Many of you arealready hard at work and I look forward to achieving muchwith you all this year. Secondly, I want to congratulate our2016 Achievement Medal Award recipient, Dean MichelAlfano. Together with the Meritorious Service recipient, LaurieGordon-Shaw and Certificate of Merit recipient Andrew Eder. We are all so proud of you.Secondly, I want to congratulate our 2016 award recipients: Dean MichelAlfano, Achievement Medal Award; Laurie Gordon-Shaw, Meritorious Service Award;And, Andrew Eder, Certificate of Merit. We are all so proud of you.Dean Amid Ismail, Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, will be receiving the 2017Achievement Medal Award in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 20th. It will be wonderful ifmany of you could attend this event.Please remember to join us at the European Meeting in Lyon from June 28th to July 2nd. TheHarbor Beach Marriott will be the host hotel for the AO Meeting from December 28th toJanuary 1st.There are lots of opportunities for us to meet up. These externships consist of ‘over the shoulder’ dentistry where studentscan watch all phases of dentistry in private dental offices and interact with Alpha Omegadentists to expand, enrich, and gain more knowledge in their dental careers.http://bit.ly/2017ExternshipFormEXTERNSHIP GUIDELINES Each externship city offers differentfeatures from year to year. It iscompletely up to the local alumnichapter that you are assigned, tostructure your externship, NOTInternational Alpha Omega or theExternship Chairperson. If there isa particular area of dentistry that youare interested in, you must make yourrequest when initially contacting thealumni member overseeing your externship program. You must make your own arrangements with regards to both travel andaccommodations. This is your responsibility, but in many cases, your hostsmay either provide you with a place tostay or help you to make other arrangements. In the past, for example, someexterns have contacted, if available,the student chapter in a nearby dentalschool for possible living arrangements.www.ao.orgThe program usually runs for twoweeks (and sometimes only one),but you are welcome to extend it atthe discretion of your hosts. Preference will be given to thosestudents who joined AO during theirfirst or second year of dental school andare active in their student chapters.Attendance at International meetingsis also highly encouraged for preferential city placement. The Alpha Omega Externship programis not affiliated with any University,Dental School, or Hospital. Studentsshould apply with the knowledge thattheir dental visits will be in privatepractices. A C T L O C A L LY – T H I N K G L O B A L LYALPHA OMEGA ILLINOIS ALUMNI CHAPTER2017 AO MIDWINTER DINNERThursday, February 23rdHONORINGFRED MARGOLIS, Z”LILLINOIS CHAPTERLAURIE GORDON-SHAWILLINOIS CHAPTERFred was a force in this world:a humble man whose mission inlife was to be kind and thoughtfulto others, advance the practiceof dentistry, and spread hisexperiences and knowledge to theentire dental community.Laurie was presented with the 2016 AlphaOmega Meritorious Service Award duringthe International Convention in SanFrancisco this past December. Lauriewas surrounded by family and friendswho were thrilled that she received AO’shighest honor devoted only to members.Fred loved the concept of family, and throughout his lifetime hewas devoted to many. Each was a little circle or community thatwas devoted to him and he to them. First and foremost was hisfamily; he often spoke with reverence of his love for his devotedwife, Susie, and their two wonderful children, David and Adam.In his office, he had the respect of his staff. We know of hisAlpha Omega family. Many times, he would mention howAlpha Omega affected his life. His motto was, “It’s not whatyou know, but who you know” and, from his involvement in AO,he made many life long friends.Full Tribute about red-margolis-z-lLaurie was first introduced to AO by Colin Shaw who then introducedher to his brother, David Shaw. Laurie and David later marriedand have raised two children, Jenna and Adam. While she has beenbuilding a thriving family practice in Blue Island for over 29 years,Laurie has always been deeply involved in her community. She hasbeen a major contributor to all the activities of the AO Illinois AlumniChapter, having chaired their programs, served as Chapter President ,and represented them at more than 30 AO International Conventions.She was also an active Member-at-Large with the AO U.S. Foundation.For the past two years, Laurie has been the Chicago Ambassadorfor the AO-Henry Schein Cares Holocaust Survivors Oral HealthProgram.
