If you are one of our many supporters, you are saving lives, one animal at a time.Whether you help us by adopting a shelter pet, attending our events, becoming a member, sending a memorial or honorarium, organizing your own fundraiser, remembering us in yourestate plan, or donating, you’ve become part of making the difference for more than 6,600animals over our 18 years of operation. We rely on your generosity to champion our missionof caring for animals in need and finding them forever homes. There are many worthy causesand charitable organizations asking for your assistance both monetarily and through volunteerism, but HMAS hopes we can count on your continued help both today and in the future. You are our HEROS!MN Board of Animal HealthEvery year HMAS undergoes inspection by the Minnesota Board of AnimalHealth, whose mission is to protect the health of the state’s domestic animals. The inspection, conducted by a veterinarian, ensures the shelter is compliantwith Minnesota Statues 347.31 to 347.40 and Minnesota Rules 1721.0520.These statues and rules address proper facilities, standards of care (food, water, and confinement areas), veterinary care and record keeping. HMAS once again had a successful inspection in 2017. The inspector noted that our medical protocols were excellent and cleanlinesswas exceptional. She stated “HMAS is one of the nicest shelters she had visited.”2017 Statistics(January-August)Intakes: 281 76 dogs 205 catsAdoptions: 276 77 dogs* 199 cats Transfers: 15Strays: 159Surrenders:71* Please note, there can be discrepancies of statistics due to animals received in the prioryear and not adopted until the current year.Move over Cesar Milan! HMAS has its own “dog whisperer.”David Laine, a volunteer at the dog building, exhibits a unique connection with dogs. As afield medic and medical technician for six years in the Navy he gained plenty of experienceproviding care for those in need. He and his wife Marilyn have both been volunteers for thepast fifteen years. When dogs come to the shelter, they can be anxious, confused, depressed and scared. Davidpays special attention to these animals. He will comfort them for hours letting them knowthey are safe and secure.A recent example of this involved a surrendered dog that became very agitated during thunderstorms. A few days after intake at HMAS, a storm began to brew. Under a vet’s care, antianxiety* medication was administered as the storm progressed. That evening after the shelter closed, David left his home atmidnight to check on her. He joined her in her kennel, wherehe stayed until 2AM. It was a very selfless, compassionate actthat seemed to give her comfort and confidence.Thank you Dave, for the extraordinary attention you give to all the dogs at HMAS!*If your pet suffers from anxiety, check with your veterinarian, there may be medications to combat this condition.

With special thanks to Fundraising Review Kim Winter (center ) for sponsor ing HMAS Petof the Week each month for the past 10 years. Her donations and the support of Crow River Media havehelped hundreds of animals find loving families. Presenting a mosaic composition of the images of the animals she has sponsored, is Roberta Yates, HMAS president, and Anthony Anderberg, Vice President and creator of the picture. We work hard every year raising money through ourevents. Our two largest, the “Paws on Parade” Petwalkin June and our Rummage/Book/Bake sale in Septembergrossed over 13,000 and 10,000 respectively. In addition, we “run” the Cashwise Brat Stand for 3 days inSeptember, which is always successful. We also serveas parking attendants and maintenance staff at the Fairgrounds during the Wright County Dog Show in October. Our next fundraising appeal is our Christmas letterwhich will be sent out during the month of December.Because a large portion of our annual budget dependson events and donations, we’re always looking for opportunities to expand our fundraising. If you have anidea to help us, whether as an individual or a business,or want to serve on the fundraising committee, pleasecontact the shelter.PS: If you order through Amazon smile(smile.amazon.com) and name HMAS as your charity,Amazon donates directly to us. Using the Wooftrax app(wooftrax.com) when you walk your dog also raisesfunds for us.PSS: It’s never too early to donate items for next year’srummage sale which is always held the first weekendafter Labor Day.PSSS: No donation is too small! Dr. Kristin Roffey of Hutchinson Pet Hospital, for the additional support she extended to HMAS in theabsence of the shelter’s veterinary technician. We alsorecognize our volunteers, Anthony Anderberg, Samantha Emigh, David Laine and Marilyn Laine who assumed added responsibilities during this time. What the Vet Says.Canine Influenzaby Dr. John Froning @ Animal Medical Center on Crow RiverThis summers’ “flu” cases lead to many good discussions. Should my dog be vaccinated? What are the clinical signs? What are the risks? Can I contract influenza from my dog?Canine influenza (H3N2) is highly contagious and spreads rapidly from dog to dog via respiratory discharges, directlyfrom cough/sneeze/bark, indirectly on shared bowls/housing, and from one dog to another via human skin. The signsare not unlike “kennel cough” symptoms—coughing, lethargy, decreased appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose—but making a definitive diagnosis is tough without laboratory testing. A small percentage of infected dogs will progress to more severe clinical signs including high fever, rapid breathing and pneumonia. Signs typically appear 1 to 5days after infection. There have been no reported cases of H3N2 in people.I recommend vaccinating based on risk assessment and taking precautions to prevent your pet from acquiring andtransmitting the virus. Vaccinate if your dog will have exposure to other dogs that travel (shows, hunting), or if your dog will be visiting boarding facilities/doggie day cares, groomers, dog parks, or if you are traveling to areas with known cases. The risk is higher for dogs with compromised immune systems, for example those with diabetes, Cushing’s, cancer, aging, or on high doses of prednisolone/cyclosporine or other immunosuppressive medication. Avoid kennels and areas with reported coughing dogs. If your dog develops a cough and has been in contact with other coughing dogs inthe prior 14 days, refrain from activities involving other dogs to avoid putting themat risk.Transmission from dogs to cats is possible but considered rare—take precautions aroundcoughing dogs. The virus is easily killed by common disinfectants (quaternary ammonium compounds, bleach at 1:30 dilution). Washing hands with soap and water or usingalcohol-based hand sanitizer will decrease transmission.Testing is available and is most successful if done prior to antibiotic treatment and duringthe initial 5 days of illness.5

Happy Tails! In late winter of 2017,Savannah was surrendered to HMAS.She is a NorwegianForest Cat, a very noble breed. We knewshe was special anddeserved the perfecthome since she hadcome from a specialhome. This was the first time the shelter hosted a Weegie (theirnickname). She was amazing, beautiful, large and supersweet. I had my eyes opened as to just what a wonderfulcat she was. The first week she became available, onadoption Saturday, we received a call from an interestedparty in Connecticut. Through the Norwegian Forest CatRescue site, these ladies had discovered Savannah. Theyknew the breed, loved the breed (owned several) and werefamiliar with their history and particular traits. They havea male Weegie named Jasper. I put a pending on Savannah and even before I left the shelter, Erin and Lynnewere making preparations to drive to Minnesota to gether.Flash to Monday afternoon, just two days after the phonecall, the adoption took place.Three hearts were united andthe long journey back homebegan. We are now friendson Facebook and I get to seehow wonderful this ending is.It was my honor to facilitatethis adoption. Thanks, HMAS!I suggest everyone look up the Norwegian Forest breedand learn about them. Mary Guggemos-Adoption CounselorThought we would letyou know how Teddyis liking his new home!He gets two nice walksevery day. He loves allhis toys, his chew toy,his rope toy and evenhis ball! He has thatpuppy face down andhe got it pretty fast. Helikes to bark at everyone that walks by likehe owns the place (hekind of does). We willstay in touch! Tucker and HeatherYou had named him Grant, I renamed him AJ; he has tobe with me all the time. Here we are launching the steamboat Minnehaha into lake Minnetonka. At 3 mph, it’ll takea while. Thank You! Jeff from Excelsior, MNNora is a CH (cerebellar hypoplasia) kitty that camethrough HMAS in 2016. CH is a non-progressive, noncontagious neurological condition that affects walking andbalance and occurs because part of the brain is underdeveloped. Cats with this condition don’t seem to “know”they are different than other cats and barring other healthconditions, have the same life span. While CH is not anextraordinarily common condition, it does require a special owner who is willing to provide the best care for theircat. Many owners will say that their CH cat is the sweetestever and what they lack in coordination, they make up inpersonality. Nora was fortunate to be adopted by Laurieand Galen. Here’s what they say about her:“I wanted to give you an update on Nora—she is doingvery well. She is definitely a moderate CH kitty and seriously visually impaired, but a very sweet, very messy girland we don’t mind! We are slowly introducing her to ourother visually impaired kitties. She seems to have gotten a lot stronger being ableto roam free in a largerroom.”Laurie and Galen requestedHMAS’s help in locatinganother CH kitty as a possible companion for Nora. They ended up adoptingsisters Uma and Ruby, bothaffected by CH. They reportthat Nora is more alert, happier and more playful nowthat the kittens have joinedthe family. Thank you tothis wonderful couple foradopting cats with specialneeds!Laurie & Nora6
