Youmay even discover opportunities that you’d never experiencein a civilian practice, like providing dental care to childrenin a foreign country. If you want to spend part of your ArmyReserve time teaching your specialty, the Dental Corps offersyou that option, too, but your biggest source of satisfactionwill come from the treatment you provide your Soldierpatients.As an Army Dentist, you will work with a skilled staff. Medical Service Corpsofficers work in hospital administration and informationsystems management, engage in radiological physics andradiation protection, plan and direct entomology programsfor insect and rodent control, work in air and water pollutionabatement, establish optometric screening procedures forearly detection of glaucoma and more.The Medical Service Corps is comprised of numerousspecialties divided into the following groupings: HealthServices, Laboratory Sciences, Preventive Medicine andBehavioral Sciences. A 30,000 bonus (paid 10,000 annually) is available formicrobiologist, clinical laboratory, nuclear medicine andentomologists joining the Army Reserve.Healthcare Professionals Loan Repayment Program(HPLR) provides up to 50,000 for the repayment ofoutstanding education loans to microbiologists, clinicallaboratory, nuclear medicine, clinical psychologists andentomologists. HPLR is paid over three years with up to 20,000 paid the first two years and up to 10,000 paid inthe third year.MEDICAL SPECIALIST CORPSKEEPING THE SOLDIERS FITPossess a BS degree from an accredited college oruniversity in a coordinated undergraduate program or havecompleted an ADA-approved hospital dietetic internshipor possess a MS degree in dietetics or related field thatmeets ADA requirements for registration, to be followedimmediately by a dietetic internship in a Joint Commissionon Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)accredited hospital.Physical TherapistsHave a baccalaureate, master or doctoral degree with amajor in physical therapy or a certificate in physical therapywith a baccalaureate degree in another area of study.Possess a current unrestricted state license as a physicaltherapist.Occupational TherapistsYour primary function in the Army Medical Specialist Corpsis to provide direct patient care, readiness training, wellnesseducation and injury prevention to our nation’s Soldiers.As a Dietitian, Physician Assistant, Occupational Therapistor Physical Therapist, you’ll have the opportunity to workin well-equipped Army medical centers, Army communityhospitals, clinics or field medical units.RPI 711 FS, June 2011Have a valid, unrestricted state license as a dietitian.Possess a baccalaureate degree or a master’s degreein occupational therapy or a baccalaureate degree inanother area of study followed by a certificate programin occupational therapy approved by the AmericanOccupational Therapy Association (AOTA).THERE’S STRONG. Program must beat least 20 months in length.Certified by the National Commission on Certification ofPhysician Assistants (NCCPA).NURSE CORPSTAKE CHARGE OF YOUR CAREERAs a Nurse in the Army Reserve, you’ll have a uniqueopportunity to combine your professional skills withopportunities that are hard to come by as a civilian. You’llbe a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, with all therank and benefits accorded. You’ll earn a second income, getadditional training in management skills, and become a vitalpart of a system of professional health care providers.As a part of the Army Reserve Health Care Team, you willwork in a network of top health care professionals witha wide range of experience and backgrounds. You maymake new friends and professional contacts that can helpwith your civilian career. As a team, you will share yourdedication and pride in serving your country by providing avital service that only a select few can give.During your Reserve training, you may work at a localReserve unit or a military or civilian medical facility, attendseminars and conferences, or be on a team in support ofhumanitarian missions throughout the world. To be eligible for the BSN STRAP, applicants musthave an ADN or Diploma Degree from an accredited nursingprogram and a current unencumbered RN license. BSN STRAPparticipants may only receive a maximum of 24 months ofstipend payments. STRAP is also available for nurses whopossess a BSN from an accredited nursing program, holda current unencumbered RN license and are enrolled in anaccredited MSN program in critical care nursing or nurseanesthesia.Health Professional Special Pay provides a bonus of 45,000( 15,000 per year for a maximum of three years) for nurseanesthetists (CRNA) and 30,000 ( 10,000 per year fora maximum of three years) for nurses with their BSN. TheHealth Professions Bonus Program applies to qualified criticalcare nurses, medical/surgical nurses, psychiatric nurses, andperioperative nurses for a maximum of three years. Participantsmust serve in a U.S. Army Reserve Troop Program Unit, AMEDDProfessional Management Command, or Individual MobilizationAugmentee Program. HPLR ispaid over three years with up to 20,000 paid the first twoyears and up to 10,000 paid in the third year.VETERINARY CORPSNOT YOUR USUAL APPROACHAs you might expect, you could give complete medical andsurgical care to government-owned patrol dogs, drug- andexplosive-detection dogs, laboratory animals and ceremonialhorses.Or, as an exciting change of pace, you could also be active indisease control, biomedical research, microbiology, toxicology,animal-transmitted diseases and epidemiological quarantineprograms.In fact, almost one-third of Army Veterinarians are engagedin biomedical and subsistence research and development.Army Veterinarians also provide worldwide support for AirForce, Navy and Marine units. Accreditation must be by theAmerican Veterinary Medical Association. In the meantime youare also eligible to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan, aflexible, portable retirement savings and investment plansimilar to a 401(k).Your introduction to the Army Reserve begins with theAMEDD Officer Basic Leaders Course (OBLC), a programthat will expose you to the variety of mental and physicalchallenges you’ll face as a member of the AMEDD. You’lllearn the Army’s approach to health care firsthand, trainingwith other professionals and attending lectures, conferencesand demonstrations that cover everything from Armycustoms to management of mass casualties. At this pointyour military education is just beginning and you will havenumerous opportunities to continue advancing your militaryand medical skills.After completing OBLC, you will typically serve with anArmy Reserve unit a minimum of two days each monthand you will be required to participate in Annual Trainingfor two weeks each year. As an Army Reserve Soldier, youalso understand that you can be mobilized and deployed toprovide health care to our Soldiers.Your duties may include everything from conducting a fieldtraining exercise to participating in nation-building projectsaround the world. Or, depending on your specialty, you couldbe receiving briefings on technological advances at an Armyhospital, attending seminars and specialty conferencesaround the country, pursuing continuing education orteaching.For those individuals with no prior military service theservice obligation is eight years.
