We mustrealize and recognize the diverse talents we have in our organization, and there is plenty. The world is changing, and we must embrace that change to keep current with trends andtechnology in order to retain to keep and recruit new members. In an effort to do this, wehave broadened our social responsibility commitment and scope of training around oralhealth. We all know that Oral Health is essential to Total Health and that the mouth is apart of the body; however, we must orchestrate the efforts of other health professionalsto assist our patients and communities in understanding this importance. We are changeagents and should be very proud of that fact. Continuing the path of transforming themindset of other health professionals and patients will increase our community’s overallhealth.Sharing our history is a must to continue our legacy; however, we must broaden our effortson how we share this information. It is with deepappreciation and gratitude that I thank my NDAA Board for all oftheir hard work. The Student National DentalAssociation is on the move, and isgearing up for the 2019 convention.Over the past semester, chapters aroundthe nation have participated in communityoutreach, had social events and even hosted regional meetings. Our Community outreach events are mainly oral health educationfocused and are geared towards many age groups. Along witheducation, our outreach events have also provided oral hygienesupplies to hundreds of participants. With our new program SNDAREACH, 4th year students were provided with the opportunity toconnect with SNDA chapters prior to Residency interviews. Aimingto bridge the gap with USNDA members, the USNDA committeehas just released a “How to get into Dental School” manual andis currently accepting applications for a 500 scholarship. Fallsemester set the momentum and Spring semester is surely offto a rolling start. Region 5 just hosted their first meeting, andRegions 7 and 3 have just set their dates, providing opportunitiesfor fellowship and collaboration across states and chapters. TheNational Executive Board is also working diligently to finalizedetails for National Convention. With sponsors, social events andexciting interactive sessions already planned, we are anticipating agreat experience in Washington D.C this July. Registration opensFebruary 1st so register now, as this is a conference you do not wantto miss!Student Dr. Mark AbereSNDA PresidentYours Truly,Angela Bowens, BA, MPANDAA PresidentDear NDHA, NDA Family and Affiliates,We the executive board of the NDHAappreciate the opportunity of joiningwith you in the planning and executionof the 2018 convention held at the family friendly RosenHotel in Orlando, Florida. Our follow-up evaluation of theconvention was very positive. This couldn’t have happened withoutcooperation and unity among the family members.NDA and NDHA have so much in common.Like NDA, NDHA remains the only dental hygiene stand-aloneorganization for under-represented minorities. We meet asan affiliate with the NDA and we plan and organize as interdependent organizations. We look forward to a continued strongcooperative relationship. Like NDA, NDHA organized because ofsociety’s culture of minority membership exclusion in the existingdental professional organizations. Like NDA, NDHA our effortsto reach out to majority university and community college dentalhygiene programs to identify African American students and bringthem into the NDHA has fallen mostly on deaf ears with a fewexceptions. Like NDA, NDHA members have diverse professionalbackgrounds from RDH all the way to PhD degrees and work invaried professional arenas. Their commitments to NDHA haveincluded using personal and professional resources to insuresustainability when academic and corporate America would not6100%Committed toHelping YourPractice Grow!We care about your practice. And, we have the solutionsto help you it us: ndaonline.org

Message from Family Organizationsoffer their support. There are national issues that are relevant tothe profession of dentistry that cannot be addressed individually. The issues require the collective efforts of all dental professionals. We all have a stake in the outcomes. And, only by workingtogether collectively can critical issues such as access to care anddisparity be resolved. As we prepare for our 57th Annual NDHAConvention at the Renaissance Washington DC Downtown Hotel, let us continue to come together in unity to do good work forour organizations, our professions, and our communities. Ourunity is our strength. In the words of Vesta M. Kelly, “Snowflakesare one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look what theycan do when they stick together.” Again, we thank you for theopportunity to serve, together.Sincerely,Barbara Purifoy-Seldon, RDH, MS, M.Ed,2017 - 2019 PresidentNational Dental Hygienists’ AssociationGreetings & Happy New Year ANDAMembers and Friends! We are looking forward to the NDA2019 convention to be held at theRenaissance Downtown in Washington,DC.
