do the research to understanddifferent industries, emerging trends as well as company specifics, but to actuallyenjoy the process. A willingness to stay both humble and open to new ideas, technologies and change keeps communication professionals adept at navigating analways-changing media landscape.Challenge: Pick something you'd like to learn more about and then do it! Signup for a class, watch some youtube videos and simply do a bit of reading up onthe topic of interest.PRISM 7 HABITS, 7 CHALLENGES
