university of hawai‘i bookstoresAnnual Report: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2016REACHING OUT TO OURUNIVERSITY ‘OHANAAs the retail sector adjusts to the changes brought aboutby a growing online marketplace, the University of Hawai‘iBookstore System has sought new ways to engage andsupport our campus communities. During Fiscal Year2016, we have made a concerted effort to reach out to ourclientele by participating in New Faculty and New StudentOrientations, and issuing a customer satisfaction survey. Bybuilding relationships with our customers, we have come to a better understanding of howto serve them.One of our clientele’s primary concerns was the accessibility of educational materials. Weaddressed this concern by making our UH Bookstore Scholarship available to studentsat all UH System campuses, awarding 25,000 in funding. We also expanded our digitaltextbook inventory, resulting in significant cost savings for students.Convenience was another important element to our customers. We provided a centralizedshopping experience by expanding the services offered by Campus Solutions and addinghigh-demand lifestyle brands such as Herschel, RVCA, and TOMS to our inventory. Formore information on our outreach efforts, please view the “Highlights of the Past Year”section of this report.We are proud to serve such a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff. As we look towardthe next fiscal year, we will strive to provide even more products and services that will makeUH Bookstores the retailer of choice for our university ‘ohana. university of Hawai‘i bookstoresAnnual Report: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2016HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST YEARMERCHANDISE EXPANSIONS UH Bookstores expanded their selectionof RedShelf digital books, providingstudents with a convenient way to accesscourse materials. These digital titlesoffer substantial savings to students,are compatible with all readers andsmartphones, and include enrichmenttools such as study guides, definitions,and flashcards. UH Mānoa Bookstore worked with theUH Mānoa Dental Hygiene programoffice to consolidate the ordering ofcourse materials. Students are now ableto purchase kits that include all thematerials they need for the semester.These kits yielded an additional 160,000in sales for this category.to obtain visual aids for presentations orsignage for special events. Herschel, Natural Life, RVCA, andTOMS are just a few of the on-trendbrands that have been added to ourstores’ selection of gifts and fast fashion.Mānoa Bookstore’s Campus Roadboutique maintains a constant flow ofnew and exciting products that appealto our student clientele. During FY17,product line expansion will continue atall stores.OUTREACH EFFORTS Posters and vinyl banners can now beprinted at Campus Solutions. Finishingservices such as poster board mountingand grommet installation are alsoavailable. Now students, faculty, andstaff don’t have to venture off campus UH Bookstores awarded 25,000 inscholarship funds to support studentsenrolled throughout the UH Systemduring the 2015-2016 academic year.More than 2,000 applications werereceived and 13 winners were selected.Winning students were awarded 1,000for part-time tuition or 2,000 for fulltime tuition.For the fifth consecutive year, the University of Hawai‘iBookstore System released officially licensed HI Pride T-shirtsdesigned by UH students. UH Bookstores partnered with theHawai‘i Graduation Initiative on its 15to Finish program for a third straightyear. Students who were enrolled in 15www.bookstore.hawaii.educredits or more per semester during theirfreshmen year were eligible to win freetextbooks during their sophomore year.In FY16, 6,500 worth of textbooks weregiven to the winning students. During FY16, UH Bookstores provided 19,000 in merchandise donations tononprofit organizations. These donationsconsisted of such items as gift cards andUH-branded merchandise. Priority wasgiven to those organizations that benefitstudents and the campus community.2

university of hawai‘i bookstoresAnnual Report: Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2016SPECIAL EVENTS The second annual Bed Bath &Beyond pop-up shop was hosted byMānoa Bookstore in Fall 2015, whichprovided students with on-campusaccess to dorm room furnishings.An online shopping option wasprovided for additional convenience.This successful pop-up event yielded 10,000 in sales. To herald the start of the 2015-2016academic year, Mānoa Bookstorehosted a new faculty orientationreception. Incoming faculty memberswere introduced to Bookstoresmanagers and the services provided bytheir departments. Mānoa Bookstore held Grad Fairs twomonths prior to the end of the Fall 2015and Spring 2016 semesters. These fairsserved as one-stop shops for students,where they could gather importantcommencement information andplace orders for announcements, caps,and gowns. As Fall 2015 drew to a close, MānoaBookstore held two holiday events:the Faculty and Staff Holiday PreviewSale and the Employee Apple OneDay Sale. Both of these fun, festivesales were well-attended and offeredvaluable deals to UH’s hardworkingemployees.GOALS FOR FY17 We will focus on increasing costeffective options for students andimproving educational outcomesthrough the implementation of a newInteractive Digital Access Program(IDAP). This program will supplyinteractive digital course materials atthe lowest possible prices based onfaculty agreement to teach from thesematerials. The IDAP program willbe integrated into Laulima, wherestudents can access all course materialsstaring one week prior to the start ofthe semester. In the coming year, we will continueto expand our range of products.Consumer interest in lifestyle brandssuch as Burt’s Bees, Gund, and Papyrusshows that our clientele wants morefrom us than just textbooks andschool supplies. With the decline ofprint book revenues, sales in othercategories are essential to the successand sustainability of our stores.3www.bookstore.hawaii.edu We hope to expand and strengthenour partnerships with key vendors andaffiliates. During FY16, we focusedour outreach efforts on increasingknowledge of our services andestablishing new contacts. The focusfor the upcoming fiscal year will be onidentifying and developing partnershipsto increase revenues and improve ourcurrent offerings.
