The line proceeded to theBHS gym, where each studentexited the vehicle to receive theirdiploma from SuperintendentDoug Ardiana, have their nameannounced by BHS teacher LoriGroves, get their photo takeby School Board co-chairmanAngela Cardas and receive anarmful of goodies from ProjectGraduation, given out by BHSPrincipal Sabrina Belletti andAthletic Director Josh Davies. It was truly a group effort. After receiving their diplomas, the students hopped back intotheir vehicles, and were drivendown to the end of Ninth Streetby Dairy Queen, where theparade began only after everystudent had received their diploma. The seniors then traveled theusual holiday parade route downU.S. Highway 101 and throughOld Town.Thankfully, said many, thethreatening rain clouds thatearlier in the day had releasedbuckets of water, held off untilthe parade was over and studentswere entering the dry HarborLights Middle School gym tohave a group photo taken andbe gifted with piles of usefuland fun gifts donated by ProjectGraduation, including flat screentelevisions, barbecue grills, blenders, crock pots, sheet sets, towels, dishes and pots and pans, along with gift certificates andmuch more. Many of the seniors werealso awarded with generousscholarships totaling hundredsof thousands of dollars, bothfrom local groups and from thepost-secondary schools they planto attend. See related story forthe list of scholarships and futureplans for the seniors. The students missed muchof their last semester of schoolon campus, though they weresuccessful at distance learning, according to Ardiana. They alsoNaomi Martin rides in the back of a decorated pick-up as she waits to receive her high school diploma.missed the usual senior classactivities including their finalprom, their senior trip, year-endOSAA sports games and speech, band and choir activities andcompetitions and Project Graduation celebrations. But the seniors were as joyfuland excited as if they hadn’tmissed a thing — possible moreso, as they reunited with classmates for a final day of memories.“The future can be scary. Itcan be intimidating. And I’msure all of you already knowhow stressful it can be to think, plan, and worry about what’sto come,” said class valeditoran Jessica Tittle in a recordedspeech. “However, what we failto notice is that the future isreally really exciting at the sametime. It brings new experiencesand lessons and people that willultimately shape our life andmake us who we’re meant to be.“Don’t get me wrong, thefuture isn’t all pink ponies andglitter. There will be a lot ofpainful life lessons, but let’s notdwell on the misery to come.Let’s talk about the exciting partsof life instead! . Go ahead andmake some mistakes, have fun,and ultimately enjoy this time ofyour life because you currentlyhold the power to make your future whatever you want it to be!“So, trust the process, embracethe uncertainty, and enjoy thebeauty of becoming the personyou’ve always wanted to be.Congratulations class of 2020!It’s been a pleasure going toschool alongside all of you and Iwish the best for all of you.”Salutatorian Becky Yu’sspeech was also recorded, as wasclass president Aero Franklin’s.“For the past 13 years, we’vewaited for this moment,” Yusaid.“. Over the past four years,we have seen class after classgraduate and it’s finally our turn.Of course, today isn’t really whatwe expected after four years ofhard work. . After tonight, a lotof us are leaving, but what wearen’t conceptualizing is that tonight is the last night, for a littlewhile, that most of us will be inthe same place together, but inour case, a drive-through graduation and community parade.“ . To be honest, this will bea memorable high school graduation, and while this isn’t idealfor all of us, I’m thankful that weare allowed to gather “together-ish” to celebrate our successesthat we have achieved in the pastfour years.“ . Now we won’t get ourfinal years of sports or activities, the chance to stress overour senior project presentations, walk Ocean Crest’s halls for thelast time as a student, plan andcarry-out with our senior prank, write messages on every student’s cars, attend the senior tripor the all-night party, and have acommon graduation.“But instead, we ended ourhigh school careers by thinkingthat we would return to schoolwithin two weeks. So, tonightis where we would normallyreflect on how our high schoolexperiences have shaped us thepast four years and the memoriesthat we’ve created, but instead,we are reminded of what we hadmissed out on.“. Having an in-person graduation is something that manyof us have taken for granted.High schools across the nationhave been forced to host a virtualgraduation or even forced tocancel or postpone. Because ofthis, on the behalf of the BandonHigh School Class of 2020, I’dlike to thank the administrationfor an in-person graduationceremony, and everything thatthey’ve helped us with in thepast four years.”At Monday’s regular SchoolBoard meeting, Belletti andDavies commented about howsmoothly the drive-throughgraduation and parade went onSaturday.“Now they want a paradeevery year!” Belletti said.To watch the entire speechesor to view the graduation video, visit the following sites:BHS graduation video: https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v 857824774712129BHS Class of 2020 valedictorian, salutatorian and classpresident speeches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v TOz5y8s-4xI&feature youtu.benear milepost 208.Preliminary investigationindicated that a VolkswagenRabbit, operated by StevieShuey, 29, of Pleasanton, Calif.,was northbound and crossed intothe southbound lane and collidedwith a Hyundai Genesis operatedby Michael Lindsay, 69, of NorthBend.Shuey was transported by LifeFlight to the hospital.Lindsay sustained fatal injuriesand was pronounced deceased. The passenger in the Hyundai,Erica Billingslea, 33, of CoosBay, was transported to a hospitalwith injuries.Troopers are investigatingDUII by Shuey and are askinganyone who might have witnessed any poor driving to callOregon State Police SouthernCommand Center at 1-800-442-2068 and leave information forTrooper Dunlap.OSP was assisted by theDouglas County Sheriff’s Office,Reedsport Police Department,Gardiner Fire Department, Reedsport Fire Department, Winchester Bay Fire Department, LowerUmpqua Ambulance, OregonDepartment of Transportationand Southern Oregon PublicSafety Chaplains.North Bend man dies in crashThe WorldGARDINER — A North Bendman was killed Saturday in ahead-on crash two miles north ofGardiner.According to an Oregon StatePolice report, on June 13 atapproximately 7:24 p.m. OSPtroopers and emergency personnel responded a two-vehiclecollision on U.S. Highway 101Classof 2020futureplansThe WorldFuture plans and scholarships for Bandon seniorsTraylyn Arana — ChemeketaCommunity College - Paramedic: Dew Valley Club Scholarship 1,000; Francis and AliceStadelman Revocable LivingTrust Tuition Scholarship 2,500;Bandon Education Foundation:Vocational Scholarship 1,000.Hannah Blackard — Southwestern Oregon CommunityCollege - Social Services: Marsha Felton Memorial Scholarship 1,000; Bill Magness Scholarship 1,000, renewable; Francisand Alice Stadelman RevocableLiving Trust Tuition Scholarship 2,500; American Red CrossScholarship 250; Bandon Education Foundation: Scholarshipsponsored by Herbal Choices 2,000.Kianna Brookshier — Southwestern Oregon Community College - Nursing: Bandon DunesGolf Resort Scholarship 2,000renewable 4-years; Bill MagnessScholarship 1,000, renewable;Dorothy Zaddach FettermanNursing Scholarship 500;Bandon Education Foundation:Scholarship sponsored by HerbalChoices 5,000.Abigail Carman — Southwestern Oregon CommunityCollege - Nursing.Remi Curniski — Moving toCanada.Isaac Cutler — SouthwesternOregon Community College Undecided: Bandon Dunes GolfResort Scholarship 1,000, renewable 4-years; Southwestern Oregon Community College- 2-yeartuition waiver worth 4,455.Autumn Davis — Southwestern Oregon Community College- Screenwriting/Filmmaking:Caryll Mudd Sprague: Outstanding Senior in the CreativeArts 3,500; Bandon DunesGolf Resort Scholarship 2,000renewable 4-years.Carley Deslauriers — Southwestern Oregon CommunityCollege - Linguistics.Aero Franklin — WesternOregon University - CriminalJustice/ Military Science: Coquille Valley Elks Most ValuableStudent 3,000; Bandon DunesGolf Resort Scholarship 2,000renewable 4-years; Norman F.Sprague Jr. scholarship in Computers, Science and Math 3,000;Bandon by the Sea Rotary ClubVocational Scholarship 1,500;Prefontaine Foundation Scholarship 2,000; United StatesArmy ROTC 3-year scholarship 80,000 3 years; Western OregonUniversity Campus Visit Scholarship 1,000.Braydon Freitag - Universityof Dubuque - Business: Coquille Valley Elks Most ValuableStudent 2,000; Bandon DunesGolf Resort Scholarship 1,000renewable 4-years; Bill MagnessScholarship 1,000, renewable;Eileen M.
