December 2011, Volume 83, No. 12Editor-in-Chief: Kim Woodward akwoodward@aol.comThe President’s CornerDarlene Jacobson 440-247-1475 djacobson577@hotmail.comA HEARTFELT THANK YOUAs my term as president of the Cleveland Hiking Club comes to an end, I want to acknowledge a few of the manymembers of the Club who are always ready to pitch in for the good of the Club. First off, I’d like to thank the Club officersand directors. Not only do they give up an evening each month to attend board meetings that are often long andsometimes very heated, but many also serve on or act as liaison with committees, volunteer at events, and, especially forofficers, spend many additional hours each month completing their duties. Next I’d like to thank those who serve as thechair of a committee: auditing, planning our social events, keeping track of visitors and membership roster, editingNewsteps, maintaining our camp, safety, excursions, trails, PC support, our web site, historian, sunshine, etc. I’d also liketo thank the many members who have provided guidance and support to me personally during my term. I can’t imaginehow I would have made it without your help: Ruth, Gayle, Matt, Alice, CJ, Nancy, Aggi, Judy, Kathy, Ron, and Norma toname a few. Those who serve on CHC committees are also to be thanked for all their efforts keeping the Club running intip-top condition. Finally, I’d like to thank our members who volunteer hundreds of hours each year, most importantly toour mission, those who schedule and lead hikes that we all enjoy. The Cleveland Hiking Club runs entirely on the strengthof its many, many volunteers and I thank each and every one of you for all you do for CHC.We will have a new crew of officers and directors starting their assignments on January 1. Please do all you can tosupport these folks. The Club runs best when we all work together, helping one another, celebrating our successes, andmourning our losses in the company of our CHC friends.See you all on the trails! Why Does CHC CollectAluminum Cans?Alice Kruse 440-247-6049 alicekruse@sbcglobal.netYes, it helps clean up the environment but it also helps fund CVNPovernight camping for urban children, Buckeye Trail improvement, and TheNature Center at Shaker Lakes (NCSL). You May Have It and Not Know It!Dues Are Due — Dues Are DueCleo Current cfcurrent@aol.comA hiker recently shared a story thatprompted this article. She had gone to thepodiatrist for a corn, and she noticed someflaking skin on the tip of her big toe. He toldher she had frostbite. She never felt cold,so how could that happen? The doctor saidthis is not an unusual occurrence duringextreme temperatures. Frostbite can bedangerous! And as our weatherman have said, if we likedlast winter we will love this winter. So, have you noticed allthe products on the shelves for hand warmers and footwarmers? Consider using them on extremely cold hikingdays.Mayo Clinic suggests the following steps: When exposedto very cold temperatures, skin and underlying tissues mayfreeze, resulting in frostbite. The areas most likely to beaffected by frostbite are your hands, feet, nose, and ears. Ifyour skin looks white or grayish-yellow, is very cold, andhas a hard or waxy feel, you may have frostbite. Your skinmay also itch, burn, or feel numb. Severe or deep frostbitecan cause blistering and hardening. As the area thaws, theflesh becomes red and painful.Gradually warming the affected skin is key to treatingfrostbite. To do so: Protect your skin from further exposure. If you’reoutside, warm frostbitten hands by tucking them intoyour armpits. Protect your face, nose, or ears bycovering the area with dry, gloved hands. Don’t rubthe affected area and never rub snow on frostbittenskin. The envelope for your dues is included in this issue ofNewsteps. Please make your check or money order payableto Cleveland Hiking Club. Mail in the enclosed envelope toJean Ruck, 1671 Westhill Blvd., Westlake OH 44145. Call Alice Nelson at440-449-2588 for an application form. Please inform Alice Nelson of any changes of address, telephone numbers, or e-mail addresses for next year’sdirectory: aln33333@roadrunner.com.ALL MEMBERS MUST PAY DUES BY JANUARY 31 TOMAINTAIN 2012 MEMBERSHIP AND TO BE INCLUDEDIN THE 2012 DIRECTORY.Dues received after January 31 and before December31, 2012, require an additional 5 late fee. Beyond thattime, to be reinstated a former member needs to pay theinitiation fee in addition to dues.Appalachian Trail –New York/New Jersey Get out of the cold. Once you’re indoors, remove wetclothes. Gradually warm frostbitten areas. Put frostbittenhands or feet in warm water — 104 to 107.6 F (40 to42 C). Wrap or cover other areas in a warm blanket.Don’t use direct heat, such as a stove, heat lamp, fireplace, or heating pad, because these can causeburns before you feel them on your numb skin. Don’t walk on frostbitten feet or toes if possible. Thisfurther damages the tissue. If there’s any chance the affected areas will freezeagain, don’t thaw them. If they’re already thawed, wrap them up so that they don’t become frozenagain. Get emergency medical help. If numbness orsustained pain remains during warming or if blistersdevelop, seek medical attention.Enjoy the Holiday Season and keep hiking safely!May 12 to 21, 2012Marilyn Brundage 216-521-3198 mbrundage4@cox.netThe May 2012 AT hike led by Matt Collings and MarilynBrundage has been extended by 1 day. Starting at the top, we filtered downadmiring the very young in the nursery, the fairly young inthe play room. In the kitchen, we saw endless belts sendtrays on their way (less than half an hour serves the wholehospital); saw the belts route dirty dishes to their Cormier*.We toured the laundry, x-ray room, and other specializedequipment. The pneumatic tube which routes messages toall parts of the building went into its routine for us.After the hike in surrounding territory we stopped at theHowards’ for apple pie and fancy doughnuts selected byDon.Newsteps December 1961*Paul Cormier was a member at that time. The 2nd Annual CHC Chili Cook-OffWas Awesome!Barb Siegel 216-351-2642 smallfry6301@cox.netThe Second Annual CHC Chili Cook-Offwas an awesome success! A rootin’ tootin’good time was had by all who traveledback in time to the days of the Ol’ West atthe Camp Onwego Corral for The UltimateShowdown!Chili cooks have one thing in common — they all thinktheir recipe is the best. Beans or No Beans, hot or not, chicken or beef, we can all sit around and debate thefundamentals. But there is only one way to settle the score— a good old-fashioned chili cook-off! By the end of theday, everyone went home full and happy, and 3 people leftwith bragging rights.Taking First Place/The GPS (Great Plate o’ Stuff) Awardwas Don Hoffman for his Chili Be Gone. The “Boot” Jolokia/Second Place was awarded to Debbie Wood for her WhiteChicken Chili. The Third Place/Leave No Trace (that is,leave no trace on your plate) Award was presented to JackKohut for his Special #6.The unique charm, history, and beauty of this area awaitus on this fascinating 5 day country vacation to Vermont,The Green Mountains, and a bit of Massachusetts. This tripwas quite popular and successful in 2011, and we areoffering it again but with changes to make it even better. The hiking will be different and the Vermont “on the bus”time will be kept to a minimum. Hence, the tour price hascome down a bit.Join us on a fun-filled fall foliage adventure to NewEngland on this one hotel holiday! Corina, our Innkeeper, did a great job for us on the previous
