President's MessageREALTORS do more than host open houses. We are community members. Welive, learn, work and worship in neighborhoods across greater Alabama — a fact wenever forget. That’s why the Birmingham Association of REALTORS is serious aboutuplifting those we serve. The National Association of REALTORS tells us to engage our community inmeaningful ways. We go above and beyond. As the Voice for Real Estate, we share our local market statistics, and we’ve been atthe ready when reporters tap us for interviews, trends and data. (See January-April 2017statistics, page 19.)BAR REALTORS are passionate givers who are involved and invested in our communities.Already this year, we’ve invested thousands of dollars in charitable causes. Our Bowlfor Kids’ Sake event raised 12,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Alabama, ourbiggest contribution yet! We were a key sponsor of the Alabama Kidney Foundation’sBirmingham Kidney Walk, and we’re a regular participant in Habitat for HumanityGreater Birmingham. We collaborate often. We partnered with the Alabama Center for Architecture tobring a Tiny House Exhibit and lecturer on “living small” to Birmingham. We invite localbusinesses — whose work connects with our industry — to join our association as Affiliate Members. Together we are able to accomplish more. (Read more inside about AffiliateMembers and our September Expo.)We’re also a voice for homeowners. In May, our leaders were on Capitol Hill, askinglegislators to support homeowners and consider our profession when addressing tax reform, the National Flood Insurance Program and sustainable homeownership. Here at home, we educated ourselves about the issues, interacting with such leaders as Jefferson County Commissioner David Carrington, Secretary of State John Merrill, Hoover Mayor Frank V. Brocato and the Jefferson County Mayors Association. Indowntown Montgomery, we rallied on REALTOR Day, and we successfully fought toprotect Alabama’s historic renovation tax credit program. It’s tough work, but we’re proud to do it.Living inspired,Faith Harper2017 PresidentBirmingham Association of Realtors President Faith Harper, RealtySouthVice President Kim Mangham-Barelare, LAH Real EstateTreasurer Gusty Gulas, BRIK RealtySecretary David Lucas, Lucas and AssociatesPast President Dot Mash, LAH Real EstateBoard of DirectorsTony Birk, Bo Draughon, Anna-Marie Ellison, Jerry Grant,Luciana Guin, Kathy Gipson, Kelli Gunnells,Senia Johnson, Keith Kelley, Anita Latham, Chuck Sparks,Chip Watts, Debbie White, Mechelle Wilder,Ginny Willis and Chris WoodBAR StaffChief Executive Officer Cliff LongVice President of MLS .Liz KendrickMLS Director Loren GilbertsonMLS Administrative Assistant . Thetwo local actors reminiscedrecently about their rolesin a zombie movie.join the Army and fight for my country.I was on my second tour of duty when Iwas injured in an IED attack. After beingunconscious for days, I woke up to learnthat I’d lost my left arm above the elbow,my left leg above the knee, my jaw waswired shut, and I had suffered severe injuries to my right leg and arm.It was devastating. I lost part of mybody and my career. After a long, darkstruggle with depression, I realized thatPhoto credit:Hal Yeagerthere was more to me than my injuresand what I’d lost. I had three children whoneeded their father, so I made a decisionto get healthy and be the man they neededme to be. It was a long road, but I made it.Before my injury, I was very much intophysical fitness. So I used that as a meansto pull myself out of that dark place andback to who I wanted to be. I started going to the gym and getting back in shape. It was a struggle because I had to learnnew ways to work out given the loss oftwo limbs. But I did it, and this eventuallyled to my participation in fitness competitions, mud runs, 5Ks, 10Ks and marathons. In 2014, I landed on the cover of Men’sHealth Magazine as their “Ultimate Guy.” Iwas the first veteran and amputee to gracethe cover of the world’s largest men’s magazine. I gained a lot of attention. I went onEllen (The Ellen DeGeneres Show) and fromthere on to Dancing with the Stars (ABC),followed by American Grit (FOX), as wellas several other talk and daytime shows.Last year I wrote a book about my life,Living with No Excuses, to share my storywith others to hopefully give those whoalso suffered from depression some hopethat there is a light at the end of the tunnel.Between being on television showsand writing my book, I travel the worldbirminghamrealtors.com REALTOR of Central Alabama12
