EditorialSo you think you can write?(Of course you can!)Publication of research, studies, and case reports are essentialto advance knowledge andimprove infection prevention andcontrol (IPAC) practices. CJIC providesan excellent opportunity to share IPACresearch, studies, and experiences througha circulation of 3000 copies distributed inCanada and around the world.Potential authors may wonder whethertheir research or works are potentialcandidates for publication in CJIC. Someof these potential authors may have previously submitted abstracts to the annualCHICA conference. Some may haveconducted reviews, studies or research, orhave interesting cases to share. Althoughthe raw materials for an article are oftenalready in these abstracts or other recordsof research, studies, or case experience, itmay appear to be a challenge to move tothe next step – publishing. The process of preparing a paper forpublication follows a few key steps:1. Determine the message to be conveyed by the article. In other words,is this information of value to CHICACanada members and CJIC readers?Does it bring new and/or importantinformation to the field? Is it importantto improving health care in the area ofinfection prevention and control? Doesit expand current IPAC knowledge?2. Review the information for authors athttp://www.chica.org/inside cjic journal.php. CJIC follows the UniformRequirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals November2003. http://www.icmje.org. Theserequirements, as well as the information on the CJIC website, are invaluable resources for constructing theactual manuscript.3. Identify the authors and affiliationsfor each author as well as identifyingany potential conflicts of interest. Allauthors should have made substantialcontributions to the work.4. Organize data and supporting materials including references under the keyarticle headings as applicable. Title page. The title should reflectthe message that is to be conveyed.Remember the article is indexed inCJIC by its title. Authors and affiliations are included here. Abstract. This briefly summarizesthe why, how, and what, as well asconclusion(s) of the articles. Introduction. This includes background and the why. The sectionshould end with your researchquestion. Methods. This is the how. Thereshould be enough detail included forthe reader to be able to repeat theresearch or project. Results. This is the what. Data fromthis section may be presented intables and figures which graphicallydepict the results found. Discussion. This elaborates on theanalysis of results and provides interpretation. The discussion can includehow the results relate to the originalresearch question and other publications in the field. Conclusions. This is the product ofthe methods, results and discussion. It is important to ensure that the original intent of the article (the message)is consistent with the conclusions. References. The references areincluded in the last section of thearticle and are numbered in orderof the appearance of the reference162 Fall 2011 The Canadian Journal of Infection ControlPat Piaskowski, RN, HBScN, CICClinical Editor, CanadianJournal of Infection Controlin the body of the article and followthe CJIC requirements. Within thebody references are identified bya number in parentheses [e.g., (1)]and immediately following the referenced material.5. Start writing, using the above headingsas a guide to organize the article.6. Review the first draft. Is the rightinformation in the right section? Is itclear? Are acronyms or unusual termsdefined? Is there information missingor too much information? Does thediscussion reflect the results? Do theconclusions flow from the discussion? Are references noted as required andreflected in the reference list?7. Prepare a second draft. Have someoneelse review the article and providecomments. A chapter member whohas already had an article publishedmay be helpful.8. Once the final draft is prepared, checkagain to ensure that the manuscriptand submission guidelines have beenfollowed. Check spelling and grammar.9. Submit article for review. After the article is submitted, the editorin-chief sends the article for reviewto member(s) of the editorial reviewboard. After at least six to eight weeksthe decision on accepting the article forpublication and any needed editorialchanges are returned to author. Oncethe changes are made the article isreviewed by the editor-in-chief and ifthe required changes are addressed, thearticle is placed in queue for publicationin a future issue. Timeline to publicationcan be at least one year. Prior topublication, the author will receive afinal PDF for review. You too can be an author.RETURN to Index
