Student & Counselor Responsibilities

Your Child is responsible for sending 1. The Application– Student must submit a Virtual Transcript Request Google Form directly to yourcounselor 10 school days before the school’s application deadline for each and everyschool.1.The Application Fee (Have questions regarding fee waivers? Email yourcounselor)1.Resume (if optional -send one!)1.Student must be in communication with their teacher(s) as they submitapplications to tell them which schools to send their letter to.1.SAT or ACT scores - fees involved– Scores will be sent directly by YOUR CHILD to each college officially throughthe testing service’s websites below (may require your assistance as there arefees associated with sending).SAT: www.collegeboard.orgACT: www.act.org

Counselor Support & RoleYour child should have met with their counselor to review theirplans. What Is Test Optional?When a school says that they are test optional, it is YOUR choicewhether or not to send your standardized test score to a college.Many colleges understand that it has been challenging for studentsto have access to take the SAT/ACT this year and are now testoptional. Therefore, a significant number of schools are makingtheir admissions decisions on a holistic review.For a complete list of schools that are test optional for the2020-2021 application period please click here.**Please keep in mind that some scholarships or merit-based awardsmay still require standardized test scores.

ScholarshipSMany colleges offer merit andneed-based scholarships:Merit scholarships are awardedbased upon being a solidacademic student by the college.Need-Based scholarship is basedupon financial need from thecollege in addition to what astudent may receive from thestate.National Scholarships: mwww.scholarships.comwww.scholarshipmonkey.com

Local & outside Scholarship InformationScholarships provide financial assistance in pursuit of higher education. Theytypically require an application which might include an essay, transcript orrecommendation letter.There are two categories of scholarships:1.2.LOCAL scholarships are offered by Bergenfield businesses, organizations andindividuals and they have their own process which will be explained in moredetail beginning in January/February.OUTSIDE scholarships refers to any scholarship from an external organizationoutside of our pool of local donors, these can be found independently oremailed out from the School Counseling Department. Some sites to check out foroutside scholarships are found in Naviance. Ask your counselor for more info.If your child has applied to an OUTSIDE scholarship and a transcript or letter ofrecommendation is required, have your child contact their counselor.

NJ Stars Program InformationWhat’s NJ Stars?You can read full information about it at HESAA. But, thebasics are that seniors who are in the top 15% of theirclass at the end of their junior year or end of senior yearqualify. Through the program, you can attend communitycollege for free for the first two years. Then, if you keepup certain grades, you can be eligible for NJ Stars II,where you can also go to a number of in-state 4 yearcolleges for your next two years, also for free.Counselor will notify student/family if they qualify.

Visiting Colleges

Virtual College & Military Visits @ BHSSince September, BHS has been offering online college visit opportunities forBHS students to meet with college admissions or military representatives - getmore information and ask questions! These are often the reps who will readthe students application for admission! TIP: It helps to first do some research online regarding the school, andhave a few questions prepared for the representative.Students have been given explicit directions on how to register for thesevirtual visits on Naviance.If they still need help, have them email their counselor!

Virtual College Fairs & tours Some colleges/universities are hosting limited tours in person. Individual colleges and universities are posting links andinvites to their virtual admissions programming options on theirschool websites You can also check out virtual tours at YouVisit or CampusTours.
