An Overview of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) ProgramThe ADN program at DSLCC consists of five semesters (67 semester credit hours) of fulltime study. Students who successfully complete the program earn an Associate of AppliedScience Nursing Degree. They are then eligible to apply to take the National CouncilLicensure Examination for Registered Nurses. Criteria for Nursing Curriculum All Nursing courses must be taken in the order and semester listed.All general education courses within the Nursing curriculum must be taken in orbefore the semester listed.Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all Nursing, Biology, English, andPsychology courses.Biology courses should include an in-person, on-campus lab – virtual labs may nottransfer.Course Time LimitsReadmitting Nursing Students:Due to the rapid changes in health care, any nursing student who withdraws from thenursing program and later applies for readmission must repeat courses with the NSGprefix if the course is more than 2.5 years old at the time of readmission. This applies toDSLCC Nursing Students only – if not a DSLCC Nursing Student, see the policy thatapplies to Admission Requirements for Transfer Nursing Students in the NursingProgram Handbook. Readmission date is the start date of the semester in which thestudent would resume their nursing coursework. Admission Requirements for the ADN Program1. Graduation from high school or GED Students must have either graduated from high school or have completed their GEDor have a Home School Transcript of Completion. High school seniors may apply foradmission to the program and may be admitted pending their graduation. Anadvanced degree of Associate’s or higher may be considered in lieu of high schoolgraduation.2. Virginia Placement Test (VPT) – Math scores are valid for five (5) years aftherthe date of the test. Previously taken developmental courses will be valid for five (5)years after the term taken.5. Grade Point Average (GPA) Nursing candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 before being considered foradmission to the Nursing Program. Curricular GPA will be determined by gradesreceived for prerequisite coursework as well as any other courses taken to meet therequirements of the Associate’s Degree in Nursing.6. Nursing Entrance Test (ATI TEAS Test of Essential Academic Skills [ATI TEAS]) Beginning September 1, 2016, DSLCC will be using the 6th Edition of the ATITEAS Test (simply called the ATI TEAS). We will no longer accept scores fromthe ATI TEAS Test Version V.Nursing Test (ATI TEAS) Calendar Year – May 1 to April 30(ATI TEAS test must be taken by April 30)ATI TEAS Test scores may not be more than 24 months old as of the April 30thtesting deadline.Nursing candidates may take TEAS test as many as 3 times during May 1 to April 30for a FALL admission: for example o For Fall 2019: students have from May 1, 2018 – April 30, 2019o For Fall 2020: students have from May 1, 2019 – April 30, 2020Contact Nursing Office (540-863-2838) for ATI TEAS test registration information.Cost of registration and test are 70.00 each time test is taken.Optional study manuals are available at an additional cost (as of May 2018 cost isapproximately 50.00)DSLCC Tutoring Center offers TEAS Test Preparation. For Nursing candidates with equal ATI TEAS overall test scores, highest GPA(based upon prerequisite courses) will then be used.8. Information Session with Nursing Program Head You will be required to meet with the Nursing Program head for an interview toreview information and admission requirements. It is the applicants responsibility tocontact the Nursing Program head to schedule an interview.Accepted applicants will be required to attend an orientation session. Notification Policy Nursing candidates will be notified via formal letter regarding admission status byJune 1st.Those offered admission to the Nursing program MUST complete the following for finalacceptance:1. Health Form with the following requirements: Up-to-date immunizations:o Tdap (Tetanus booster)o MMRo Varicellao Hepatitis B (strongly recommend, but may decline)o Flu vaccine (during season)Two-step tuberculin skin test (TST)Physical exams---to be determinedNOTE:Additional costs may be incurred depending on individual immunization requirements.1. Drug Screen and Background Check These screenings MUST be obtained through CastleBranch, Inc.o Information is available in the Nursing Office or call 540-863-2838o Costs for these screenings are the responsibility of those offered admissionand are approximately 155.00o Deadline for these screenings is August 9.Screenings may have to be repeated based on clinical settings’ contractualagreements.Failure to submit and/or pass the drug test will result in denial of admission to and/ordismissal from the Associate’s Degree in Nursing Program.2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)All Allied Health Programs at DSLCC require “CPR for Health Care Providers”certification Deadline for submitting an up-to-date CPR card to the Nursing Office is August 9.3. Students must obtain and submit an official copy of their DMV Driving Record to theNursing Department by August 9.4.
