STRATEGIC PLAN IMPLEMENTATION INVENTORY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTSAUGUST 2019

Dear Members of the UMBC Community,I am pleased to share this Inventory of Accomplishments related to implementation of UMBC’sstrategic plan. Organized around the goals and objectives under each of the four focus areasoutlined in Our UMBC: A Strategic Plan for Advancing Excellence and the priorities identifiedby the Foundations Work Group, this Inventory shows the progress we have made over the lastthree years and our priorities for the next two.As we enter the fourth year of implementation of our strategic plan, I hope you will join me incelebrating the substantial progress we have made so far and continuing our work to advanceour institutional mission.None of this would have been possible without your engagement, hard work, and commitment.Thank you for all that you do for Our UMBC.Philip J. Strategic Goal 2: Systematically improve the quality and consistency of academic advising and mentoring ofundergraduate and graduate students.Supporting Objectives2.1 Improve academicadvising and mentoring2016-2017 Formed Advising TaskForce to review the 2008Advising Work GroupReport and make newrecommendations withfocus on assessment,technology, and use ofanalytics. (Provost; EM) Developed Visual DegreeAudit (Degree Donut), anew advising tool that willmake it easier for studentsand faculty to quickly see ifstudents are on track tocomplete the requirementsfor their degrees andcertificates. UMBC was the only U.S.institution to be named afinalist for a PIEoneerAward in the category ofinternational studentsupport. Joined the AmericanCouncil on Education2018-2020InternationalizationLaboratory. Joined the MarylandInternational EducationConsortium (MIEC), aninitiative designed toadvance internationaleducation in the state of82018-2019 Nearly completedexpanding Interact - a pilotprogram designed todevelop basic listeningand interaction skills tohelp first year studentsnavigate culturally diversecontexts - to all first yearresidence halls. Strategic Goal 4: Continue to build a campus culture that creates, supports, and expects applied learning experiencesthat present a wide variety of options for all students (e.g., study abroad, internships, cooperative education, servicelearning, engaged scholarship, artistic performance, and teaching and graduate assistantships).Supporting Objectives4.1 Improve applied learningexperiences2016-20172017-2018 Posted nearly 8,500 joband intern opportunities ononline job board,UMBCworks, andcoordinated 697 employervisits, an increase of 9%from the previous year.(CC) Received a 1.3M grantfrom the Sloan Foundationto support studentsthrough scholarships,mentoring, researchexperiences, and entryinto Ph.D. programs inEconomics. (CAHSS) Enabled 6,500 studentsand alumni to participatein career counseling, oncampus interviews,internship placements,and career fair attendance(CC). Merged two extantApplied Learning WorkGroups and createdshared charge. (SA; UAA;Shriver) Surveyed the Class of2017 and found that 80%of 2017 graduates hadused Career Centerservices during their timeat UMBC. (CC) Surveyed 2016 graduatesand found that 84% ofstudents receivingundergraduate degreeshad engaged in appliedlearning opportunitieswhile at UMBC (CC). Created ongoing fund forsmall grants to studentorganizations thatpromote applied learningexperiences.
