You’ll find all the relevantinformation and instructions in this guide.Shortly after submitting your enrollment deposit, you'll receive login informationfor your student email account and SiS, our online student information system.These will become important tools for communication to and from the university.In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact theAdmissions Office and other offices on campus for help.CAMPUS HOUSINGDetailed instructions on how to apply for university housing are included in this brochure.For guaranteed housing, you should complete the online housing application and pay yourhousing deposit by May 1. You must also have submitted your enrollment deposit by thisdeadline. More information is available at uml.edu/reslife.HEALTH FORMSAll required health forms and information about immunization requirements mandated underMassachusetts law are available online at uml.edu/health. Please refer any questions abouthealth records and immunizations to studentimmunizations@uml.edu. Transfer students mustrequest their health and immunization forms, as they do not automatically transfer from your priorcollege/university. All health forms and immunization records must be completed and submittedvia the student health portal.2Checklist for Incoming Students Submit your 300 enrollment deposit. If you plan to live on campus, submita housing contract along with the 200 housing deposit.Pay your tuition balance beforethe start of classes. Complete and submit health formsvia the student portal no later thanAug. 1 for fall semester and Jan. 1for the spring semester. Sign up for a required orientationor transfer registration program. Submit final transcripts (high schooland/or college). Complete a Transfer College Reportfor each domestic four-year college oruniversity you have attended. Complete your FAFSA if you haven'talready done so. Activate your UMass Lowell email account. Purchase a meal plan if desired(required for some housing locations). Register with Disability Services ifneeded. Once matriculated, please senddisability documentation to DisabilityServices to request accommodations. Apply for a UMass Lowell StudentVisa Document (international applicantsonly) through the InternationalStudents & Scholars Office. Finalize your financial plan beforethe start of classes.FRESHMAN ORIENTATIONRequired Freshman Orientation Programs for students entering in the fall take place in the summer.Dates and times are posted online at uml.edu/orientation. These programs include registering foryour first-semester classes. The specifics of each program may vary according to the college/schoolin which you are enrolling.TRANSFER REGISTRATIONAll new transfer students are required to complete the transfer registration process before enrollingin classes. Transfer registration can be completed by an Accelerated Registration Program or thetraditional on-campus Transfer Registration Day. There are multiple sessions available for each major.We encourage you to select the earliest date that fits in your schedule at uml.edu/orientation.Transfer students are reminded that they must obtain their health and immunization records fromtheir previous institution and submit via the student health portal. We do not accept faxed oremailed records. Those records must be received within 30 days of the start of classes or you may bedelayed in moving into a residence hall and/or registering for classes.PLACEMENT TESTINGThe Massachusetts Board of Higher Education requires all public institutions to assess the skills ofincoming freshmen in math and English. Placement testing is available to all students online via linksprovided by the Orientation Office. Students are required to complete their placement testing priorto their scheduled orientation. Information is available online at uml.edu/dining or you can contact us at978-934-5369.STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIESStudents who are eligible for services under the Americans with Disabilities Act shouldregister with Disability Services before the start of classes (or before orientation if you needaccommodations during assessment testing). More information is available online atuml.edu/student-services/disability.HEALTH INSURANCE4Massachusetts state law requires that all students be enrolled in a health insurance plan thatmeets the comparable benefits established by the Commonwealth. If you have coverage undera comparable benefit plan, you may complete the waiver form in your Student Center in SiS afteryou receive your first invoice for the fall term. This form must be submitted every year, even if yourinsurance information has not changed. Students who are MassHealth eligible will be enrolled intothe university-sponsored plan at no additional cost. Students must complete the waiver processaccording to published UML deadlines, typically around Oct. 1, each year or they will be chargedfor insurance. If you have questions about university-sponsored health insurance coverage, pleasecontact health insurance@uml.edu.PARKING ON CAMPUSAny student may bring a car to campus. Students who choose to do so must apply for a parkingsticker and pay all relevant fees. The university has made significant investments in campus housing in recentyears and continues to do so. The result is a growing and thriving residentialpopulation. In fact, the majority of first-year students choose to live in campushousing. Many residents participate in themed Living-Learning Communities,where students who share a major or other interest live on the same floor,enjoy special programming and get to know a faculty mentor.HOW TO APPLY FOR CAMPUS HOUSINGAfter submitting an enrollment deposit and receiving login credentials, all full- and part-timematriculated students are welcome to apply for campus housing. Here's how:COMPLETE YOUR HOUSING APPLICATION AND CONTRACT ANDSUBMIT YOUR 200 HOUSING DEPOSIT ONLINE!housingLiving on campus gives you the best opportunityto take full advantage of the college experience andto succeed both academically and socially. Deadline: All first-year and transfer students entering in the fall who submit anenrollment deposit, housing contract and housing deposit by May 1 are guaranteedhousing for the academic year. We anticipate available space for the majority of studentswho enter the university in the spring semester. Although we cannot guarantee housingto students who submit their housing contracts after the deadline, we make every effortto house every student who wants housing. Process: During the online housing application process, you will apply for campushousing, review the housing contract, choose a meal plan and select a Living-LearningCommunity (if desired). In some cases, space is allocated on a first-come, first-servedbasis, so don’t delay! Payment: Your 200 housing deposit is an online payment that can be made atthe same time as your enrollment deposit. If you already paid your enrollment depositbut did not pay your housing deposit, you can make a payment at the end of thehousing application and contract process. LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITIESLiving-Learning Communities (LLCs) give students the opportunity to explore common interestswith other students in their living environment. They provide students with the chance to live inan engaged, like-minded community of students and fellow scholars. Many LLC students experiencecollege in similar ways, and LLCs provide support, resources and networking opportunities withstudents, staff and faculty at the university. LLCs facilitate close interaction with faculty advisors,who help students navigate their college experience. By living and participating in an LLC, studentsare provided with meaningful opportunities that help them make purposeful links between theacademic and co-curricular components of their college experience.10CREATIVE ARTISTSWhether your passions lie within studio art, animation, art history, graphicdesign, theater, creative writing or any other type of art, this LLC is designedfor all students who are interested in creative expression.DEVELOPING LEADERS IN ENGINEERINGEngineered to provide students with a hands-on, real-world, educationalliving and learning experience, this LLC is for all engineering majors andprovides an inside look at career paths of aspiring engineers.ACADEMIC & CAREER EXPLORATIONGREEK LIFEThis LLC is exclusive to undecided first-year students in the College of FineArts, Humanities and Social Sciences who are eager to explore variousmajors of study and career options.This LLC is designed for upper-class students who are members ofrecognized Greek letter organizations and for those who are interestedin learning more about the pillars of Greek life.ADVOCATES OF TOMORROWHEALTH EDUCATION ACADEMIC LIVING-LEARNING (H.E.A.L.L.)Together, students explore social activism, social change and the historical/philosophical foundations of justice. This LLC is for students who arepassionate about equal rights for all people and for those who aspireto become change agents.This LLC aims to help students interested in the health professionsexpand their experience in the classroom by providing a unique learningenvironment. This community is designed forany first-year student who has a passion for sustainability, social justiceand environmental activism.LIVING ALLEGRODesigned to transform today’s students into tomorrow’s musicians, thisLLC provides viable career training within the changing musical landscapeof the 21st century and is for all students who share a passion for music.MASTERMINDS12For first-year students, this LLC focuses on fostering critical and creativethinking, along with exploring the principles, methods and ethics ofpsychology as both a scientific discipline and as a profession. The goal ofthe community is to further students' understanding of human behaviorand the contribution of solutions to human problems in our changing world.MEDIA MAKERSIf you have a passion for television, film or social media, then this LLC isfor you! Designed as a community for all students with a passion for digitalmedia, this LLC allows students to explore the theory and practice of mediaas they are produced on the ground today.POLITIKOS: POLITICS & PUBLIC SERVICEGreek for “the statesman,” this LLC empowers first-year students todeliberate, debate and engage in the politics of our society. Discussingpolitics can be a hot-button topic, and this LLC dives right into thediscussion.REC-IT: FITNESS & WELLNESSOpen to sophomores, juniors and seniors, this LLC provides students withproactive ways to manage stress, healthy eating and physical activity inpreparation for a productive, balanced and rewarding life.RESERVE OFFICER TRAINING CORPS (ROTC)Designed for Air Force & Army ROTC cadets or those with an interest inpotentially joining ROTC, this LLC creates a supportive environment thathelps to foster success and experiential learning.
