American manufacturingleads the world in innovation and long term outlook on business and social issues. U.S. manufacturers continue to make products at anincreasingly higher rate. Manufacturing leads other business sectors in defining how to do business in the rapidly shifting sands ofdomestic and international markets.A prime example of the responsible concern for both economic and social issues was most evident at the June 15 EHS sponsoredworkshop on Water Conservation. Over the years, FCMA manufacturers have led the way in protecting the environment. The WaterConservation workshop continued to build on the multiyear efforts by FCMA to be a good steward of the environment and to show howits success can be used to the greater good of each resident of Florida’s First Coast. The following examples illustrate this commitment:Professional Progress: For ten years, the development program has educated emerging managers of both manufacturing companies* and the environment regulators on the importance of understanding their local community, its issues and how to work together toprotect and preserve our quality of life.Industrial Pretreatment: Over three years, scientists and engineers from FCMA and regulators worked to develop standards that* advanced wastewater treatment. The result is a continuation of the improvement in water quality in the St. Johns River.TMDL: A multiyear effort guided by a stakeholder group representing all sides of the issue of water quality has developed one of the* best scientific models of a river in our nation. It is exemplary work and includes the best science that is available. FCMA memberswere instrumental in this positive outcome that insures continued improvement in the quality of the St. Johns River.Georgia-Pacific has a long demonstrated commitment to environmental protection that continues today. In the last five years, thecompany's Palatka mill has reduced groundwater use from 35 million gallons per day to less than 1 million. Achieved at great expense, this enormous reduction in water removal from the aquifer is the equivalent of the amount over 300,000 residents demand each dayfrom the same aquifer! It takes a lot of water to make paper. Georgia-Pacific’s shift from groundwater to surface water is a majorchange to protect our water supply for generations to come.Gerdau-Ameristeel has made a major commitment to water reuse. It recycles over 15 billion gallons per year and only uses 0.06%make-up water in its process. This is the equivalent of the water consumption of 120,000 homes per year. Not satisfied, Ameristeel isembarking on a 140 million expansion and modernization that will reduce its need for new water even more.7/15/2009 11:00 AM

View Newsletter2 of 8http://www.fcmaweb.com/tabid/87/Default.aspx?page Newsletter&IssueID 64These two examples together show the commitment of manufacturing to protecting the environment. We areshowing the way for all citizens to conserve this most valuable asset. To save water each day, the equivalent ofwhat over 750,000 First Coast residents use is a monumental statement to the good citizenship and long termcommitment of local manufacturers to protecting the environment.Let’s hope that society will recognize and use our expertise to maintain the First Coast’s quality of life. FCMAmembers will continue to lead in protecting the environment.Bahri Dental GroupSami Bahri, DDS, President8131 Baymeadows Circle West, Suite 102Jacksonville, FL 32256(904) 448-9669General Dentistry and OrhtodonticsGLE Associates, Inc.James E. Each day, itsJacksonville plant converts approximately 370 tons of recycled waste into finished wallboard. The gypsum used in the scrubber operationat the St. Johns Power Park to improve air quality is converted to wallboard for residential construction. More recently, it has workedwith JEA to increase its use of reclaimed water to lessen the impact on the aquifer and to reduce its waste water discharge. Thisdramatic increase in reclaimed water usage has contributed to a reduced discharge to the St. Johns River while reducing its JEA sewerbill by over 75%. This is another example of industry’s concern for protecting the environment being rewarded economically.7/15/2009 11:00 AM

The TMDL program is designed todetermine the acceptable pollutant load in the St. Johns River and then allocate that loadamong the many and varied users. FDEP, aided by the St. Johns River Water ManagementDistrict, has incorporated the very best science available in determining the TMDL for theriver. Paul Steinbrecher, JEA's Director of Permitting & Regulatory Conformance, has been atthe forefront of this effort for both FCMA and JEA. His rigorous insistence on using leadingedge scientific methods, ability to articulate difficult scientific processes into everyday terms, and his continuing willingness to seek reasoned solutions and build consensus among diversegroups, makes him the ideal representative to the community. His constant goal is thecontinued improvement in water quality that will benefit our children's children.Crane Awards - Recognize Your Outstanding Workers! The Crane Awards began ten years ago. It is designed to showcase our front lineemployees who are the foundation of our companies and the backbone of our community. The award is named for FCMA's founder and a true community and business leader, A.Crane Jones, executive vice president of CSX. Crane passed away several years ago, butthe Crane Award is a living testimony to the spirit embodied in your employees. OnSeptember 15 at UNF’s University Center, we will honor those special employees that youselect using criteria of your choosing. The evening is a highlight for recipients and for you,as their leader. The event is a red carpet affair and makes a highpoint in the life of eachrecipient. Interestingly, each usually says that he is only the representative of your entireworkforce and that the award could easily have been to anyone. This gives emphasis toanother benefit of the award, which is to pull your employees together. We urge you totake advantage of the opportunity to spotlight your outstanding employees.
