OFBPA NewsletterJune, 2013Mission Statement: “Bringing Business and the Community Together”President’s Message:All in favor of having a long weekend once a month raise your hand! It was sure nice to have theextra day off to relax and get caught up with things that a normal weekend never allows us! Hopefully everyonegot to enjoy their extra day whether it was gardening, visiting with family or friends or just doing nothing! This past week has brought to the forefront just how fragile our lives and how vulnerable ourbusinesses truly are. We’ve all witnessed via TV and social media news that in one split second how it can allchange. Several tornados have flattened the Midwest and one loud boom devastated many of the localbusinesses in the Rosedale area this past week. What an eye opener to know that everything you’ve worked sohard for can be gone or put on a serious delay in just the blink of an eye.It brings to mind two questions .1) When was the last time my business practiced our emergency drill that ensures everyone getting outof the building quickly and safely and everyone being accounted for?2) It should make everyone ask themselves:“Does my business insurance cover me in an event like this?”It seems like a good time to call your insurance agent and review your business practices. The OFBPA is partnering with the newest hotel is our area Home2Suites islocated just past CarMax on Rte 7. They are hosting a Grand Opening Party and Business Networking Event onJune 6th from 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm. Come help us welcome our newest business neighbor! Bring plenty of businesscards to share. PLEASE REGISTER on our website to help them plan for food. Our June meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 19th at 8:00 am. Nancy Somersand her staff will take us on a tour of how they embroider and imprint. They just did a table runner for us for thespring fair and they were able to get it done in just a few days. Please register via our website and Eventbrite ifattending.April and May we’re extremely busy for the OFBPA with two major events 30 days apart, but bothevents were well done and a lot of good contacts and networking came out of each event. Our Business toBusiness Expo gained us some new exposure and new members. Our Spring Health Fair and Fresh Food Drive that benefited the Eastside Shelter gave us a newperspective on bringing the business and community together. The OFBPA sincerely THANKS everyone whoparticipated. We estimate that 2500 lbs. of food was donated on that Saturday and the folks we met couldnot have been more appreciative. Free tote bags were given away, the smell of popcorn gave us a true fairsmell, our clown made some awesome balloon art for the kids (both big and old) and we partnered with some2

OFBPA NewsletterJune, 2013Mission Statement: “Bringing Business and the Community Together”new community neighbors who leveraged their folks for the food drive. We met many of the clients and thechildren of the shelter and heard some heartbreaking stories, but everyone thanked us for all that we did. Whenit was all said and done we all left that event knowing “we did something good”!Special Thanks to all who helped make our event successful! Starting with Larry Simmons who helpedwith the food drive part of this event and helped us partner with The Communuty Assistance Network, MollyShattuck of the Maryland Food Bank, our local libraries and senior centers to help make this food drive thebiggest one I’ve ever seen. Thanks to all 21 of our collection site hosts to our business memebrs who leveragedtheir co-workes and customer for the food drive to our new community association friends who we will partnerwith in the future to all those who help on event day. We met so many great people and Charmaine Short, theDirector of the shelter could not be moe appreciative of eveyrone’s efforts. Every client who came out to thefair thanked eveyrone for all the dontations. It was truly a heart warming event. Look for more photos on ourwebsite.\The OFBPA has sponsored “change collection containers” in our local businesses. If yourbusiness will host a collection container for the next few weeks, please let us know! If anyone can help deliverthe containers to the business that would be helpful. We’ve collected 800- 1000 in change the past few years!3
