ORIENTATION OVERVIEWRESERVE YOUR ORIENTATION DATEOrientation at Ohio State aims to get new Buckeyes off toa strong start. We designed our transfer student orientationto meet your specific needs, with the understanding that youalready have college experience.Reserve your orientation date prior to making any travelarrangements; we cannot guarantee that orientation dateswill be available to accommodate prior travel arrangements.Your orientation is a one-day program, with check-in beginning at 7:30 or 8:45 a.m., depending on your testing needs.For most students, orientation activities end by 3 p.m.During orientation you’ll have the following opportunities: Receive information about the many campus resourcesavailable to Ohio State students Attend group advising sessions to learn more about yourmajor or academic program and to schedule classes Complete university business, such as getting yourBuckID and consulting with Student Financial Aid Complete any necessary placement tests Become more familiar with campusORIENTATION COSTYour first semester Statement of Account will show a 25orientation fee, which covers our administrative costs.Additional expenses for the day include parking ( 8) andmeals while on campus.ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATIONStudentsOrientation is required for all new students, and you areexpected to participate in all orientation activities. Shouldyou miss any of the scheduled sessions, you may berequired to return for another orientation program.FamiliesAt Ohio State, we recognize the important role familymembers play in the success of our students. Check the accuracy of the major/academic programprinted on the inside cover of this brochure. Consult with your guests about their availability; onceyou have reserved a program it cannot be changedonline.3. Go to orientation.osu.edu/reservations.4. Log in with your Ohio State username and password.5. Click on the Orientation Information link to register fora program.6. Reserve your orientation date for your major/academicprogram. Since you register for classes at orientation,the earlier you are able to attend orientation, the moreflexibility you’ll have in scheduling classes for your firstsemester.Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-servedbasis. We recommend that you attend the earliestorientation date by which you can complete yourmath placement exam (if required) and transfer creditevaluations.The online reservation system will only show availableorientation dates for your major/academic program.(This may include changes or additions from what isprinted on the inside cover of this brochure.) Once aprogram is full, it will not show as available.7. Upon successfully reserving a program online, you willsee an online confirmation. Print out your orientationconfirmation and write your confirmed date in thedesignated space on the inside cover of this brochure.You will not be mailed confirmation information; however, you can visit orientation.osu.edu/reservations toview your confirmation at any time.To enable your Ohio State email, go to my.osu.edu and login using your Ohio State username (lastname.#) and password. Click “Change Email Delivery” and follow the directions. NEXT STEPSReview your Transfer Credit Report.You can run your Transfer Credit Report at registrar.osu.edu/transfer credit. This report indicates how your coursestransferred. Click on “Understanding your Transfer CreditReport” for instructions on reading this report and information that will help you determine whether you are requiredto complete departmental evaluations before you attendorientation.Send updated transcripts.If additional or updated transcripts have not been sent toUndergraduate Admissions, ask each institution youattended to send an electronic transcript to Ohio State.Determine if you need to take themath placement exam.Based on your Transfer Credit Report, you are required totake the exam if— Math courses at a previous college will not transfer toOhio State. You have only received math transfer credit designatedas special, technical or undefined technical. You received math transfer credit designated as generalor deferred/unknown that has not been evaluated byan Ohio State math counselor. If so, please send yourTransfer Credit Report, transcript and course syllabus toMathematics Counseling at mathadvisors@math.osu.edu.This subsequent evaluation may exempt you from theassessment. You have submitted college transcripts but have notbeen able to access your Transfer Credit Report fivedays prior to your orientation program.You do not need to take the exam if— You received transfer credit for a specific Ohio Statemath course higher than or equal to Math 1050. You received general or deferred/unknown math creditthat has been evaluated by an Ohio State mathcounselor exempting you from the exam (referto registrar.osu.edu/transfer credit for details). You are a nontraditional student (23 years of age or older)and you choose not to take the math placement exam.Nontraditional students who do not take the exam willbe placed in Math 1050, an introductory math course.You must take the math placement exam if you wish tobegin at a higher level course.4orientation.osu.edu 614-292-4161 orientation@osu.eduTake the math placement exam (if applicable).If you determine that you need to take the math placementexam, you will take Test B, a 75-minute Web-based test todetermine the need for strengthening your arithmetic,algebra and geometry skills.If you score high enough on Test B, you are eligible to takeTest D at orientation, which may result in a higher placementlevel.Prepare for the exam. Study. Review. Practice. To performyour best, review sample problems and exam topics atgo.osu.edu/mathtestprep.Have high school course and grade information handy.During the exam you will be asked for your high school mathcourses and semester grades.Take the exam at least two days before orientation. If you donot take it prior to orientation, you must take it the morning ofyour orientation program (checking in at 7:30 a.m.).Plan to test in a distraction-free environment in which you willbe uninterrupted for 75 minutes. When you are ready tocomplete the exam:1.Go to orientation.osu.edu/placement2.Log in to the test using your Ohio State username(lastname.#) and password.3.Thoroughly read the instructions, specifically notingthe following:You may use scratch paper, pencil, and a scientific orgraphing calculator. You should not use a calculatorwith computer symbolic algebra or QWERTY keyboard, such as the TI-89 or TI-92.The exam has a maximum time limit of 75 minutes,and the time remaining will be updated after youanswer each question. Time continues to run even ifyou log off your computer or if you have computerproblems.The exam is multiple choice with only one correctanswer per question. Partial credit is not given.4.Upon completing the exam, click “submit” and noteyour placement code (R, S, T or N).Determine if you are required to take English orforeign language tests at orientation.English testing – you are required to take the English placement test if you received fewer than two semester hours ofEnglish composition credit (refer to your Transfer CreditReport). You are not required to take the test if you receivedcredit for English 1110 (the first-year composition courserequired for all undergraduate students).

Foreign language testing – you are required to take aforeign language placement test if you studied a foreignlanguage for at least two years in high school. Foreignlanguage testing is used to determine at which course levelyou will start if you plan to study that language at Ohio State.You are not required to take a language placement test ifyou have college credit for a foreign language, graduatedfrom high school more than five years ago, have neverformally studied a language or had fewer than two years ofthe same language in high school.Complete the Campus Clarity online trainingAll new students will complete online training that addressesstalking, abusive relationships and sexual violence oncampus. You will receive an email sent to your universityemail account from admin@campusclarity.com with a link toaccess the training and instructions for completing it. You’reexpected to complete the online training prior to yourassigned program date since these topics will be reviewedat orientation.Didn’t get the email invitation? No course creditis given, nor will it necessarily fulfill any math requirements.What if I’m having problems with the math placementexam?If you experience problems during the exam, go back to go.osu.edu/mathtest, log in and return to the last question youanswered. Your answers should be saved; if the examreverts to the first question, scroll forward to the last questionyou answered.If this doesn’t work or your time has run out, or if youexperience any other difficulties during the exam, contactthe Office of Testing as soon as possible: Call 614-292-2241 (weekdays 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m.) Email testing@esue.ohio-state.eduWhat does my math placement code mean?After completing the exam, you will receive a math coursecode that indicates your placement level. Bring your codewith you; the advising staff at orientation will use your codeto help you register for the appropriate math and/or sciencecourses.In some cases, the exam will not be able to determine amath placement level. If this happens, you will be given aplacement level U (“undetermined”) instead of a math coursecode. If your placement level is U, you must take an alternateexam the morning of your orientation program (checking inat 7:30 a.m.).What if I have questions about the English or foreignlanguage placement tests?Direct questions about the English placement test to theDepartment of English at 614-292-6065.
