Historical NoteKilail which is sometimes spelt ‘Killail’ means Chapel(kil) and rocky outcrop (ail). Before Killail Farm existed,a chapel sat up on the rocky ground to the east of thehouse on the bend of the Kilail Burn.Otter Ferry as its name suggests, was founded around aformer ferry crossing which existed between there andPort Ann in Knapdale. The 1½ mile trip across Loch Fyneran between the late 1700’s and 1948.SituationKilail is situated in a very picturesque setting very close tothe eastern shore of Loch Fyne on the Cowal Penninsulabeside the hamlet of Otter Ferry.In the area known as the Argyll Secret Coast, Otter Ferryis a small community of scattered attractive fishermen’scottages and larger houses around the shore of LochFyne. A less than five minute walk from Kilail takes you tothe Oystercatcher Pub. This hidden gem forms the heartof the local community with bar and restaurant.
