2022 GUIDELINESFOR HOLDERS2021OF A NATIONALSENIOR CERTIFICATE

INTRODUCTIONThis document provides you, as the holder of aNational Senior Certificate (NSC), with essentialinformation related to admission in 2022. Readit in conjunction with the 2022 UndergraduateProspectus.Minimum requirements for admission for holdersof the NSCThe minimum requirement for admission to aBachelors degree programme is an NSC with anachievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50– 59%) or better in four subjects.2Assessing your academic performanceFor applicants writing the NSC we use an AdmissionPoints Score (APS), a Faculty Points Score (FPS),and a Weighted Points Score (WPS) to assess yourperformance at school. The scores are described indetail below. The percentages achieved in NSC examinations(grade 11 final, grade 12 preliminary and grade 12final) will be allocated an admissions score equal tothat percentage.APS calculationAdd the six best subject percentages, excluding LifeOrientation and scores for “Advanced Programme”(AP) subjects, but including English and any otherrequired subject(s) for the relevant programme. (Inother words, for a programme where Mathematicsand Physical Sciences are required, take the scoresfor English, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and thebest three of the remaining subjects other than LifeOrientation to calculate your APS.) Results below40% for any subject do not attract a score.FPS calculationFor applications to the faculties of Commerce,Engineering & the Built Environment, Humanitiesand Law, the FPS, out of 600, equals the APS. Forapplications to the Faculty of Health Sciences, theFPS is the sum of the APS and the percentagesobtained for NBT tests, and is out of 900. Foradmission to programmes in the Faculty of Science, the FPS is out of 800. Count English, as well asdouble the scores for Mathematics and PhysicalSciences, and the best three of the remaining scores, other than Life Orientation.WPS calculationFor South African applicants only, multiply your FPSby your disadvantage factor in order to calcualteyour WPS. This is a percentage between 0% and10%, except for applications for admission toprogrammes in the Faculty of Health Sciences, where the range is between 0% and 20%.Redress for diversityWe categorise all South African applicants(not international applicants) according to thecategorisation of their parents’ race under apartheid. This allows us to have a proxy for the applicant’srace. We use these categories to give priority inmaking selection decisions to ensure that we meetthe diversity targets we set for each class. There are four redress categories: Redress category 1: An applicant with at leastone parent classified as Black under apartheid Redress category 2: An applicant with at leastone parent classified as Coloured (and theother not as Black) under apartheid Redress category 3: An applicant with at leastone parent classified as Indian (and the othernot as Black or Coloured) under apartheid Redress category 4: An applicant with at leastone parent classified as Chinese (and theother not as Black, Coloured or Indian) underapartheid

National Benchmark Tests (NBTs)The NBT requirements were suspended in 2020due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the exception of programmes in the Facultyof Engineering & the Built Environment, NBTsare required for admission to all undergraduateprogrammes for admission in 2022.All undergraduate applicants who are normallyresident or at school in South Africa must writethe NBTs, and all applicants to programme inHealth Sciences must write the NBTs whereverthey reside. The only exception is admissionto programmes in the Faculty of Engineering &the Built Environment, for which NBTs are notrequired. Applicants are responsible for the costsof writing the NBTs.There are two NBTs:The Academic and Quantitative Literacy Test (AQL)and Mathematics Test. The Academic and Quantitative Literacy Test(AQL) consists of two components, namely, academic literacy and quantitative literacy. An5applicant will be awarded separate scores foreach component, even though they are writtenas one test. Applicants to all faculties, excludingEngineering & the Built Environment, write theAQL. Applicants who wish to enter a programmewith mathematics-based coursework are requiredto write the Mathematics Test.Note: You must register for the NBTs before you applyonline (or before you submit a paperapplication form); include your NBT registration number inyour application, except if you are applying toprogrammes only in the Faculty of Engineering& the Built Environment; have written the NBTs by 2 October 2021, butno later than 31 July 2021 for Faculty ofHealth Sciences programme applications. For registration and further informationabout the NBTs, dates and venues, pleasevisit www.nbt.uct.ac.zaCONTACTING USBOOKING OF ONLINE APPOINTMENTS(All you need is an internet connection, and we will do the rest.)Michelle Roodt- 021 650 4556michelle.roodt@uct.ac.zaSTUDENT RECRUITMENT MANAGERGcinumzi Haduse- 021 650 3743gcinumzi.haduse@uct.ac.zaFollow us@uctadmissionsApply online at http://applyonline.uct.ac.zaClosing date for all undergraduateprogrammes is 31 August 2021.www.uct.ac.zaThe University has made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information provided. However, we reserve the right at any time, if circumstances dictate, to make changesto any of the published details.
