President’s Perspective“Women Building Better Communities throughPartnerships”By Holly J. Battle2002-2003 PresidentWelcome back! I cannot believe September is here. Asyou can see from the title ofthis article, the focus of thisissue is Building Better Communities (appropriately ifyou consider Inn Transition South is getting readyto open). In this issue you will have the opportunity to read about Inn Transition North and InnTransition South. These are two of JLM’s signature projects addressing the issue of Domestic Violence, made possible through a partnership withMiami-Dade County. Domestic Violence is a veryprominent issue in our community and our Northand South projects are important pieces to addressing our community’s need. It is also important for each of us to educate ourselves aboutDomestic Violence. JLM should be proud of thesetwo programs. There are many leagues nationwide who are looking for such programs to helptheir own communities. You have also read a lot in the papers lately aboutour foster care system. In 1983, JLM was involvedin starting the CHARLEE program, another community partnership that responded to a need inour community. The CHARLEE program is highlighted in this issue as our Project History Spotlight. The fall is a busy time in our community. On September 10th you will have the opportunity to getout and vote for many initiatives that will be affecting the children of our community, (TheChildren’s Trust, the Mayors Pre-K, and others).Your voice is important. As we join forces to buildbetter communities and to be better child advocates we must use that voice. Please vote! Also, September 11th marks the anniversary of theattacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Many of you were at the GMM that morning, but no matter where you were, you will alwaysremember that day. It is my hope that out of thememory of this tragedy, you will find the positivespirit of giving, volunteering and rememberingothers. Fund RaisingCommunity Partners: What’s It All About?By Meredith Mills, Community Partners Committee Co-ChairI wanted to explain to all Junior League Members a littleabout a new initiative thatwe’re undertaking this year inthe League: the CommunityPartners Committee. Here isan overview and some questions and answersabout this initiative.BackgroundIn the past, each fundraising event was requiredto get their own underwriting. Let me be the firstto say that all past Fundraising Chairs did a FANTASTIC job in this area – BUT this was 1) a lot ofwork for Chairs and committees that were alreadyworking hard and 2) many times a duplication ofeffort – local businesses were being asked severaltimes to support League events. This year a committee was created to solicit underwriting for League events. Because we hope thiscommittee will work in the community to formpartnerships for the League, it’s being called theCommunity Partners Committee. The committeeis small but made up of dedicated League members and co-chaired by Maria Robbins and me.Every League member can be involved with thisnew program. We need everyone’s ideas, suggestions and help.Who Will the CommitteeApproach?Initially, the committee will approach two sources:foundations and local businesses, then companies, foundations and individuals that have contributedto League events in the past and finally to expanding the list of community contacts. Holly has recently included a request in the All-Member Emailsfor names that might be interested in partneringwith the League to help expand our reach. How Will We Divide theMoney Up AmongFundraisers? Our mission is to raise 92,000 this year for theJunior League of Miami; we don’t have a specificunderwriting goal for each event. We have developed a “Partnering Packet” to use when approaching businesses and foundations. There are severallevels of sponsorship available including namedsponsorships for individual fundraisers, or an organization may prefer to give money to the Leaguedirectly for use with projects. Can I Ask Someone to Be aCommunity Partner? We want to centralize this process, so if you havesomeone you want to approach for something specific – whether monetary or in-kind donation –we would ask that you let either Maria or I knowwho you will be approaching and for what purpose. This is not an attempt to prevent you fromasking someone with whom you have a connection for support. We simply want to make sure thatwe are not already talking to this person or company about support of another kind.Once you’ve asked us, we will be more than happyto give you a packet andhave you “make the ask.”In fact, if you have indispecializing in weddings, bridal & baby showers, viduals or companies thatbirthday & anniversary parties, corporate & special events.you have a relationshipmarylen expositowith, I would be very apcoordinatorp.o. box 52-4573preciative if you would letmiami, fl 33152-4573me know that you wouldmiami, fl 33152-4573be willing to present thephone: (305) 38-4245mobile: (30
