With itsexceptionally mild climateand Mediterranean plant life,Montreux is known as the VaudRiviera. We’ll have a chance towalk along the promenade andmake a photo stop at the famous12th-century Chillon Castle. Thenwe’ll travel to Zermatt, home ofthe Matterhorn—Switzerland’snational symbol and the mostphotographed mountain in theworld. We’ll havetime to take pictures and walkaround before heading to theglacier village of Grindelwald, apicturesque scene with fieldsof fruit trees and charmingbuildings set against a rockybarrier. We’ll then travel to Zurich,considered Switzerland’s mostimportant financial, industrial,and commercial center. Our dayconcludes at the hotel, wherewe’ll check in and have dinner.David Woollin will provide alecture on John Huss and theHussites this evening. (B, D)14, SaturdayZürich, Konstanz, BaselOur day begins with a guidedtour of Zürich including theGrossmünster, from whosepulpit Ulrich Zwingli establishedthe Reformation in the Germanspeaking part of Switzerland.We’ll also visit the Fraumünster,which is famous for its stainedglass windows by Marc Chagall,and St. Peter’s Church. After timefor lunch we’ll take an excursioninto Germany to Konstanz,where Czech priest, philosopher,and early reformer Jan Husswas burned at the stake. Weplan to visit the Hus Museum.Then we’ll end the day in theSwiss city of Basel, a wealthyand influential city at the time ofthe Reformation. Theologian andreformer Johann Oecolampadiuswas from Basel, and JohnCalvin’s Institutes of the ChristianReligion were first publishedhere. Calvin was exiledhere from 1538 to 1541, duringwhich time he was the pastorof a congregation of Frenchrefugees. In addition, reformersMartin Bucer and JohannesSturm lived and worked here. Awalking tour will introduce us toStrasbourg’s Cathedral Quarterand Petite France, the city’swell-preserved historic core.We’ll also see the EuropeanParliament and other Europeaninstitutions headquartered inStrasbourg. We’ll return to theship for lunch and then take anafternoon excursion to the lovelyAlsace region. Back on board,we’ll have dinner and Dr. Beekewill provide a lecture on PracticalLessons from the Life of JohnCalvin. Afterbreakfast, we’ll disembark andtravel to Bretten to visit theMelanchthon House, locatedon the site of the birthplace ofreformer Philipp Melanchthonwho was born in Bretten in 1497.This is now a museum withan extensive library. We’ll thentravel to the delightful city ofHeidelberg on the Neckar River.Martin Luther was called todefend his 95 Theses here, andit was later home to ZachariusUrsinus, author of the HeidelbergCatechism. We’ll visit theromantic Heidelberg Castle andwalk through the historic citycenter to visit the UniversityLibrary and the Protestant HolyGhost Church (where one of theHedielberg Catechism’s majorauthors, Caspar Oleivanus,ministered), followed by timefor an independent lunch.This afternoon we’ll travel toWorms (where Luther defendedhimself before Roman Catholicauthorities at the Diet of Wormsin 1521) to see the 19th-centuryLuther monument, the largestReformation monument in theworld. 18, WednesdayRüdesheim, Mainz,Upper Middle RhineValley, KoblenzWe’ll arrive in Rüdesheim amRhein this morning, at thesouthern end of the RhineGorge. We’ll board the waitingmotorcoach for an excursionto Mainz, where we’ll visit theGutenberg Museum, home totwo original editions of the worldfamous Gutenberg Bible. Backin Rüdesheim, we’ll re-boardthe cruise ship and have lunchas we cruise along the mostbeautiful part of the river—theUpper Middle Rhine Valley. Thissection boasts some 40 castlesand it has been the subject ofsongs and legends, includingthe famous Lorelei. We’ll arrivein Koblenz at 3:30 p.m. and takea walking tour of the city thatincludes the Church of Our Lady,the Basilica of St. Castor, and theSchnägelbrunnen, a fountain bythe Town Hall. We’ll also stop atthe Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial, atthe confluence of the Rhine andMoselle. After dinner on board,the evening will be at leisure,with the ship remaining dockedin Koblenz for the night. B, L, D) 19, ThursdayMarburg, Herborn,CochemThis morning we’ll take anexcursion by motorcoach toMarburg, where Martin Lutherand Ulrich Zwingli debatedduring the Marburg Colloquyin 1529. Following a walkingtour of Marburg and time foran independent lunch, we’lltravel to Herborn, where theCalvinist-Reformed HerbornAcademy was located from1584 to 1817. Caspar Olevianuswas a rector and JohannesPiscator was a professor here.We’ll then continue to the littletown of Cochem on the MoselleRiver. If time allows, we’ll takea walking tour of Cochem’shistoric center with its lovelyhalf-timbered houses. Relax overdinner on board as we cruisetowards Cologne. Dr. Hamiltonwill provide a lecture on theFive Solas of the ProtestantReformation this evening. Ourguided tour of the city includesthe world-famous CologneCathedral, which is Germany’smost visited attraction, as well asthe Romano-Germanic Museumto see the Dionysus mosaic.We’ll also walk through thehistoric Old Town and see theJewish Quarter, Neumarkt, andSt. Maria im Kapitol. Returningto the cruise ship, we’ll havea late lunch and spend theafternoon and evening on boardwith lectures by Dr. Hamilton onthe Five Solas of the ProtestantReformation. (B, L, D)

22, SundayKralingseveer, Amersfoort,Woudenberg, AmersfoortWe’ll have breakfast on boardand bid farewell to the MSAmadeus Silver II as we go bymotorcoach to Kralingseveer.Dr. Beeke will preach a sermon inEnglish, with a Dutch translator,at the Laankerk at 10:00 a.m.(which belongs to the HersteldHervormde [Restored Reformed]denomination). After lunch, we’llcontinue to Amersfoort, wherewe’ll check into our hotel, havesome time to rest, and enjoyan early farewell dinner. Dr.Beeke will lead and preach atan all-English service for theHertseld Hervormde church inWoudenberg at 6:30 p.m. We’llreturn to Amersfoort for thenight. (B, L, D)23, MondayReturn to the U.S.21, SaturdayDordrecht, Amsterdam Early this morning, we’ll arrivein the great city of Dordrecht,one of the oldest cities in theNetherlands. After breakfast onboard, we’ll disembark and visitthe renowned Augustinijnenkerk(Augustinian Church), and thenwalk a half mile through theharbor section of the old city tothe Great Church, where therewill be displays in conjunctionwith the 400th anniversary ofthe famous Synod of Dordrecht(Dort) that was held here 16181619. In rejecting Arminianism,the Synod of Dort composedthe well-known Canons of Dort,which summarized what laterbecame known as The FivePoints of Calvinism. After timefor an independent lunch, we’llhave the rest of the afternoonto explore Dordrecht beforeheading to Amsterdam. We’llrejoin the MS Amadeus Silver II,now docked in Amsterdam, fora final dinner and overnight onboard.
