Imagine HumanityIt was Monday, July 11, 2016, the first meeting of the Shannon RyanPresidency, and an opportunity for us to be kind and merciful toour president before our year-long build-up to her demotion. DonJung kicked off our year at the podium, deferring to John Ackerwho advised President Shannon to form a Team of Rivals. Shannon then introduced us to RI President John Germ’s theme, “RotaryServing Humanity,” together with District Governor Greg O’Brien’smotto, “Imagine,” followed by her own theme question, “Why?” (Thebest answer to that question was our distinguished guest, incomingMBMS Interact President Lauren Ryan, Shannon’s daughter.) Wechoked up during a showing of a popular social media video aboutservice (from Thailand) and then watched Shannon choke up as shespoke of her Rotarian father, whose “Why?” for Rotary was, “It’s thehumanity in the group.” (Lauren will be her family’s 4th generationRotary president.) To top it off (pun intended), Shannon, to honorher hat-loving fisherman father, gave us all a Rotary cap.

Why?Some Board member “Whys” were shared: Mark Burton: Because ofyou (club members). Bob Lanahan: Fiji Water Project. Ken Deemer:Service. John Gardner: Giving back. David Gendron: Club projects.Loli Ramezani: Fellowship and service. Jordan Holbert: Choosingto give back. (Whereupon Jordan gave back, distributing MintwichMuffins to the members with July birthdays.) President Shannon thenwrapped up her introductory remarks by thanking Mark Burton for“the best demotion yet, after which Mark in turn thanked Chris Ullman, Duke Winser, Mark Lipps and the countless others who madeit the best demotion yet.The Education of Shannon RyanShannon thereupon shared her power-packed traditional presidentialcraft talk. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri (She does “show me”)and grew up in Seal, Huntington and Laguna Beaches. She was an athleteat Marina High School in Huntington Harbor with state records in the110-meter hurdles, and has by now logged 7 marathons and 6 triathlons. She moved on to CSULB and the College for Financial Planning (shewas President of her sorority), followed by 23 years in financial servicesand a career as a financial literacy advocate. She headed up variousoperations with Ameriprise in D.C., Ameriprise in Dallas, and nowprivate practice with Wells Fargo Advisors (a transition in 2009 so sheand husband Chris could enjoy their children).

Shannon At Your ServiceShannon cares about education and shows it through Heavy Purse (shewrites children’s books) and Parenting 2.0 (addressing the emotional andfinancial aspects of school curriculums). She joined Long Beach Rotaryin 2009 and our club in 2011. She is a Girl Scout Troop leader anda Board member with Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital. She is a member of the 2011 class of Leadership Manhattan Beach andis part of the National Charity League, a mother-daughter group. Shewas a 1987 Rotary Exchange student in Japan.Wade Hits The JackpotWade Austin found the white marble among 35 marbles, pocketed 474, and took it home to celebrate Wanda’s and his 39th weddinganniversary. Shannon then hit the bell to send us home, her eyes stilldamp as she looked up to “imagine” the look on her father’s face as hesmiled upon her “humanity.” It’s going to be a very good year. (Butwe are going to mock and badger her anyway.)Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett
