New Start History The New Start Program was created in 1985. Over 17,500 students have gone through the program sinceits inception. KCC is the only CUNY college with a New Start program. Only students coming from a participating college canbe a New Start student at KCC.2

Eligibility RequirementsA student is eligible for admission to Kingsboroughthrough the New Start Program if he/she: has NOT attended Kingsborough previously (except in high schoolprograms such as College Now); is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (students on a temporary visaare not eligible); has a grade point average below 2.0 and/or has not passed theCUNY skills assessment tests within the required time at one of theparticipating senior colleges The participating senior college must be the last college the studentattended4

What is the New Start Program?Services and Benefits New Start students typically students do not have to sit outa semester after being academically dismissed from theirsenior college. They are admitted to KCC in good academic standing. Up to 30 previous college credits can be applied toward anassociate degree, with no prior grades carried over. KCC Nursing Department accepts transfer courses withgrades of only C or better.5

What is the New Start Program?Services and Benefits (cont.) NS students are offered one-on-one assistance withacademic advisement & registration, filing for readmissionto their prior college and/or transferring to a four-yearschool. Full-time KCC students can register for up to eight freecredits during winter and summer modules. NS students can attend KCC P/T or F/T, day, evening orweekend classes; whatever works best for the student.6

What is your plan while in the New StartProgram at Kingsborough? Do you want to be at KCC for at least 2 semesters to workon your GPA and return to your prior college? Do you want to be at KCC for at least 2 semesters to workon your GPA and apply to a different college? Do you want to graduate from KCC with an AssociateDegree?Knowing your plan is extremely important. Your planwill make the difference on how you are advised at KCC!7

Transferring Before Graduation Students who wish to transfer before graduating from KCCand want to return to their prior college, MUST applyand/or appeal for readmission to that college. Readmission to a students prior college is NOT dependenton their participation in the New Start program, nor is itguaranteed. Decision for readmission is made by the prior college. All colleges have their own readmission process, policy anddeadlines. You should meet with a NS Counselor if youwant to apply for readmission to your prior college.8

Transferring After Graduation Graduates of the New Start program are guaranteedadmission to at least one CUNY senior college(however it may not be the college of your choice). If you are a graduate from KCC with an A.A. or an A.S.degree, you will have at least 60 transferable credits. Graduates from the New Start program are able toapply to SUNY and Private colleges as well.9

Transfer CreditsOfficial Transcripts from all Previous CollegesAttended Must Be Received by the Registrar Officein order for an official credit evaluation to be done. Maximum transfer credits received is 30 creditsTransfer Credit given for equivalent coursework at KCCMust have a grade of D or better from CUNY schoolsMust have a grade of C or better from Non-CUNY schoolsTransfer Credit Evaluations Students will receive the official credit evaluation in the mailand will be able to discuss their transfer credits during theiradvisement and registration appointment. Sometimes courses may be pending until students havepassing scores on the placement exams and/or complete prerequisite requirements10

Transfer Credits (cont.) Biology and Behavioral Science courses taken TEN ormore years ago are not transferable to KCC. The Math and Computer Science Department does notaccept credits for courses that were taken EIGHT ormore years ago.11

Testing and ExemptionsStudents will receive an Exemption for theReading and Writing Test if they have: An SAT, ACT and/or Regents exemption Passing scores from another CUNY college Transfer of a 3 credit Freshman Compositioncourse (or a higher level English course for whichFreshman Composition is a pre-requisite) from anaccredited college, with a grade of C or higher.12

CLEP and AP Credits Acceptance of College Level Examination (CLEP) andAdvanced Placement Program (AP) credits are basedupon Departmental approval. Students must submitan official score report from the College Board(further information can be found navigating the webat www.collegeboard.com or by calling (888) 3080013).13

A.A., A.S.,A.A.S. DegreesNew Start students are able to choose from a varietyof majors at KCC. Below are some of the majors anddegrees offered.Speak with a NS Counselor about the different types of degrees.Associate in Arts (A.A.)Liberal Arts and Criminal JusticeAssociate in Science (A.S.)Biology, Chemistry, Education Studies, Fine Arts, MentalHealth and Human Services, Speech Communication, etc.Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.)Accounting, Business Administration, Nursing, SurgicalTechnology, Tourism and Hospitality, etc.14

Access Ability Services (AAS)We encourage students to document any disabilities at the AAS office inD-205. The AAS staff will assist in determining your eligibility for servicesand accommodations at KCC.Accommodations will give students equal access to college and can makethe difference in your grades!Services include: Priority registration Tutoring Reserved parking Disability related accommodations Individual counseling Adaptive computer equipment Special Biological Sciences Laboratory stations Other technological aids are available to students with special needs as well15

Pre-Enrollment Once you apply to Kingsborough’s New Start Program, youwill receive an email from the Transfer office to set up a preenrollment appointment During pre-enrollment you will meet with a counselor whowill determine whether or not you’ll need to test in Math. The pre-enrollment appointment is mandatory and willlead to an advisement and registration appointment for courses. Financial Aid If your financial aid application has already been processed forthe current academic year, you need to fill out and mail a TAPCHANGE FORM and a FAFSA CHANCE FORM to change yourschool code. Kingsborough’s school code for TAP is 1402. Kingsborough’s school code for FAFSA is 002694. Financial Aid If you have not yet applied for financial aid for the currentacademic year, complete and submit the FAFSA at:www.fafsa.ed.gov You can use KCC’s computer lab in V-201 to complete theFAFSA online.18
